Whats the minimum points you can buy from disney once you are in the system ? The reason I ask is that we would commonly need 252 points when we vacation but most contracts are either 250 or 270 that Ive seen. And does disney include them in your use year ?

there are a lot of resales at any where from 50 pts to 1000 pts. try the timeshare store on the site. I would try to buy smaller contracts than 250 just so I could sell one later. you can't break up contracts. I would do 150 and 100 contracts.

when you get in you can buy from disney 25 pts cash or 50 +financed

ONce in 25.

Just a minor word of advice, I noticed you said you would commonly need 252 points. I'm assuming you are looking at a point chart and picking a specific room type for a specific period and getting your "need" from that. If that is what you are doing, you should realize the point charts can and will change, If you haven't read the mega-thread in the DVC-planning forum on the 2010 point chart changes, you should read a little bit.

Many DVC'ers feel in a bind right now because they had bought a specific number of points to vacation at a specific time and now with the point chart changes for 2010, they are going to have to make some sort of a change, either add more points, downsize room, or cut back on nights.

Again, just a word of advice, if my assumption is correct, a 270 point contract (or so) that you mentioned might make you happier in the long run.

Minimum add on is 25 except at BLT it is 100 (with current exception of 25 for those who purchased before announcement of point chart changes). Disney will sell you an add-on only if it is in the same use year you already have unless you purchase the "new purchaser" minimum (currently 160 points ) and request a different use year. If you buy resale at a sold out resort, you can still get an add-on through Disney because it can reaquire points, either through foreclosures or exercise of right of first refusal for resales, but you may sometimes be put on a waitlist. Nevertheless, when considering current purchase, you should assume that you will be better off buying more points than precisely 252 because of the risk of point shifts like one that just occurred, lowering weekends and raising weekdays and shifting some among seasons, which is effective 2010. In other words, there is always a risk that 252 may go higher, although it could also go lower in any shift.

Remember that if you are purchasing direct from Disney, if you "need" 252 points for your typical planned vacation, then you can purchase an original contract of 252 points! You do NOT have to purchase in multiples of 10 or anything else as long as you reach the minimum of 160 in a given contract. Of course, many would give you the advice to at least make one contract smaller, so doing a 160 point contract plus a 92 point contract might make more sense.

yes, it has to be the same UY month if you add-on directly.

(but as already stated, feel free to add on 26 pts or 37 pts if you are paying cash or 53 pts if you are financing...and to break up add-ons into a series of 50ish pt contracts to get to the number you want.)

Also, worthy of note is, as I understand it, you can add on 25 points or 50 any number including +1, +2, etc.. You just can't do "+1" until you hit the 50 point threshold and you can't do less than 25.

Make sense?

You're exactly right Diane and that's what I was going to suggest. I can't tell from the original post whether they are already owners or not but you can certainly do +1 in any multiple to an original minimum buy-in contract and if they're not owners already, that is certainly the way to go.

Of course, I would split anything over the minimum into 25 point deals as sub-contracts after the minimum buy-in requirement was fulfilled for future resale value but that's sort of getting into another philosophy of buying and that might be beyond the scope of this course. :)

Disney will never offer you a different use year unless YOU demand it and understand the implications of it. Many here do it but you must understand how to manage it.

New UY's are new master contracts (IF purchased through Disney) and therefore fall under the minimum buy-in for any given resort.

While there are specific reasons many here choose to do new master contracts, for most, it is unnecessary. Most here that do this have a thorough understanding of the system and how it works before they jump in.

I don't think you can do +1 until you get to 50. At least that's what I thought I understood. Someone will come along and set us straight.

I'm pretty sure 25 sits out there as a lone offering until you add-on 50+.

my 40 pt contract says you are mistaken... ;)

Apologies. I guess I misunderstood. Is your 40 point contract fairly recent or is it an older resale? I could have sworn that's what the 50 point boundry was all about when my guide explained it to me. Otherwise; what would be the point of talking about anything beyond 25? :confused3

I remember something magical about 50 and I thought that was what it was.

This was all before BLT and the new minimums applicable to it.
