Points Transfer and Use Year...still confused.

I am a DVC member with a February Use Year. I am looking to obtain approx 500 points via transfer to add to my existing points for a big family trip in August 2017. I plan on booking the trip in January 2017 at my 7-month booking window.

Since 500-point transfers are hard to come by I was hoping to do two separate transfers. But my understanding is that I can only do one transfer per Use Year.

So my question is this...how are Use Years defined when being transferred from owners with different Use Years? If I get 350 points transferred in now that are 2015 points, can I also get 150 points transferred in a few months that are 2016 points? Or do I have to wait until February aka my next Use Year to do another transfer in?

Please help!

If you have a Feb UY, any points transferred to you would go into your current UY (although you can bank them to use for a reservation in the next UY - which August 2017 would be). The UY rule applies to your UY, not the members, in terms of transfers in to (or out of) your account, i.e. you can only have points transferred in (or out) once during your current UY (between 1 Feb 2016 and 31 Jan 2017).

Are you aware that you will be able to borrow points for your Aug 2017 trip? So you can bank this year's points into next year (Feb 1 2017-Jan 31 2018), use current points (new allowance available for bookings from Feb 1 2017 to Jan 31 2018) and borrow points from the next UY (Feb 1 2018-31 Jan 2019). So, essentially you will potentially have 3 years points to use yourself.

Transferred points are not a popular item for DVC and as such, finding an MS adviser who knows how to use them can be a challenge. Plus they don't show up in your account so you can only verify them though calling MS.

We transferred once and MS had such a time trying to use the points, they insisted that we didn't have any to use then they took so long to find them, we lost the inventory that they didn't hold. We will never transfer again.

While Bill is correct that the transferred points do not show up in your on-line account summary, I have transferred in points twice now and have had no problems with MS finding the points. Part of it could be that the home resort for the transferred points is different from my home resort and I only have one home resort, so finding the points has not been a problem. Keep it simple and MS can usually work things out for you, but throw in a couple of curve balls and MS has a difficult time. My problems with MS are with ticket usage not with using points...I still do not think they have the correct number of days remaining on my no-exp passes and this has been going on now for 4 years.

I've had a similar problem as that reported by Bill, but in my case the nights were booked with transferred points which later "disappeared." MS wanted me to find more points to actually use my reservation! Ultimately, I got to keep the reservation as a "courtesy."

But I have done another transfer since then. Which may just show I'm a glutton for punishment.

For transfers, you can receive points in your current UY and your next UY. Because you have a Feb UY, you are already in your 2016 UY and can no longer receive 2015 points. You can, however, receive 2017 points. Next February, you can receive 2018 points, but that won't help with a 2017 reservation.

Best of luck -- Suzanne
