Hopefully someone can help me. My husband and I are thinking about purchasing a DVC timeshare. When you are a DVC member can you add to your points by renting them? Say for instance you purchased 200 points and you needed 250, can you add on by renting from someone? How does that work when you reserve a spot. Would you have to have your points rented first and then add the DVC points or would you use your DVC points and then hope to get more points through renting them. Hopefully someone can help me. Hope this question wasn't too confusing. Thank you.

If you have 200 points and your stay requires 250 points then you may post a request on this board to have someone transfer another 50 points into your account. The conditions would be between you and that DVCer. Then you would be the one making the reservations with all 250 points in your own DVC account. This is what I would reccommend if you are far enough out from the dates you plan to travel. Sometimes if it is down to the wire and you need to add a day or two at the last minute, the only way is to have someone make a reservation for you. I am not very confident on ALL the rules of transfer but we have trandferred into our account before and it was done via the phone and member services. Everything went smoothly.
Of course I would love to purchase about 5000 more DVC points so we could live there for the winter! :)
DVC is the way to go!

You can always borrow from the next year as well. So if you need 250 points and you only have 200, use 50 from your next use year. That will leave you with 150 for the next year. You can also bank your points for a year and use them for the next year.

Borrowing is definitely the way to go. Renting points will cost you $10-12 per point, per year. If you find yourself renting points year-after-year, you'll just wish you had bought more in the first place.

We have done both: borrowed from the upcoming year to supplement points, and rented points from another DVC member (transferred to our account). We have also rented a reservation from another member, when she could not transfer the points we needed for an 11 month ressie. All of them worked fine.

Also remember that if you are not planning to use part or all of your points in a given year, you can also bank them into the subsequent use-year, thereby increasing the number available then.
