Points transfer, is member # necessary?

My mom is renting some points for transfer into her account. She's rented before and had the points transferred by giving the other member her name and address. The person she now has set up to rent some points from has a certified check in his hand from her ($11/point) but insists she give him her member number before MS will transfer the points. Advice? thanks

I think they would need the number to complete the transfer.?.?

That's what the other member is saying, but that is not the case. (She's done points transfers before without giving out her member number....or maybe it depends on who one asks at MS.) I just think her member number is like her SSN, it's not something to just give out?

I have done 3 transfers recently. All three times, I have needed the other members number. So, I would say she should cough it up . I think there is a way to do like a three way call with member services if she is uncomfortable. They need that number to do the transfer.

I have read that people were able to complete a transfer without the member number but that has not been my experience. I even called MS about this twice and both times I was told that the member number is required. I was told that as long as they do not have the last four digits of my SS# there is nothing they can do with the member number :confused3 I reluctantly gave in.

This example is one of my few complaints about DVC, and it is minor in reality, but you reqally have to be persistant with MS because you can get different answers from different people. Both my brother and I transfered points into other members accounts recently and niether of us had their account numbers...so to say you have to have it is absolutley false.
Of course they lady I was dealing with was told by two people at MS that she could not bank the points I transfered to her, which again is wrong, and I had to suggest she talk to a supervisor to get the correct information.
My best advice is know the rules and be polite but persistant. Good Luck.

I have done many transfers and never needed a membership number...

So has my mom! that is what is bugging her, she knows he is wrong. But -- it really does seem to depend on who you get at MS any given day. I doubt the other member is trying to be difficult, this is what he was told :confused3

I did a transfer a few months ago and needed the member number.

I'm not so sure giving someone your member number for a transfer is all that risky - especially now that we can view most transactions online. Seems like some of us are checking our accounts on a very regular basis, LOL.

Everytime I've called MS to make a reservation or bank points, I've had to give the last 4 digits of my social security number in addition to verifying my address and TN. I'm not advocating giving out a member number "willy nilly", but I don't see much of a risk giving it to someone who is going to transfer me points. JMHO. YMMV.

Best wishes -

It seems to depend on who you get in Member Services. It worked once for me to give my full name and last 4 digits of my member number. The next time Member Services insisted on the full member number and wouldn't make the transfer without it. I'm pretty sure they can look it up if they have your name, but some apparently don't want to do it that way.

....and needed the member's number. Without the last four digits of your SS #, knowing the number does nothing for someone else.

MS must be tightening things up then, because I have never - ever - been asked for any part of my SSN when calling. So it would seem to me that, at least in the past, if someone had your name and member number, they had a lot. Personally I'm glad if MS is now asking for a bit more information.

.....last two days to MS and in each case I was aksed for my member number and the last four digits of my SS #.

I'm considering having points transferred into my account. I was told that the other person will need my account number and name. Could be done without them having my full account number. With my name and last 4 account numbers, they could deposit into my account. If there's any confusion, member services will request an email or fax with complete member number and signature. The one transferring points has to initiate the transfer of points though. That's how I remember it being explained to me. Otherwise, I've been given a person's whole member number to transfer into their account, and I've given out my whole member number to someone I was getting points from. I didn't keep records of their account number. As long as they don't have the last 4 digits of my ss#, they're out of luck if they want to access my account. Plus, I never have enough points in there!
