Poll - Actonel for Osteoporosis

Do you or have you taken Actonel for the treatment of Osteoporosis? If you have taken it, what side effects did you experience?

I haven't, but I'm curious to hear if someone has. Bone cancer left me with osteoporosis at a very young age, and it's now getting to the point where I need something to help me with it. I have no idea what I'm going to be put on.

My mom takes Actonel (she's 86), and I don't think she has any side effects. I'm not even sure what they might be. Is jaw problems a possibility? Because I think when she was taking Fosamax, my sister told her about possible jaw problems, and mom stopped taking it (even tho she didn't have the jaw problems, and the Fosamax helped increase bone mass), but I talked her into starting up again.

My MIL has been taking it for about 5 months now. No noticeable side effects. She is 77. She started taking it to eliminate a pill a day.

Never took it, but I've taken care of two patients with osteonecrosis of the jaw from Actonel.

I haven't taken it, but I too have seen patients who have taken drugs meant for osteoporosis end up with osteonecrosis. In the cases I've seen, necrosis became an issue when there were tooth extractions. Sad to find out that drugs meant to build the bone can actually cause jaw bone destruction.
