Just curious as to what speed most people actually do drive based on an interstate with a 55mph speed limit. Please vote honestly.

1. 55mph or less
2. 56-60mph
3. 61-65mph
4. 66-70mph
5. 70mph or greater

Depends on the road, but usually 61-65 mph.

The New York State Thruway has a speed limit of 65 mph, and MANY people will be going 80-85 mph, with the real speeders going at least 90 mph, especially once you get past the catskills region.

I usually drive 10 over what's posted, since that's what you're "allowed". At times I've been 15 over the limit, but I've had many officers pass me going faster than that! :moped: :car:

I didn't vote because on the highway I go anywhere between 5 and 15 MPH OVER the posted speed limit depending on traffic and conditions.

The only highway that I use on a regular basis is 65mph all the way from home to work. I'm usually going 80 and the cops are passing me left and right! It's a trucker's route (I-70 in MD) and go any slower than 75 and you get lots of honking horns.

i stay at about 5 over because that's what used to be "allowed"

ETA: When I was at Boys' State, the state troopers there told us that they give 12 mph. At 13, they started pulling folks (this is in NC). They never explained why though...

I usually do 5- 10 over depending on the traffic. I try to not accelerate hard or brake too often as it uses more gas. So, whatever speed will allow me to use my cruise control safely is what I usually do.

I usually wind up going about 8 over... though I have a lead foot and see myself creeping up way too high at points.

Fortunately here, none of the highways I travel on are 55mph or I probably would feel like I am going to slow ;)

for posted 55 I drive 64mph...as long as traffic and conditions allow. The only exception is LIE 495...where if you are doing less than 70 you are bound to get hit(BTW it is 55 mph...but I haven't seen anyone doing that in 20years :rotfl2: )

I can't drive 55!

Ours are 65. I will usually do 70-75 and I CONSTANTLY have someone up my tailpipe.

BTW, I was once basically accused of being a criminal anarchist for admitting on the DIS that I do 5-10 miles over the limit. Just be prepared for someone with a sanctimonious "Do you get to pick & choose which laws you obey" chip on their shoulder to come flying along on their broomstick soon enough (at 55, of course).

The old expression (I'm in my 30's, so take that with a grain of salt I guess) used to be "five - you're fine, nine - you're mine," meaning cops generally didn't pull you over for going five above, but would as you got closer to 10. I still usually drive about 8 - 10 above, but I am just keeping up with traffic, not passing everyone in sight.

They have interstates with speed limits of 55?!?!

HAHA JK. Around the big cities that's what the speed limits are. Anyways, it really depends, most of the time I go no more than 9 over the speed limit. But if traffic is cruising, I go along with them. For example, when I'm on I76 around Pittsburgh, I go about 70 or 80 because that's what everyone else drives.

But my boyfriend used to live down that way (or up that way depending on where you live). And he lived off a highway that's speed limit was 45 and so many people drove like 80 or 90 on it. :sad2:

The speed limit here is 70 mph, however, if you go between 70 -79 mph you have everyone on your tail including truckers, most people go around 80 - 85 with 90+ in the fast lane.

In a 55 I do 65. But around here, if you don't do 65, you get run over. :moped:

In a 65 I do 70. I don't like going faster than 70, just don't feel comfortable.

I never go more than 65 in a 55 zone. I stay in the right hand lane with my cruise control on and even though people still get up on my bumper it doesn't bother me, they have four lanes to the left to use. It saves me alot of gas money (especially if I stay at 60 or under) and I don't have to be stressed out or aggressive in any of the other lanes. Just because the majority of people (even cops) are going 75-80 mph doesn't mean I have to.

The speed limit here is 70 so I usually do about that. On this particular road, 70 seems too fast. It is just really congested but if you don't you'll have people running you off the road.

All our other main roads are 65.

If I"m doing a road trip and are in a rural area with little traffic I'll go 80 but rarely over that. The speed limit in those areas are usually 70 or higher.

I tend to get in the left hand lane and travel 10-15 MPH over the speed limit. I rarely move out of the left hand lane and I try not to tailgate.
