Pokemon GO In the Parks?

This isn't what OP is talking about, though; many people in the parks, I've found as well, are considerate of other people taking photos, and so will stop or go around you. OP recognizes this, and says that they'll make an effort to face walls, stand off to the side, et cetera, lest others think they're trying to catch that perfect shot, and not that perfect Pokémon. :-)

Marciemi mentioned that sometimes the pokemon just happens to be in a photo spot/open space, implying that they couldn't move their phone without losing the pokemon - thus the suggestion to turn AR off since they would no longer have to keep their phone pointed out, and could instead point it at the ground :)

We are coming to WDW in Sept. I'm getting excited. What "rare" pokemon have you all caught in the parks, and where? :)

I'm not sure what is considered rare in the rest of the world since WDW is my only frame of reference...
But I catch a lot of Psyducks and Slowpoke. Dratini and Meowth pop up periodically, but definitely not every day.
Scyther shows up for me about once a week at Magic Kingdom. I also caught a Snorlax just past the MK turnstiles

Epcot and Animal Kingdom seem to have the widest variety in the parks. The resorts are great as well - I had great luck at Wilderness Lodge, and have had some good ones pop up on the tracker while taking the monorail around.

Thanks, Liz,
I've never seen a dratini or a snorlax yet, so that would be cool. What's a tracker?

P.S. We have "sticker shock" re. how much the park passes cost now, so I'm having to think long and hard about how many days and which parks we are going to. The only one I know for sure is Magic Kingdom because of all the new content. Is it really worth going to Animal Kingdom for the park, not the pokemon? Thanks to anyone who can answer that!

The sightings menu in the bottom right corner than shows what pokemon are nearby :)

That was the only Snorlax I've found so far, but I have caught enough Dratini to evolve to a Dragonair, but I'm still working on Dragonite

Just to expand on my earlier post, Wilderness Lodge has had Magnemite and Machop (the only place I've found them), as well as some high level Tentacruels. Epcot I caught a Ryhorn (the only I've seen around here). Ponyta was appearing in the MK parking lot for a while, though I haven't seen it recently. Every park and resort also has multiple gyms, and while you probably won't be able to hold Cinderella Castle for long, it's still fun to battle everywhere

When are you going? And the best way to reduce the sticker shock is to plan a longer stay rather than shorter - once you get past 4 days it's not much more than $10 a day. But up until that point you're paying significantly more each day. I really like AK now with all the night stuff - EE, the Safari, Kali all have a different feel at night and the Tree of Light is incredible. Assuming you're going after JB show ends and before ROL starts (if ever) I still think those things are worth it. But if you're only doing a 2-3 day trip, then I'd definitely pass on it in favor of MK and Epcot.

The parks seem to be a better place to stock up on Pokestops since there are so many within walking distance and also amass the "easily evolved" Pokemon like Rattata/Pidgey/Weedle/Magicarp/Caterpie to help build up your level. I'm in a FB WDW Pokemon Go group and people periodically seem to find some of the rare Pokemon but I haven't seen a lot even being in the parks somewhat regularly. I think I've seen all the ones Liz mentioned (although got my Snorlax off WDW property) along with a few other slightly more rare ones: Abra, Pinsir, Magmar, Slowbro, Nidorina, Jigglypuff, Hitmonlee, Growlithe, Gloom, Koffing, etc. But I've never seen any of the high level 3rd evolution ones (I did catch a level 92 Beedrill yesterday - what's the point of that?) ;) I've been in all 4 parks & Disney Springs (and Typhoon Lagoon) several times each and really don't see a huge difference between them in terms of available Pokemon & Pokestops so I wouldn't let that factor in your park/days decisions. A lot of times it just comes down to how many people are dropping lures as to how productive your day is - weekends & evenings seem better than mornings during the week when most people there are focused on rides.

Thanks, Marcie,
We'll be there Sept 6-15, with the weekend in Vero Beach (Friday and Saturday costs more DVC points, so it's better to go to a "cheaper" DVC resort or to "take the weekend off" entirely. We have seen the space coast and the gulf coast in the past that way.) Many of those days I thought we could enjoy WDW without going into the parks, but I'm trying to get a feel for how much we'll probably have to spend on tickets. Will they let you add onto a park hopper before the day is out if you find you'll need an extra day? The DVC phone operator said yes, but I'm not sure I believe everything she says. There are also things they don't tell us, which is why it's important to check with you all, my fellow DIS-ers!

Yes, you should be able to add on to a parkhopper ticket as long as you haven't maxed out the 10 days (which it sounds like won't be an issue). Disadvantage is that you won't be able to book FPP for those days until you do add on and you'll need to do so before you leave the last park on the final day of use (so if it's a 3 day ticket, even though you have 14 days to use those 3 admissions, you can't wait until day 6 if you used the tickets on days 1-3).

Hey MJ,

We were at Disneyland just the other day (we went to catch the last of the 60th celebrations) and played a lot of Pokémon GO. In our experience, Pidgey was omnipresent, Rattata and Zubat less so, with plenty of Tauros, Staryu, Machop, Geodude, Mankey, Rhyhorn, Doduo, Omanyte, Krabby, Ekans, Meowth, and Growlithe. Of course, the best part were the numerous -- and I mean CRAZY -- amount of lured PokéStops. It was insane!

I've got a Gyarados now because there are so many Magikarp at WDW.

If you're looking for lures being dropped, try Disney Springs - the entire place seems to be lured most of the time. and no park tickets needed.

Don't take this personally, but people who play this "game" probably did not date much in high school.

I don't really remember high school. But I've walked 30 miles I would not have walked otherwise.

I made it over to Epcot and then DHS last Sunday and was blown away by the number of Pokestops, especially at Epcot. While waiting in line for Frozen I was able to spin 3 at once and all three had lures in them. Made for a nice 50 minute wait. Didn't see anything to rare, but the Magikarp were flowing like wine.

I wasn't prepared for it and went through my fully charged phone battery and a backup battery by 2pm.

Me too. I got q bunch of Magikarpsat grand floridian and disney springs

We caught Gyarados at AK while eating lunch at Flame Tree by the water. Definitely the best catch of the trip!

Wow. I didn't even know Gyarados were something you could catch in the wild! Luckily for me, our local Pokemon hotspot is also a Magikarp nest so I got my Gyarados the old fashioned way...amassing 400 Magikarp candies and evolving it.

It's funny, we're on a "Disney break" but once the kids found out that Cinderella Castle is a Gym, they instantly wanted to go to Disney just to fight in the castle. LOL! I told them we were NOT paying $$$$$ for a Disney vacation just so they can play a game we play at home for free! I need to learn not to share so much Pokemon knowledge with them.

A CM once told me, and a tram full of guests, that there was a Charizard in the Goofy parking lot(I was at HWS).
There was no Charizard...
