Hi all,

Pretty new member. I’m looking at booking a reservation for 2019 (April or May) after my 2018 use year is over (February). If I made a reservation using 2018 points for May 2019 and cancelled say 45 days in advance in March what would happen to my points? Would they then be expired?

Or would I first have to bank the points to even make the reservation using 2018 points so if I cancelled they’d be 2019 points?

Thank you! Hopefully I wasn’t too confusing on my question.

You cannot use Feb 2018 points to book an April or May 2019 stay unless you bank those points first. Once banked, those points can be used for making any reservation that begins on or after Feb. 1, 2019 but must not have a night later than Jan. 31, 2020.

If you were to cancel that Aoril/May 2019 stay before the penalty period (30 days or less before arrival) then you could use them for another reservation but they will expire on Feb 1, 2020. You would not be permitted to bank them again into your 2020 UY. If you cancel 30 days or less before arrival, the points go into "holding". You can still use them to make a reservation that ends before Feb. 1, 2020 but you would have to wait until 60 days prior to the start of the new reservation to be able to book anything.

That’s great. Thanks so much.

One follow-up. If I book using 2019 points can I change that to 2018 points later? Not sure yet if I’ll need to use more points this use year.

You can ask Member Services to reallocate the points. However, you would still have to bank the 2018 points first. The banking deadline for Feb. UYs is Sept. 30th. You will need to decide what you're doing with those 2018 points by then.

Yes, Member Services should be able to do it. I also have booked reservations with points from an appropriate use year, and then a while later I called Member Services to switch which points were being used. I had no problems. As long as they are on the same contract, it shouldn't matter. But I don't personally have experience with switching points that have been transferred, or from other contracts or membership numbers, and I think that would probably not be allowed, if the initial reservation was in the 7 to 11 month window, unless they are from the same resort.

Points can only be banked during the first 8 months of your UY. Your UY is not a calendar year. Points need to be available during the dates of your stay, not when you make the reservation. Banking moves points one UY forward, borrowing moves points one UY back. Banking and borrowing are final transactions and can not be reversed.

If you bank all of your points from 2018 Use Year into 2019 Use Year then they must remain in 2019. And you must use them before the beginning of the 2020 Use Year. Those particular points cannot be Banked, Borrowed or Transferred again.

After doing that, If you no longer have any points in the 2018 use year, but you did need to make a reservation for 2018, then you will need to borrow points from 2019 and bring them back into 2018. But those borrowed points then remain in 2018 and cannot be moved forward again.

Please develop a better understanding of these rules, it'll keep you our of trouble if you do. You really should be booking the April/May 2019 reservation now which means you'd really need to bank the 2018 points first. They usually will reallocate if you book using 2019 points and later bank points but this is not guaranteed. Plus your banking deadline is rapidly approaching. Also if you did book using 2019 points and needed more that you then borrowed from 2020, the borrowed points could not be returned to the 2020 UY.

Thanks for the insight. My issue is that due to sickness of family member we may cancel one of my studios for an upcoming trip so that’s what’s holding back the banking of points for this year but yeah we have to make a decision soon on that end.
