And they say the Bush team doesn't care about the plight of the American worker :rotfl:

Unhappy Workers Should Take Prozac --Bush Campaigner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A campaign worker for President Bush (news - web sites) said on Thursday American workers unhappy with low-quality jobs should find new ones -- or pop a Prozac to make themselves feel better.

"Why don't they get new jobs if they're unhappy -- or go on Prozac?" said Susan Sheybani, an assistant to Bush campaign spokesman Terry Holt.

The comment was apparently directed to a colleague who was transferring a phone call from a reporter asking about job quality, and who overheard the remark.

When told the Prozac comment had been overheard, Sheybani said: "Oh, I was just kidding."

While recent employment growth has buoyed Bush's economic record, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) has argued the new jobs are not as good as those lost due to outsourcing in recent years.

Nearly 1.1 million jobs have been lost since Bush took office in January 2001.

how much do you want to bet she is not an assistant to the spokesman anymore?

just how are they supposed to afford the prozac if they're in a low-quality job?

Good point ::yes::

Maybe she should have said, "Oxycontin" -- it's apparently the drug of choice for the poor.

Oh come on - haven't you ever made a sarcastic comment, even an inappropriate one, when you thought you were talking in privacy? Don't get me wrong - the fact that it actually was overheard was a mistake on her part. Okay - I suppose I should be saying that we shouldn't ever be making ignorant comments like that, even in privacy.

But I guess my point was that I don't think she actually believes that. She was just being flippant.

You should really have stopped with "I suppose I should be saying that we shouldn't ever be making ignorant comments like that, even in privacy. "

Sorry, but I don't think saying something in private that you wouldn't say in public is somehow a better thing. Is someone who only makes fun of black people in private somehow less of a bigot than a KKK member that only appears under a sheet ? Not saying this is the same exact thing, but you get my point.

Sorry..."I didn't know they were listening" is hardly an excuse.

As for:

I thought Rush was doing pretty well...certainly well enough not to qualify as "poor" :rotfl:

I read this story earlier and was ...hmmmmm....surprised? Yeah, sure, we all say things we do not mean to have overheard.....but isn't it precisely the things we say in private that show who we are?

What did Mary Antionette say? "Let them eat cake".....
Oh minniepumpernickel !!! That is exactly what I was thinking of too lol

You know I read somewhere that the quote by Mary may have been altered over the years. It may really have been,"Let them eat Brioche." It still has the same meaning anyway!

Hope that you are enjoying the convention as much as I am!:sunny:

Re-read what I said. I didn't say it was an excuse. All I said was that I didn't believe she meant it. I said it was an ignorant comment that I think she said flippantly. I STARTED with "haven't you ever..." but ended up with "we shouldn't".

But, as FIK stated better than I, it is the thing we say in private that truly defines us, much more so than the facade that we present to the public.

In the Huxley novel "Brave New World", they make the lower echelons of society take "soma" to make them happier with their lot in life and keep them from complaining. Hmmm...

I love that book! Huxley was such a visionary, wasn't he? Weren't they also deprived of oxygen in the test tube to stunt their mental development? So scary!:earseek: ;)

That settles it! If it's good enough for Rush...well hey, oxycontin all around!

BTW - I lived in your state in the early 80's - in Charleston to be exact. (Gotta be the nicest people we ever met!) The unemployment rate was 25% and things were pretty dismal. How's the economy these days?
