Pointers on renting points

I am considering renting out some extra points I have. Can anyone who has already done this before give out some pointers as to insure a smooth transaction to both parties. i.e. should they be banked first....?.....any tricks of the trade on transferring? what to beware of...? Do's and don'ts.

I haven't banked to transferred out any of my points so I can't help you with those things. :p However there are several members that have done both many times and can probably offer advice.

As far as renting out points, it has most always been a smooth process for me. Typically if we realize that the points won't be used I browse the boards for anyone looking for an amount of points to rent that I can afford to get rid of. I do most of my communication through email because I think it is easier...and its a solid paper trail ;) I explain to the renter my policies on renting and as long as they agree I make the reservation. Once that is made they receive the confirmation number with a points contract and have a specified amount of time to send payment. Once I receive that, I mail off the paper confirmation. That's pretty much it.

Its hard for me to speak about what not to do because I have had virtually no complications....I'm sure other have though so I hope they speak up! The only thing I can think of is that money orders are a pain....one renter used one to pay for the reservation but it got lost in the mail and unlike a personal check, its not so easy to void, etc. So I no longer accept those! :)

I am new to DVC, but I have done many transactions with strangers on Ebay. You have to be very clear and specific with what you want and what you are willing to accept or not accept. Like the tip about the money order is a good tip. Let a potential renter know right away that you will except personal checks only. This will avoid confusion and mis-communication during your transaction. Also, communicate often with the person you are dealing with. Not only do you want to feel comfortable with the transaction, but you want the other party to have the same comfort level. In the end taking the time to do the transaction right is always the best. Maybe the same renter will rent from you again in the future because of the good transaction you have with them now. Good luck with your renting!
