Can anyone explain to me if there is a order in which to buy these? I see so many of them and not sure which one to start with for my 7 year old (who loves Pokemon). Looking a buying a couple for our long road trip back to KY. Thanks

If you're going to buy a couple, I'd get the different types. There's the regular 'ol Pokemon, Ranger, and Mystery Dungeon ones. They all have slightly different gameplay, which makes for a nice break from one or the other. I haven't played the Mystery Dungeon games, but I have played the originals and Ranger, which I really enjoyed.

I'd just buy a few used ones at Gamestop. The original Ranger is only like $10, probably less now.

Take him to Gamestop with you. There are just too many.;)

I second this ^, as my DS9 is the Pokemon expert in our house!
Also, I think some games are two versions of the same game, such as Diamond/Pearl, Heartgold/Soulsilver and the new White/Black, so don't double up on those.

Thanks everyone! I was looking in his case and he has heartgold, soulsilver and ranger, think I may try Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and then try a totally different one called Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (which has great reviews).
Any thoughts on these two?

BTW, Diamond/Pearl, Gold/Silver and even Black/White are different games. They actually have different Pokemon that you can't get in the other. Also, it's based on different main Pokemon. Yes, the gameplay itself is about the same but that's true for any of the Pokemon games. The starter Pokemon are the same as well. There is a difference in the ones you can catch which (in several versions) can be traded via wi-fi to get other ones. Yes, DH and I have been playing for more years than I care to think about. In fact, we're going this weekend to GameStop to get a download character which can then be traded to Black/White to open a new area to catch a special Pokemon. There are often special events at GameStop and Toys R Us where you can download special characters and that's the only way you can get them.

The gameplay IS different in the Ranger and Mystery Dungeon games.

OP, I've played Dragon Quest and your son will probably enjoy those just as much.

The standard pokemon games arrive in generations.

Generation 1: Fire Red and Leaf Green (GBA only)
Generation 2: Heart Gold and Soul Silver (can get these for DSi)
Generation 3: Ruby, Saphire and Emerald (GBA only)
Generation 4: Diamond, Pearl, Platinum (available for DSi)
Generation 5: Black and White (for DSi, comes out in March)

Pokemon is awesome because how indepth it is. A seven year old can play the game and enjoy the basics, but someone like me plays it for breeding, chain breeding to create moves on different pokemon, finding rare shiny pokemon (1/4000 or something like that is shiny), evo'd pokemon... the list goes on and on, this game has so much to do if you want to put the effort, it is awesome.
