Point transfer payments between members

I was wondering what the typical (or should I say best) way to request payment from another member in a point transfer transaction.

All $ before the 3 way call transfer?
1/2 $ before and after?
I've read that some members accept a check after the transfer (seems too risky)

Checks vs paypal?

Any and all input appreciated.

According to the POS, there is no transfer of money or compensation.

But lots of people do it.

I had points transferred several times this year for a family trip. I always paid 100% first either paypal or bank money order before the transfer was made.
