After just listening to the 10/23 voicemail podcast and hearing that you thought paczki and gawumki are made up words, I have to tell you that they are not. Although the pronunciation may sound funny the words are real and the foods are delicious.

Yep, being of some polish decent myself (thanks Grandma), I can vouch for those words. Every year on Fat Tuesday, I have a paczki myself. I can't say I care for gawumki or chenina (duck blood soup ), but I can't turn down a fresh paczki or some nice kolaczki's filled with apricot!!

I grew up in a community of mainly Polish decendants. At my class reunion they served kielbasa and sauerkraut and my DH was like WTH? Most of the kids I went to school with had names you couldn't pronounce if you saw them.
Occasionally I will hear a Polish name on the news and totally crack up because they are butchering it. As I heard someone once say, "You just have to know your Polish ABC's".
