Just curious if I am the only person who would love to see Disney add a police and firefighter discount for rooms and tickets. Yes I am from a cops family, but I know lots of other families that going to Disney is just a dream b/c of the low salaries of these professions.

I LOVE that disney is honoring our armed service with discounts. I don't want to trade one discount for the other. I want to know who would like to see it ADDED!

Thanks.

How about teachers and federal employees? Both of these groups are notoriously underpaid and both perform duties that are essential to our country's survival. There are some medical professional - docs and nurses, therapists, aides, etc - who also aren't paid that much and also perform essential duties. Where does it stop?

Maybe Disney should add to the cost of the money grubbing professions instead of giving a discount to the deserving groups. It might be easier.;)

Yep, I second the teachers thing. Especially child care workers... they are grossly underpaid and kids learn most before age 5!

But with all these discounts, who is going to end up paying full fare?

There is no question that there are other professions that are grossly underpaid. Our salaries are upside down in my opinion. But the difference between these underpaid professions is that usually a teacher and child care worker are not putting their lives at risk to serve you. The cops and firefighters in the larger cities are in a daily war. And that war is spreading into the smaller cities.

Have you ever been in an innercity school? I wouldn't entirely validate your statement. I go back and they scare me, even though I grew up in one.

Yes, cops and firefighters perform a great service. Life would be really bad without them. Yes, Disney should have discount for them.

I also wish Disney would've given military discounts while I was actually in the military.

There are discounts for teachers and federal employees at the Swan and Dolphin. No ticket discounts that I know of, and I've been looking because my SIL is a teacher and her husband is a cop and they can't afford to go to WDW right now. We took my SIL and 2.5yo niece in May and aside from being terrified of the characters, she had a great time. I'm glad we took her, but it would be great if they could go as a family, since unfortunately we can't afford to pay for my BIL and nephew as well.

Being from a cop family, I would definately use the discount if it was offered. I would never turn down a discount LOL

BUT I agree with other posters that there are many other professions that would deserve a discount also. Teachers come to mind as do other jobs.

BTW, police and fire do qualify for the swan/dolphin discount as "local government" employees. The government rate covers federal, state and local government employees.

If anyone can get a discount, great for them I say. Those are two groups who put themselves on the line. Not the only 2 groups, clearly, but I'm happy if someone else can have something good happen to them.

Give 'er!

What about SAHMS? I can personally vouch that we do the most important job there is and get the lowest pay! Give me the discounts! LOL!

I agree :Pinkbounc

I absolutely think these folks should be given discounts, and no, my family wouldn't qualify. I think besides the obvious benefit of the vacation being less expensive, it's important that Disney's values stay pro-family, pro-America--that kind of thing--and offering discounts to the military and the police and firefighters is one way of stating this and doing this.

Although I wouldn't resent such discounts if they appeared on the scene, they're not something I would request or be an activist for (even though members of my family would, in fact, benefit). I voted "nope" even though that word seems a little flippant for how I feel on the subject.

There are simply too many special interest groups for whom one could make the case that their respective contributions to society entitles them to discounts. Cops and firefighters, sure, moms (stay at home or non - ALL moms work hard for low/no pay for their parenting efforts ...dads, too, for that matter), clergy, healthcare workers who work in underserved locations for very small pay, ditto attorneys working in LegalAid, educators, Habitat for Humanity volunteers, shelter employees, truckers who get our stuff from coast to coast while keeping mind numbing hours, ...you get my drift.

So, I'm a little stupid, what is SHAMS? Could it be stay at home moms? My DREAM....

Anyway. I appreciate everyone's opinions. I asked the question afterall. I do want to respond b/c I think that for some reason, cops and firemen aren't respected as they used to be. Not that I am saying ANYTHING about any of the posts. I am just trying to make an additional point.

I guess society has forgotten that still cops, firemen and the military are the only group of people that get paid to RUN INTO DANGER ON YOUR BEHALF. You can not say that about any other profession. Teachers can have it real bad, stay at home moms deserve to be honored by society by raising children themselves rather than in a day care (please no flaming about day care, I'm not saying one is better). We could list valuable things about EVERY profession. Each of us provides an important link in our societal chain. No doubt about that.

My original question was to see IF anyone thinks about the guys in blue or heat protective gear that WILL COME if you call 911. Your neighbor might also, but unless he/she is trained and/or armed it may not be enough help so save your life or property. I may be totally off, but I have another question. Why would you be upset if they offered a discount to this group of people? Somehow being upset over another different group getting a discount seems selfish.

I am perpetually blown away at the lack of respect for cops. Lots of people don't teach their kids to respect cops anylonger. Sure, there are bad cops, but they are few and far between all the good ones who willingly risk their lives for you. And firefighters were loved and respected for about a year after 911, but that's all but stopped now. It's just such a shame.

I understand what you are saying Fam4jc and I do agree that they have added risk. They also chose that profession KNOWING the risks and knowing the pay. They made the choice as I made my choice to be a stay at home mom-SAHM. I was only kidding about actually wanting a discount because I chose to be a SAHM. I do think it is the most important job out there and believe that if one deserves a discount then SAHM definitely do. There are too many occupations and life choices out there to even begin to believe that one is more important then the other.

Wow, fam4jc, you are brave to take this stand--but, I do have to agree with you completely on this--just want to reiterate. I do think it would behoove Disney to show appreciation for these groups as they do the military. These are the only people who join up while specifically knowing the risks involved. And, I want to stress that this benefit would not affect our family personally. Of course, I would love if Disney was a bit less expensive. In 1995 we flew down for a week, stayed at a beautiful resort, and got hopper passes for a family of 4 for under $1000. This year, it's costing more than double. Regardless, other workers and stay at home moms (me, namely!) have other benefits that police and firefighters don't have--including the comfort of safety and security every morning.

You are right, there is a lack of respect for police and firefighters. I see it everyday. My dad was a cop for 36 yrs (just retired in April :D ) I worked for several years in law enforcement and DH is currently a police officer (13yrs) I personally would not be upset one way or the other if they offered a discount. Like I said, I would definately take advantage of it. But I can see why Disney would not do it. They would have alot of backlash from people in other professions. Like another poster said, where does it end?

BTW, I am currently a SAHM (stay at home mom) and DH has said himself that my job is much more stressful and harder than his any day! :hyper: After a few days off, he runs out the door to go back to work! LOL (That is not meant to offend anyone, I think being a good parent, whether its SAHM or a working parent is the most important job there is)

It is our goal to be a sahm,Stimpy (a family goal). When we get out of debt. If we can keep things on schedule that will be next school year. You are right, there is not a more important job than parenting. But I want to be sure someone comes if my 5yr old sets the house on fire!

:teeth: just being silly

deb&bill - I was just rereading this thread and your post cracked me up. I don't know how I missed its humor the first time. yes, why doesn't Disney charge triple to, lets say famous actors and fourtune 500 c.e.o.'s , but wait, they are probably spending other people's money! ...
Very, very funny.:p :yo-yo:

My husband is a 13yr veteran police officer and I am a police dispatcher.. While I would take any discount that comes our way because of it I won't be upset if there isn't one, ever.

I think that it is very nice and considerate of the businesses that do offer us a disocunt. However, I feel very uncomfortable as well as dh has the same feeling whenever we are offered something for a discount or even for free. If ever we are offered something for free or at a discount we always put the money that we would have given the store into the tip jar.

While we both believe that police officers deserve more respect, respect is not given/shown through a discount. It is shown through attitude.

Just my opinion.

Why do people think working mothers don't raise their children? :confused3 It doesn't matter if you're a SAHM or a working mom, we all work hard. We all pretty much want the same things for our children.

I voted no for the discounts. I'm sure people from various groups can all come up with reasons why they should get discounts. It would be impossible to please everyone.

I love the general room codes, anyone can use them. If someone is willing to buy an AP, then they can take advantage of the AP rates.
