Can we guess what prompted this poll.

We all signed a contract that gave us specific rights. Do these rights supercede our accountability to each other. Is everything we do with our membership OKAY just as long as it falls within the rules of the contract? Or is common courtesy and accountability a major consideration in the way we should use our membership?

It would be nice if it were that way,but it isn't.

Yes they do.

While I have to say that we can do what we please with our points, I also have to face myself in the mirror each day.

;)

Oops, from the poll looks like I was wrong about being considerate of other members-

As long as I get want I want and make as much profit as possible in my commercial DVC rental business on e-bay, why should I care whether or not it harms anyone else or other DVC members? Guess I'll just start leaving my bags of trash in the hallways next to other's doors (why should I close the bags?), dumping my garbage in the landscaping, removing fixtures that aren't immediately noticible, stealing towels, having huge loud screeming aurguments in public places with my spouse throwing a few things, stealing pool chairs removing people's belongings when they aren't looking, trashing the facilities, playing loud music late at night, leaving my glass beer bottles laying around walkways and near/in the pool, throwing my cigarette butts on walkways and in flowerpots, cutting in lines, demanding everything first before others when aurguing with CMs, send all the food back soley to try to get free meals, hang my confederate flag from the balcony next to my stained undies, being rude to people I pass, speak lots of profanity near other people's children, pee in the pool and hot tub (more often), and stinking up non-smoking rooms with lots of smoke smells ....Now it can be more like home ....

Are neighbors accountable to each other for their neighborhood? Of course they are.

How would you like to live next door to someone who has no respect for their property, your's or other neighbors? How about absentee landlords? We have all seen what some absentee landlords who don't care about their neighborhood have done to our cities.

I believe that other post is making the same statement about some DVC owners.

It's not that way in my neighborhood.. I live in a very "nice" neighborhood where you would expect more. Instead we have a bunch of very opionated, nosey, snob neighbors who dictate what others should and should not do. Yet, what ever they are doing is ok even if they have just complained about someone else for the same thing. They see someone else but they never see themselves. So if these people own DVC what makes them act differently with regards to "that" home compared to their "DVC" home? Nothing! They still act the same no matter what the situation.

BTW-my comments are not to attack your post but more to say that I feel thoughtless people are everywhere and my neighborhood is full of them.

I have not read the other post that brought on this poll, but I voted earlier when no one had responded yet. I voted that I can do what I want w/my points as that is how I understood your poll. I think if I want to rent out points, which I haven't ever done and probably won't ever do, that as long as I am following the rules as set by DVC then it is fine. The use of my points is none of anyones business as long as I am following the rules.

When you start throwing in common courtesy and accoutability in areas such as garbage in the hallways, trashing up the rooms, having an "as long as we are having a good time everything is all good attitude", etc., that is a whole other ballgame! I did not understand that all of that was included from you original poll question. Of course, we should be accountable for our actions in those areas and more! I see now that when you said "use our membership" that it was a much more than just using points. :)

I just wanted to clarify my vote, so you don't get the wrong idea on my account :) I guess my vote goes both ways.

When it comes to the use of points specifically then, I stand by my vote.

When it comes to common courtesy and accountability towards our "home" and neighbors then my vote goes the other way!

common courtesy and accountability.thats all that needs to be said ..unless your talking about SOME people.. ohh well..cant fight all the people.. all the time...dave

Well, I think that this poll might not state it exactly how previous posts intended the question to be stated. But I did vote that we should be able to use our points however the contract states that we may use them. I don't think that the poll says anything about how we are to behave while using the points. There I believe that we should be accountable to each other on how we treat the accomodations, facilities, and our neighbors. I have never rented points before and at this time never intend to do so. It's kind of funny, it seems that a number of people are not happy with the way that members are renting their points, but in the same breath will state that the trades through DVC are too many points and it is better to rent the points and pay cash. I am paying for an upcoming cruise with points and I have actually had someone post on a thread that until we stop using our points for such trades that points for trades will never come down. I don't feel that it is my responsibility to not take this trip just to try to lower points for the rest of the members. If I am willing to pay the price in points I should be able to do so. If someone else feels they are too high then they don't have to use points for trades.

While it is true that there will always be people who are routinely inconsiderate, my sense is that they're in the minority.

I think that even the people on here who feel that we can use our points however we choose are probably very responsible with them. They just point out that it is within their rights to reserve multiple rooms, cancel, book only weekdays etc. They're right. I doubt there are many people who do this habitually. I think the idea that they MIGHT be doing this is what is upsetting some people. I think as certain situations arise we may all do some of the above if we need to.

With the above poll around 50/50 it probably represents that we, as members feel we should use our points for our own best interest primarily and also be considerate to other DVC members by operating fairly and in the family spirit of the DVC.

Both sides are right. That's why this issue is not resolving itself.

.

This is the opinion of most, but when it comes to your points(your=everyone, not the quoted poster), when it comes to your points, is making an Xmas reservation to rent on Ebay OK?

Is making reservations to rent on Ebay right at any time?

Is making two or three reservations for a potential renter that is only going to use one, OK?

Is making two or three reservations for yourself, friends and/or family and canceling the un=needed ones, OK?

Is locking up twenty studios for Wednesday, and again the following wednesday, and again the following wednesday, fully intending to cancel all these reservations, having the sole purpose of making it difficult for other members, OK (this is still completely within the rules)

I voted that I could do as I please with my points as long as it falls within DVC rules.
I cant think of onw member who would make multiple resvervations with the intent of making it more difficult for another member to get a reservation. The people who cant get the studio can always get waitlisted.
Plans change,

Specifically, making two reservations for a potential renting customer who is only going to use one, is OK?

Since some members do this for themselves (make more than one reservation until they can "make up their mind"), why is it wrong to do it for a renter??

I wish people wouldn't do this (I even cringe when I read about it on the resort boards), but as far as booking reservations go, there is no easy, inexpensive way to make a different set of rules for renters than the rules that exist for members in general. In fact, I don't think there is a legal way to do it.

Therefore, we are talking about "values", right?? Makes for an interesting discussion, but one that will never resolve into any kind of consensus.

IMHO, this discussion is no different than one bout "politics" and "religion". Hard to discuss in public without generating a heated argument! :teeth:

The difference being, of course, that most of the things you listed here are not just poor manners, but are against the rules as well. Stealing, littering and vandalizing are hardly the same thing as making two reservations for the same time when you know you won't use one of them.

I guess I just don't see why it matters SO much to people such that if someone does this, it means that they don't have any values. I don't believe that in every situation just because you CAN do something, you SHOULD do it... BUT one of the things that DVC sells is flexibility. If someone were to purchase enough points to allow them the flexibility to double book and allow them the flexibility to choose which booking to keep and still cancel within the allowable cancellation period, what is the big deal? If you have the points, you can do with them what you please. If someone else wants those same nights, they can get on the waiting list and when they come through, they can have them. First come, first served.

What will be next, telling people that if they use DVC every christmas they are selfish because there are people who might get blocked out of using DVC on christmas because they want to book 4 months out instead of 11 months out day by day? Telling people that they can't exchange their points for cruises or II exchanges or concierge collection because then some DVC members might not be able to stay at their preferred DVC resort while non-DVC members who exchanged in are staying there? Those of you who use grand villas all the time, I think you are being selfish by doing so. Wouldn't fairness dictate that you give it a rest and allow other members the use of this extremely limited room type?

Who cares that you bought enough points to allow you to stay in a grand villa all the time, or stay at WDW every year at christmas time, or exchange out to go to Hawaii? You're hogging limited resources for yourself and making it impossible for other DVC members to use them.

IMO, the reason we HAVE rules is that so one group of people can't impose their "values" on another unless they go through due process to change the rules.
