Points to holding? Inside 30 Reservation Change

Inside 30 days on a split stay. The reservation is currently 3x5. I would like to make it 4x4 and the room I want for the last night of the first half is currently available. Assuming I cannot pull this off online without putting points into holding (or can I?), can MS pull it through without creating the same problem in dropping the first night of the second half of the stay? I hope the question makes sense. It might be helpful to know that adding the room to the first half will increase the room cost by two points over where we are moving to so the are no points coming back to me. I would net out two additional points 'spent' in other words.

I'm a frequent visitor, but we aren't historically split-stay vacationers, so I thought it best to run this by the experts. I know lots of us here routinely do split stays.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Earth's getting sort of big in the window so if I can pull this off, the sooner the better and of course, there's the fact that that room is just sitting out there and may not be there tomorrow anyway, but I need to snag it ASAP if I can and this is doable without throwing points into holding unnecessarily. It just wouldn't be worth that. Not to us.

If you are within 31 days, all points will have a holding status....however, if you are using them right away, its more of a technical aspect than functional for you.

Since this is a split stay, you can drop the first night of 5, will see holding points, but when you go to book the 4th night for the first one, the system will take your holding points.

If the night you want is fewer points than what you have booked, then the freed up points will be in holding status....no way to avoid that if you touch the points being used within 31 days.

Hope this matches what you were asking!

Sandi gave the best possible advice on process, but remember there is always a risk that the room you want to add will disappear while you’re dropping the one you don’t want.

Adding to the above post, I think MS has the ability to put a room aside while making updates to a reservation like yours. I know they say the room(s) could be lost but I had an experience recently where I was looking to book last minute within 30 days of arrival. CM saw one room available for my length of stay and said “let me put that room aside and double check there’s nothing else available”.

Thanks folks! I really appreciate it. I'm going to call MS this afternoon and see if they can work it w/o putting a night's stay at risk. Like MDT said, I think they can and generally do anyway.

The risk of putting points into holding while actually making the change doesn't bother me for all of the reasons above. We're inside 30 days anyway so technically, if anything happens, the entire stay is at risk for holding as it would have been anyway. I just didn't want to book a night and pull new points for it, and then drop a night hand have those points go into holding. Now that I've said it 'put loud,' I realize I could probably do EXACTLY that, and then call MS and have them replace the points with the holding points.

I'm just going to call and let them do it. I'll probably sleep better that way anyway.

Thanks again. Exactly what this board is all about.

Definitely don’t ever use new points within 31 days because they will go in holding even if you replace them with other holding points.

I made that mistake!!!! So, if you booked new and dropped the current, those current would be in holding.

You could use them to replace the new one, but those points replaced would now become holding!!

So, definitely that would not have worked.

I didn't even think about that!

I did it through MS about an hour ago. NO hold time, and the MS rep literally did it in less than 5 minutes. No joke. As painless and as quickly as I have ever had anything done. It was a very pleasant experience. One I remember from my early years as a DVC member. Refreshing.
