Point Value Outside Disney Resorts?

Many have written both pro's & con's on the utilization of points for outside resort locations.

For those that have used them to stay elsewhere, how do you place a dollar value on points when deciding to use them outside of DVC? Is there a particular formula that can be used?

The points don't really have a "fair market value" per se... Its more of what value you hold them at, and what kind of experience you are looking for....

That being said.... I generally use $10/pt as my rough estimate when making decisions... On average, points on the "Rent & Trade Board" go for between $7 and $10...

I don't know if this the best way, but for the most part, it works for me....

Yes it does make sense. I use $10.00 per point as the benchmark. I stayed at the Sagamore a couple of years ago when it was 26 (I think ) points per night but $299.00 to pay cash for the room. By dividing the cost (299) by how many points (26) it came to a value of $11.50 per point which is very good. I use $10.00 because we can normally rent DVC points easily for that amount to pay for other trips, like a cruise.

I tend to look at it more as what value I place on the location. We have only exchanged to Hawaii, and that is one of the few places I think is a good value of trade from DVC.

The Disneyland Hotel at DLP costs 84 points for a standard room on a Friday or Saturday night. And as it seems to have gone up by 15 -20 points per year for recently, goodness knows what it will be when I want to book in a couple of years. If I rent out the 84 points for $10 each, I can afford to stay for two extra nights.

The Disney and Concierge collection are a real mixed bag, with often little relation between the cash price of the hotel and the points required. Some are a reasonable deal, while others, particularly the DLP hotels, are not.

When I stayed at Sagamore in NY, the room was I believe about $450 if I paid cash, and the room itself was par with the one bedrooms at OKW, smaller bathroom of course. Now I paid 52 points a night for that stay or 156 points for 3 nights. At OKW I can stay in a one bedroom for 16 points per night. I would say you get killed staying at Sagamore when using your points.

Under your example you got killed. Under my example I did better than if I had rented out my points and paid cash. It was Thanksgiving time and they charge a lot for the room but the point amount was very low. That's why you have to look at each case on an individual basis.

I stayed at the Woodstock Inn as well and paid cash because it worked out the other way there.

Trading out from DVC, we've booked a week in Hawaii in a 1-bedroom at the Kona Coast II during March of 2005 for 144 points.

In comparison, a 1-bedroom at my home DVC resort for the same time period would cost me 270 points. I'm happy with the deal.

I have a different viewpoint on the value of the points. I paid x dollars for my points for a period of years. I pay dues on each point per month. That is my investment in each point, per year So, adding original cost to dues cost, my points have cost me maybe $5 to $6 each. I 'could' rent them out, for perhaps $10 each, but now my vacation has become work, another responsibility, so I don't worry about what I could possibly get for them if I rented them. I just consider what they cost me to acquire and maintain. So, if the room at Sagamore or The Grand Hotel or Woodstock costs, say $350 to rent, but costs only 40 points, and if I have those points available and don't need to go use them at Disney, then, using the points has saved me money as opposed to paying cash. I'm ahead of the game without having to rent or worry about them other then making the reservation. If at $6 per point it costs more points ....say 80 on the weekends instead of 40, then I would certainly keep my points and find a way to use them more wisely, and reconsider whether I could afford the additional cash vacation. Hope this makes some sense!

Most people say that a point is worth $10 right now. But I have been trying to figure this out since I signed up Sunday. Correct me if I am way off but:

For instance. I paid $79 per point for SSR and bought 270 points:

Points: $21,330 - ($79 x 270 Points)
Maintenance: $51,308.10 - (270*3.8006)*50 yrs - If you don't figure the increase over time.

These two combined equal $72,638.10. Divide that figure by 50 for each year of vacations, and it comes to $1,452.76 a year.

If you take $1,452.76 and divide that by the number of points you get each year in my case 270, so that equals $5.38 per point.

Of course, this does not take into account increases in maintenance over 50 years, but this is how I worked it out.
