We are thinking of taking a Caribbean cruise in January 2008. What are your opinions of using points for a cruise vs. paying cash? Also, is there much for a 2 year old to do?

Thanks :)

While we haven't cruised yet, I have spent some time on the DCL website understanding the cost structure of different cruises and times, and I'd say it's much better to pay cash for the cruise.

If you look at the number of points it costs and think about a cash value for each point (say $6 pp) you'll see that paying cash is much "cheaper". As mentioned all over these boards, using points for anything other than staying at a DVC is not the "best" use of points.

However, "best" might not mean the same to everyone. If you have the points but not the cash to book the cruise and you aren't going to need the points for a DVC stay, then that could be a way to go on the cruise and not require any cash output. So, there are pros/cons to using points you just have to figure out what would work best for you, but from an economical standpoint only... pay cash.

We used points to book our 4 day cruise for this Christmas. We bought our points to use for vacations and that's what we use them for. I know that we could rent out our points and use cash to book the cruise, but I tried that and it was a hassle. So, we cancelled our "for rent" thread and just used our points.

We HAVE the points, so we're going to USE the points.
