I am going crazy trying to figure this out:

I want to take a trip in October 2005.
My home resort is BWV, use year December.
I am short 30 points for the accomodations I want.
I'd like to be able to reserve for the 10/05 trip at the 11 month window this November to be assured I get a 2 bedroom standard at BWV

Here is the problem:

I am trying to get another member to transfer the points to me, and I have offers to do so.
BUT, if I understand the system correctly, if I get the transfer, the points will be for a 2004 use year and won't be good for 10/05.
I could bank the points into my 2005 account, but since my use year is December, those points won't be good for a trip in October of '05. (again, if I understand the system correctly).

I called MS today to see if there was a solution I haven't thought of, but there was a recording stating that they request calls only be for ressies in the next 7 days because they were short handed due to the storm preparation.

Can anyone tell me if there is any way I could get the points transferred to my account by this November and use them for a trip 10/05? I sure hope so, because my brain hurts trying to figure this all out!

The only thing I can think of is to wait till December 1 to transfer the points into your account. They will then be 2004-2005 points usuable in October 2005.

But your December of 2004 use year is good for reservations between December 1, 2004 and November 30, 2005. So why wouldn't those points be good for October 2005. That is within your 2004 use year.

This is why I dislike December use years. They seem to be confusing.

That's about all I can think of too. I'll miss the 11 month window, but it will only be by about 2 and a half weeks, so chances are I'll be OK (I hope--the time I want to travel is both columbus week and food/wine fest).

Thanks for the input, unless someone can think of something else that's probably exactly what I will do. I'll reserve a one bedroom at the 11 month window to be sure I have something, then when I get the points transferred in December I'll hope a 2 BR is available to switch to, and I'll waitlist and hope for the best if it isn't.

I have one really nice poster who said he'll hold the 30 points for me until December. One last question if you (or anyone else of course) can help --When you transfer points do they retain their original use year? Do I have to be careful when I transfer that the points will not expire before October '05? Or do I have to be careful to get a transfer from someone with a December use year to be sure they are still good to use in 10/05?

Thanks so much for replying, and any other input from you are anyone else "in the know" would be GREATLY appreciated!

They do retain their original use year. That is one thing the Disney computer system can keep track of very well.

The way I understand it, if transferred points retain their use year, then I have to be sure they don't expire before the trip I want to take in 10/05. If I get points that expire prior to that, I would have to bank them. Then I won't be able to use them for any trips until December '05 when my use year begins.

Or am I missing something? It wouldn't surprise me LOL!

And yes, I do find the December use year very confusing, and if I had it to do over I'd try to avoid it. Too late now. :(

Yes the transferred points will retain their original use year.

Yes if the points expire prior to October of 2005, you would have to bank them.

It's the last part where you say that you "won't be able to use them for any trips until December of 2005 when my use year begins", that I don't follow. You seem to be mixing the transfered points use year and your own. Remember that you can make a reservation 11 months in advance, no matter what. You wouldn't have to wait until December of 2005. You can make them as soon as November of 2004 which is 11 months in advance.

Are you using December 2005 points for this reservation? If not, you could borrow the points you need from your 2005 use year and make the reservation in November 2004. You don't have to wait until December to borrow 2005 points.

Transferred points retain their use year. For example, if you would get a transfer of June 2004 BWV points, you could bank them to June 2005 and use them for this reservation in November 2004 (11 month mark). Member Service's computer sometimes has glitches with this, so make sure they know what you want to do.

No wonder you're confused, I am too! But here's what I am thinking:

If I bank the points into my 2005 use year, then won't I have to use them in my 2005 use year? And then since my allotment of points for 2005 won't begin until December 2005 how can I use them for a trip in October of that year? The way I see it any points banked into 2005 will be for 12/05-11/06.

I understand that I can make the ressie as long as the points will be in my account by the time I take the trip, but how can they be in my account and available to use by October 2005 when my use year is not until December of that year?

I just can't seem to get my brain wrapped around this, so thanks so much for your patience and help HBC!:wave2:

Yep, I am using borrowed 12/05 points for this trip.

If I do what you said, (borrow from someone with a June use year and bank them), and those points are good until June 2005, how can I use them to make a trip in October of 2005? Even if I make the ressie 11/04, won't the points good until June 2005 have expired for a trip 10/05? I thought the points had to be in your account when you took the trip?

-Again, thanks to everyone for trying to get this through my thick skull!

If someone transferred their June 2004 points to you and then you banked them to June 2005 use year, they would be good for stays 6/1/05 to 5/31/06.

You can't bank transfered points. Transfered points retain there UY and Home resort. Although, I have heared that the system changes them to your home resort. Which can be a good thing or bad thing depending on what you want to do them. If someone transfered points to you they would need to be used in the UY they came from only.

I have just recently received some transfered points from another member, and I have been allowed to bank them into my next use year.

I thought the rules were you couldn't transfer banked points, and not the fact you couldn't banked tranfered points.

That is my understanding as well. A number of people (including MS) have told me you can bank transferred points (but not the other way around).

Have you considered asking the "nice member" to just reserve the night(s) you're short? Yes, he/she would have to reserve whole nights, but then you wouldn't have to borrow as many points. I know you would lose some control, too.

Seems like it might just be a little easier than trying to figure all this out. (It's giving me a headache, too, LOL). MS could link the ressies for you so you shouldn't have to change rooms.

Best wishes -

P.S. Failing that, I'd try to find a BWV owner with a December use year so that the points transferred would have the same characteristics as your own. Easier to understand - you could just have the appropriate use year points transferred and voila! no more headaches! :teeth:

Thanks Carol, that's exactly what I concluded after all this back and forth. It seems like the most sensible solution. In fact just prior to reading your post I contacted the member I have been referring to and we did decide the easiest thing to do would be for her to rent the one day separately and link it to my own ressie.

My heartfelt thanks to everyone for all your helpful advice. What would I do without the DIS boards??? And sorry for anyone who got a headache reading this thread!!
