Are any of the rooms at POR or POFQ available if you are a DVC member? I see that they do not offer villas but did not know if this was completely off limits for use of points.
I asked on the Resorts board and someone said that I may check on this board for a more firm answer.
You will usually get a better deal paying cash for any points stay outside of the DVC resorts.

So, basically not worth it to try to stay at PO if I have points?

Thank you all again for the help, I believe this puts everything into perspective. That is just the one moderate resort that I had always wanted to try out. I will likely save this place for a really short trip or when we are about to run out of points that are going to expire.
Either way it will be great to go back!
Keep in mind that the rule of four applies to Disney Collection reservations which makes it more difficult to use points that are about to expire.
Rule of Four:
- You cannot book and travel to a Disney Collection destination within the last 4 months of your Use Year (excluding Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort).
- You can, however, travel in the last 4 months of your Use Year as long as you have booked your stay more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year.
Just to give you an example...for a weeknight reservation...
Booking a standard view room at Port Orleans in May is 22 points.
Booking a standard view studio at the Grand Floridian in May is 21 points.
Booking a studio at OKW in May is 13 points.
So even the most expensive DVC resort is less expensive than booking a room at Port Orleans. In addition, you will have to pay a $95 fee to book the room at PO.
If staying at PO is something you've always wanted to do and you have the points to burn then it's definitely something you can do, but you will get more bang for your buck (bigger room, kitchenette, etc.) at one of the DVC properties. The only time I would book something in the Disney Collections is if I had points that were stuck as "Reservation Points" that I had to use outside of the DVC resorts.
What if no DVC property is available? I stayed at POFQ one time on points because every DVC resort was soldout out and I wanted to add a night to a business trip about 3 weeks out in mid October. This was before the $95 fee. I think it was like 18 points. I've also used points at DL before VGC was available.
That is up to you and how you feel about using your points. I don't think that any of us are staying don't do it or else, just be aware that Disney charges you a premium for using your points for anything other than a DVC stay and the premium wasn't enough so now they added a $95 fee and they will charge you another $95 fee each time you make changes to the reservation.
Instead of giving DVC owners a good deal to say that we appreciate your business and your love of Disney, they instead stick it to us. Not very Mouse like IMO.

When a member trades out to the Disney Collection, DVC has to send a DVC room to CRO. Sometimes they have a hard time selling that room especially when you have free dining and 35% room discounts available. They have given away SSR and OKW as free upgrades from values to fill them. Even though they pitch it as a selling point (stay anywhere!), the reality probably is they don't want to make it easy for members to stay elsewhere and have to deal with the CRO reservations and possibly losing money.
