I voted that I won't be getting the DDP plan now.

This will be our first trip to WDW....when we first started making our plans we poured over the guidebooks and the DIS...looking at photographs and reviews and comments and people's signatures, lol. We finally all agreed on POR....I called and made our room only reservations for Jan 14 to Feb 15...yep, a whole month (with a couple days away to visit other things, but we were just going to keep the room).

Then we started the research, would the DDP plan (before it was announced that major changes were coming) be financially beneficial to US. We again poured over guidebooks, websites, menus.....we pretended that we were at the restauraunts and the girls chose what they'd want to eat. THen we did the math several different ways (how we normally eat out, how we'd like to eat there, how we'd eat if we wanted to "milk" the plan). Obviously the milking the plan was the biggest savings, but I knew we'd not be able to do that, it would make me feel guilty to waste so much food....but I also knew that we'd likely want to try new things, sometimes get something we normally wouldn't even consider, etc. But...even the "how we normally eat" we came out basically breaking even. But it was still a great deal for us, because we'd have never tried some of those expensive restaurants because of the cost...but now that it was "already paid" it seemed good to branch out and live it up on vacation. So...if we decided spur of the moment to waste a few TS, well yeah, it'd cost us a little money, maybe, but I justified it with the "it's vacation" mentality.

Then I read a few posts about split reservations.....and decided that since there would be several days we'd be offsite doing other things that even though we had a few 2TS, we'd be wasting a few. So, now I learned we could split reservations....hey maybe that meant we could stay 2 weeks at POR, then 1 week without DDP at POFQ, then back to POR for our last days. THis would eliminate the expense of DDP when we wouldn't be using it, still mean that with a few 2TS we could eat at non-DDP's or off site occasionally. Ok, this made the break even point much better...we probably wouldn't waste many credits, we'd still have the chance to eat for a week or so off site....."it's a good thing" as Martha might say.

Then the rumors started....and while the appetizer loss wasn't a big deal because we wouldn't have used them all....there were a few I had really wanted to try so it was a bummer, but livable (though DIsney if you're reading, in the future consider an either/or scene with the desert/appetizer). Then it was pretty clear that the "No Gratuity included" was a done deal.....whoa, wait a minute, that just increased the cost by way more than just 18%.....because it wasn't 18% of my $40 a day per person cost it was now 18% of that sushi and filet mignon dinner at Cali.....yikes, that tip would be about as much as a day of the plan!

Time to start re-crunching some numbers. Ok, what if we did the split stay 2 weeks on DDP 2 weeks at another hotel off DDP. That brought the cost down, but still meant now we'd have to find more places off site to eat then originally planned. Going to all these different restaurants inside WDW was cutting into a lot of our park time (though we were certainly there long enough to see it all anyway)....but now we'd have to go off site as well, adding even more time away....and I just knew that once we left the park we'd probably not return that night without something like fireworks or a show to draw us back. This was starting to not be "a good thing".

Then I stumbled on a post about off site accomodations....whoa again.....I knew it would be cheaper, but not THAT much cheaper and not that we could rent a HOUSE for less.....wow, no cramped hotel room (even the deluxes are small compared to a house for heavens sake, and the mod we had booked was smaller than our living room at home!). But, hmmmm, staying off site we can't get the DDP at all...but heavens, we'd be saving over $2,000 JUST on accomodations. That could buy a LOT of food.

Then when I started talking to the kids about all the advantages of staying off site and not doing the DDP....well, one of my brilliant little ones said "Mom with all that money we're saving, could we put it back into the Disney account and go later in the year when the Christmas stuff is up". Such a smart kid.....hit me where my cheapness lives.....how to get even more use out of our AP...and another fun vacation, without spending any more money! We'd stay shorter the second time, combine it with the holidays with relatives, already had our APs, and we could do it all for almost what we would save.

Alright, I'll admit....I didn't cancel my Room Only yet.....I saved it until I was really sure that the rumors would be right. And now I know they are....so this week we'll find the "right" house, book it, then cancel the Room Only and most of the ADRs.

But...moving off site, dropping the DDP will save me over $5,000.....we can eat a LOT of food and still not spend 1/3 of that if we try. We'll have a full size kitchen, so we'll be able to do our smoothies (we would have in the hotel too, but now we don't have to worry about the neighbors reaction to 90 seconds of loud smoothie-ing)....and now we can have a good healthy hot breakfast as well (couldn't do that in the hotel room, would have had to use a CS). We'll still do lunch in the park, but later in the day now that we'll arrive with a full tummy.....so we can do a late dinner whereever we decide, or even back home. I don't mind cooking too much.....and we're planners by nature so when I know our plan is to come home, I'll crockpot something yummy (put it on a timer so if we fail our plan it won't overcook and we can just eat it the next night warmed up). We'll do a bunch of the character meals, but they're pretty cheap....we're keeping our BBB event and the surprise GF tea and late dinner in the castle while the girls are all dolled up.....but I'll be cancelling things like Le Cellier, because for $40 instead of just a small steak, there's that Texas de Brazil where we can try many different yummy beefs.....and we'll try some local cusine (once we find some)....and the kids wanted to do the Pirates/Medevial/Arbian dinner shows....now we'll likely do all 3 instead of just one because we don't have enough nights we can waste TS.

It's free-ing really. Yeah, I'll probably wonder if I missed out by not being "in" Disney all the time, but will comfort myself with the reminder that we never remembered to be unhappy about it at Disneyland all this time.....I may miss not being so close to our room a few times when I'm ready to crash and still have a 10 minute drive home....but I'll collapse onto my own bed in my own bedroom, knowing that I won't have to listen to my girls giggle themselves to sleep, or their snores, or them complain about my snoring, lol. When I wake up hours before them I won't have to tiptoe around and can actually do something more than just read with my little night light....I could get up and make me a cup of tea to watch the sunrise in my PJs....I could get online and chat with ya'll.....ok, you get the idea.

So...now we're staying offsite, eating on our own, and able to start planning a return trip in Nov/Dec. So....thanks Disney for changing the pricing to higher on certain days, adding several hundred dollars to our original room only price......and thanks for changing the DDP and making it not so attractive to us. It means we'll come visit you again, but this second trip you'll hardly get any of our money....we'll be living off site, we'll have already done most of the character meals and probably only do a Princess one this second time......we'll have favorites off site for dinner, and with the AP we won't even be buying any tickets. Sure we'll drop a little on lunches, but we tended to share meals in Disneyland, and I'll bet we'll do that again here...too excited to go ride and see to worry about eating beyond simple sustenance. We bring our own snacks, it's winter so we won't need to carry drinks and can get free ice water if we're thirsty.

So, thanks DIsney....you saved us money, but I'm sorry you'll be losing our money. I'm sure you'll make it up by raising your prices and taking away more benefits. But...there's other vacations to go to....we'll probably not afford to return for several years....if at all, as the girls are almost teens already.

If you actually read all this, thanks.....it was cathartic to "say" it all aloud. And helps me build my resolve that we're doing the right thing for US. The only thing anyone has said that's made me think we're missing out on something is the 'themeing".....but my goodness...I just went and tucked my girls into their beds....and guess what....we LIVE in themeing every day. :rotfl2:

One of the reasons I chose Disney World for a honeymoon site was that I thought we'd be able to return again and again and relive the special memories. The DDP was one of the major selling points for my fiance, who really likes good restaurant food. Eating at fine restaurants is one of the few "adult" things to do at the World, and we think it will be a highlight of our honeymoon.

I'm very disappointed by the changes in the plan. I've done the math and the new standard plan would be a ripoff for us, and the new deluxe plan is ridiculously expensive (I can't even imagine eating $70 worth of food in one day  ). Without the neat dining plan, we'd just be returning for the parks and the rides, and we don't even like rides! I think this may be our only Disney trip until and unless we have kids. :sad2: Of course, the way things are going, by the time that happens, tickets will probably be over $100 a day...

I have to say I am just shocked at how much money some people spend on food! I will admit that we are not a family of foodies, we are not big eaters and are all fairly picky. But wow... some of the prices I've seen posted here just for food alone are more than we are spending on our upcoming 10-day WDW free dining trip, including our package, tickets, airfare and souvenir money! Please don't misunderstand, if that is what your family likes and it's in your budget, have at it! But for us, it just leaves me shaking my head.

Wow, you must be good at finding a deal! Our food budget is pretty big, because we are foodies and because we eat out on vacation because we never do at home, but even without that there's no getting around the fact that tickets cost almost $1200 for the 4 (probably more since the increase! ) of us and airfare is around $800. And if I'm going to spent $1200 on tickets and $800 on getting there and $1600 on a place to sleep, I don't see the sense in pinching pennies on where we eat. But there's a reason we're not every year or multiple times a year Disney visitors! When we go, we pull out all the stops, but then we won't go back for 2 or 3 or 5 years and we'll set our sights on other, usually less expensive, destinations.

You are going to sell your DVC over this??:confused3 They are "gouging' you??? Hmm... considering that pretty much just applying common sense tells most folks that the 2007 DDP was a "loss leader" means that they have been giving you food for the past few years. I bet you never thanked them for the free food did you?!

Trust me. The food that my family received from Disney over the past 15 years was the furthest thing from free. We never received the "free dining plan", nor did we ever split a meal among us (not that I have anything against this strategy as it beats wasting it like most people do!). I have probably paid in excess of $17,000 in food at Disney World over this period alone. That said, I don't for one minute believe that the DDP was losing WDW money. Corrections were needed, but not these changes.

(You did realize that DDP was NEVER guaranteed with DVC? It was added a few years ago and coudl be discountinued at any time. )

Ummm. As you can see from my profile, I've been a DVC member since 1996. So yes, I was quite aware of this possibility.

(This may be the best post I have read yet. If you can't eat for next to nothing you can't go to Disney at all.?????)

I have no idea what you are referring to...

I travel to a LOT of other places, IMHO if you "cancel" every time something changes you don't like. You aren't going to like other things either. (Periodically on other travel boards I read an OUTCRY like this when the cruise line changes something and they keep adding "little" charges there too!!) And I am sorry, but UNLESS you are channeling WALT, NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HE WOULD DO!!!!!! (He is DEAD!!! He is not telling you!)

I feel bad for you, because Walt is speaking to us through everything that he built. In addition, those who were closest to him have written extensively about his views and priorities towards family entertainment. Personally, I think those who work for WDW should read this material and reflect on it more seriously.

However, Walt seemed to have more ability to weather a little adversity or we wouldn't have WDW!

I've been around WDW long enough to see plenty of changes, some of which were good and some of which were bad.

My family has changed a great deal over the past 15 years as well. Now, it is a very important to our WDW vacations to have extensive dining choices and freedom. I believe this type of dining enjoyment has been taken away from a very large number of people. Perhaps you don't understand. Perhaps you can't understand. But you could at least sympathize with those who've had something taken away that meant a great deal to them, whether it's a favorite ride, character, OR dining experience.

Finally, I should add that I own a decent amount of Disney stock. If you've read the financial reports, you'd find that the theme park operations are not exactly struggling. Increases of this magnitude were not necessary. I approve of previous attempts to stop outright fraud in the DDP (e.g. separating adult and children's table service credits), but make no mistake about it, these changes were motivated by greed. If you think Walt would approve of that, do your self a favor and pick up some more biographies.

In my opinion, those operating WDW are rapidly losing sight of Walt's vision. These shortcoming are probably most evident with what has happened at EPCOT (it is a disaster compared to its original vision). Others have written extensively about that, so I'll just leave it at that... http://epcot82.blogspot.com/

I not only cancelled our ADRs, I cancelled the whole trip for January (14 days at WDW followed by a 7 night Western cruise). Nice work, WDW.

I'll probably sell two of our Animal Kingdom contracts as well. Forget about the add-on at the Contemporary.

We were planning a summer 2008 trip but now may go to Yellowstone. We've made over 20 trips to WDW in the past 8 years but this change hit a nerve.

You probably won't see me much of me around here for awhile. I am thoroughly disgusted by the greed of WDW. Disney is recording record profits, and still has the nerve to gouge its customers with the DDP. I for one have had enough. I can complain all I want on this board and by emailing WDW. It appears that the only thing the Mouse understands in 2007 (unlike when Walt was alive) is $$$. So they can kiss my $$$ goodbye.

Best wishes to you all. I hope that you and your families have a lifetime of wonderful vacations (regardless of where you go)...

Thank you! I will crunch the numbers on the Disney site tomorrow again. If they come up to the undesirable number. I once thought. Guess, we will go on a cruise in 2008, Or just Universal. I wish you, and your family the best vacations off Disney in 2008. I'm sure things will more than likely become more desirable again at Disney in 2009. With Harry Potter Land coming to Universal.
:goodvibes :thumbsup2

I voted no.

Disney is still brilliant and so if they keep up the resorts and don't mess to much with the bus service we will continue to stay on site. We will go as often as before, but Disney can count on us eating off site a lot more often. Spending a few days at Universal and Sea World without having to rush back to Disney because of a dining reservation! It's freeing really, not being tied to Disney. We will eat where we want when we want with a few TS thrown in, but the savings with the new dining plan will amount to about 5 dollars here and there and for us the hassle is just not worth it.

I mean, this is a vacation for me. As I've said in another post, I penny pinch all year. I can splurge on my vacation.

See, without the DDP, I would probably eat offsite, because the prices inside the parks are pretty comparable. Or if I did eat inside the parks, it would be CS all the way. I know how to save money.

But I get tired of CS food. And I definitely DO NOT wish to go through the hassle of going offsite to eat. For me, convenience trumps everything else on my vacation. Even saving money.

So, Deluxe is Great! Plus, on my last day, we'll have plenty of credits to eat even though our stay at the hotel would be expired.

I voted no. We used the dining plan this past December and really enjoyed trying different restaurants. However, losing the appetizers and the tip no longer make it as appealing to eat at so many sit down meals.

Also, we are thinking of a trip in late 08. Our middle child will then be 10, and she is not a big eater. I cannot see spending money on an adult plan for her.

With all of the components of a Disney trip going up, I don't see us staying at a Disney resort on our next trip. We are military, so I am trying to convince dh to try SOG. He loves the monorail hotels, but I think Walt is pushing us out of his market.

Even if free dining is offered next year, it won't really be free unless the guest is stiffing the server at every TS meal. And depending on where you're eating, the tips can be very substantial.

Please only answer this poll question either if a) you have previously used the DDP, or b) you would have used the DDP as the program existed in 2007. If you have never used DDP or would not have used it under the 2007 plan terms, please do not take the poll. Feel free to comment below, though!

The reason for this is I'm interested in determining what percent of people will quit using the DDP in 2008 that otherwise would have used it. Of course, this is all unscientific, but nevertheless interesting! :)

Thanks for participating!

I wrote will not get.

We usually go in a big group. And it's already hard to plan for everyone to be at certain places at the same time and agree. and to think of keeping track of dining credits for that big group. But it came down to the fact that it was still a good deal... MARGINALLY. then they tell us "No appetizer" or gratuity on the standard plan. Forget it. Not worth it anymore.

We used DDP last December and LOVED it.

We will use it again in March. I sat down with menus and ran numbers last night to determine which DDP: regular or deluxe.

We will go with the regular. Going with the regular and paying OOP for 2 TS meals plus appies at the other TS is still cheaper than paying for the Deluxe so it makes more sense for us.

Allyson :)

We have gone on the DDP several times and thoroughly enjoyed it but with the new changes, primarily the removal of gratuity, will not pay for DDP again. To lower the cost of the plan a dollar while in effect raising the price at least 18% (probably much more b/c you are paying at least 18% of your TS bill not 18% of the price of the plan) totally cuts the value out of the plan to me. It's an insult to the intelligence that WDW thinks they can sell the basic plan as a continued value to repeat customers when you compare it to the current plan. I would have had more respect for management and been more likely to continue to pay for DDP if they had just left the plan alone and raised the price.

Criticize, berate, condemn me all you want, but quite frankly, I think it is ridiculous that so many of you get such apparent satisfaction out of threatening/planning to forgo WDW and go to Universal instead...because of an appetizer and tip?! Because you think that WDW has gotten greedy? What did you do before the Dining Plan? It seems that many people have forgotten how much the Dining Plan has SAVED them on their previous trips: check out a few dozen threads where people revel in sharing receipts and price tallies over the past few years...clearly WDW lost money on such as those.

Have a good time at Universal...more room for me at the World. :thumbsup2

We are part of a Grand Gathering group of 13 who have been saving for 2 years for our January "Trip of a Lifetime". Although we assumed there would be small ticket increases we were not at all expecting such HUGE dining changes. We are very disappointed to say the least. :sad1:

I'm glad the Deluxe plan works for some, but for our middle class family even the extra $300+ tip money (family of four) on the regular dining plan IS A BIG DEAL.

Our group has decided we will not be doing the dining plan. It looks like we'll end up eating mostly CS and thus missing some wonderful experiences.

All year Disney has promoted just how AFFORDABLE a Disney vacation can be. I feel a bit like we just got the old bait and switch. I guess I'm just glad I know it now... and not on Jan.1.:sad2:

I think Disney is having their intended results as shown by this poll. Personally, I think they saw the overcrowding issue and wanted to get people off of the DDP, which IMO is a good thing because the ADR problem has become almost ridiculous.

You need to do the math. I used the menu's on Allearsnet and added it up. Ignoring the tip in both cases and even with the appetizer no longer included, it is still a better deal for us to use the dining plan. I figured we would save about $300 doing it that way.....which really surprised me. I didn't think we would do the dining plan again until I added everything up.

I'll be using the DDP once again. I crunched th numbers yesterday, using the menus on Allears. I estimated how much we'd spend for each meal, totaled everything up, and compared it to the cost of the DDP. Even having to add the tip, we will come out ahead.

We won't be using the Deluxe plan however. I realize that it's a good deal, but the price is just too steep. And we don't need three TS meals in a day. I realize that they can be used for Signature Dining, but I just can't justify the money. Besides, we don't mind CS at all. We've found several CS places that we actually look forward to eating at.

Now, if they had a plan in between the Basic and the Deluxe, I'd be all for it. You know, something like offering two TS instead of three. In fact, they had a plan like this, but it was called Discovery Magic. That was when we first used a dining plan. Each person had two credits a day for any number of things and TS meals were included in the list. This was perfect. So if they priced a plan around $60 or so for two TS meals a day, I'd be all over that.
