Point Borrowing Questions

I'm planning a big vacation next year with extended family (bad idea, I know). ;) The vacation will use up nearly two years' worth of our points.

I'm therefore planning to use all of next year's points, then borrow from my 2012 points to complete the reservation.

Like many people do, I'm planning to make a reservation at my home resort at 11 months out (to make sure that we have a place to stay), then switch to a different resort at 7 months out. However, the other resort reservation actually requires one point less.

So what are my options? It's my understanding that I'll either end up with an unused borrowed point, which will expire at the end of my 2011 Use Year, or an unused current year point, which could be banked into 2012.

When I switch resorts at 7 months, hopefully I can get them to ensure that the leftover point is a current year point instead of a borrowed point, so that I can use it in 2012.

Do I have this correct?

Also, if my family were ever to cancel on me (assuming I'm more than 30 days out), it's my understanding that because borrowing is a final transaction, I must use the borrowed points in my 2011 Use Year, but that (after canceling the big reservation) my 2011 current year's points could be banked into 2012. Do I have this correct?

Am I missing anything? Thanks! :)

It sounds like you have a full understanding of the banking and borrowing to me. MS should be able to save that point for you.
Not sure what accommodations you're booking, but it's good if you book studio's for those you may think might cancel on you...that way your personal accommodations won't be in jeopardy.
We've had as many as 20 people staying with us, and most of the time all worked out fine. One occasion though my wife and i had a 2bedroom unit to ourselves because the other family was unable to make it, and it was too late to make changes. Other times, some have canceled, and we just canceled the studio, with no change in our personal plans. I'm sure you'll find many other scenarios on the boards of family/friends that cancel out. There are more tips and suggestions there as well.
I'm sure you'll have a great time, even given the large group. Just set priorities and let others in the group know before your vacation how you plan on vacationing. Again, there are many threads on that topic as well :thumbsup2

My planned date of stay is August 2011, and I have an April UY.

So you could use banked 2010, current 2011 and borrowed 2012.

If you cancel the reservation more 31 days or more before arrival, you could bank the current year points by November 30, 2011.

Not to hijack the OP, but then, could he rent/transfer points from another owner in 2012 to replenish his points that were borrowed (knowing that they are probably a different home resort, can't be banked, etc.)? I'm thinking about doing nearly the exact same thing.

I would imagine that you can. Remember however that a transfer can only happen once per year...either to or from your account, but not both. Just saying that so you're sure you transfer enough to your account should you need to do that. Buying points for an individual trip from MS is another option if you need 24 or less. I also think transferred points can be banked...but, could someone with more knowledge confirm that?
Hope this helps :thumbsup2
