Political Correctness run amok again!

but Irish isn't a derogatory term, honkey, kike and redskin are

But the connotation that Irish are all angry little Leprauchauns (sp?) who like to beat people up could bug people. :rolleyes1

Not me, mind you -- I just don't like Notre Dame :teeth: :teeth: :lmao: :lmao:

It's not like we had a Native American as our mascot or anything.
We do! We've got Chief Wahoo! Although we sure don't see as much of him as we used to :sad2: . They talked about changing the name of the Cleveland Indians to something more PC, but everyone said, "Heck, no." Even the Indian groups said that it was ridiculous.

If people want to take offense where none is intended, let them be offended.

I like the Indians, I like Chief Wahoo, and I'm not apologizing.

So, blah.

I agree that it's asburd to change all teams with Native American nicknames, but in the case of Redskins, I believe it's a good idea.

IA, it is an offensive term. It is not the name of a tribe or anything. You don't see the same outrage at those named after tribes and without ridiculous racist mascots.

Would anyone tolerate a team called the "Whiteskins" or the "Blacks"?

There is a rugby team from New Zealand called the All Blacks.

I guess that I see it as one group naming a nation of people based on a physical caractoristic, rather than respecting that nation and calling them what they prefered to be called.

I am part hispanic, and I would be offended to be called by the color of my skin, even if you could come up with a name that is accurate for it! Let alone any of the derogatory names for hispanics!
But we always referred to them as Red Indians to differentiate them from the Indians from India who were better known.

Fair enough, but they weren't Indians at all! I do see your point, and I am not militant about this. Just musing about my thoughts. They are affected by living in an area that is primarily caucasion and having odd looks from folk on occasion.

Oddly enough, everyone assumes I work at a Mexican restaurant (I'm not Mexican) or that I know of someone to do labor. (one of the 20 relatives that live in our home, I guess!)

I think it is very easy for someone who is a majority to think they are not being offensive. But it is self-centered thinking, in general.

But does it have to do with race? Or is it because they all wear black? Black is a color- Redskin is a racial term. IF a team were named the "Blacks" and it was meant racially, then it would be different. And if a teams were just the "Reds", well that is a whole different meaning than "Redskins."

Current University of Maryland student here- where is the OP getting her info from??? I cant find it anywhere in the news and nobody else around here has heard this yet. :rolleyes1

Her kids play in Bel Air. Maybe it is on the local Bel Air football league website or in the Aegis. (I am in Bel Air at least once a week and consider College Park a world away. :rotfl: )

I believe that it's the clothing that is black.

There was a team recently called "the Fighting Whities." Fine by me.

PC runs amok. Maybe we should make all those team that have "demon" or "devil" in their name remove them. (They must be worshiping Satan.)

Of course in Chicago here, they are trying to name a street after a "Black Panther" who was involved in killing cops. :sad2:

EWWWWWWWWWWWW

To the OP--I'm from the same area as you and just out of curiousity, I was wondering what school/rec you were referring to? With having the Washington Redskins so close by, it seems silly for the little guys to have to change their name but not the big guys as well.

Political correctness on a whole is out of control. My old elementary/middle school has been struggling for years to come up with a new "mascot" (in quotes because there is no mascot just a name), because they're the AVS Braves. I'll never understand how Braves is derogatory, and I've got a whole lot of Native American blood running through my body.
We're actually dealing with a PC issue here at my college. The administration has banned the traditional song that the hockey team skates in too. Would not be an issue if they could find a song that was still up beat and got people clapping and excited, but they haven't mastered that yet. All because one person complained about a song that they (from what I understand, since I only heard it at hockey games) misunderstood the words to, but as the US Hockey coach, she had enough pull to get bigwigs involved

Harford County- Bel Air Redskins/Terrps

While it is possible to go too far, generally, how far is too far is a matter of subjective judgement, and the people offended are harmed more by being offended than the people commiting the offense are harmed by having to be more considerate, so their perspectives deserve greater consideration on that basis alone.

Horrors! Think of those poor children. :grouphug: to you and all the suffering kids going through this crisis.

The claim that PC is running amok, is by itself, out of control. What exactly does PC mean? Does it mean not nicknaming sports teams racially ignorant terms? What ever happened to common sense?
