I hate to tick off a cabbie with a less than $5 fare. Is it OK to walk from the French Quarter to the Old Key West Resort down the street? What would you do?

Disney discourages people walking on those roadways. They do not have sidewalks and traffic moves very very fast. Better to tick off a cabbie with a small fare and tip than be hurt.

I've used that 'back way' with that map...it is a short walk, thru a cm entrance basically....I know disney likes to discourage walking (?!) but it was fine...this was a few years back.....

I would take the boat from POFQ to Downtown Disney. Then you can take another boat from Downtown Disney back to Old Key West. It will require some backtracking, but it is a nice relaxing ride. The boats will run for lunch and dinner, not for breakfast. That is what I was planning on doing to try Olivia's at Old Key West.

Thanks, JimboCh, that is what I needed as well. The entrance to the trail looks overgrown. Is it difficult to spot from the POFQ side?

It is quite overgrown for a reason. They don't want you walking there. That is why the directions say: This route has restricted usage or private roads.

On the google map where you cross over Vacation Club Way, there is construction going on. Anyhow, I think thats where it is and it's on both sides of the road. You may not be able to access it since there are construction fences up. This was two weeks ago.

Yes, there are currently 2 large cranes back there. Probably not a good idea to be walking around there without a hardhat.

Thanks, Joe. I was always told the rule of thump is this: If it is paved walkway, walk on it. Unpaved or without a sidewalk, don't walk on it.

I really wish that Disney would have more walkways. My husband like to run on vacation, and a 1 mile or less trail loop doesn't get it done. I would love more opportunity to get places by walking. I need to burn off all of my disney food!

Agreed. It was a huge mistake not to design the whole Disney World resort complex to be walkable. Not sure why they spread out the parks all over the place. One of the big advantages on Disneyland is there is no need to take buses or drive once you get there. Last time when we stayed offsite at the Candy Cane Inn on Harbor it was an easy 10 minute walk to the front gate at Disneyland or California Adventure. I can get from baggage claim at the Orange County airport to the front gate at Disneyland faster than it takes to get from some of the onsite Disney World hotels to Magic Kingdom. Epic fail.

I think that expecting Disneyworld to be totally "walkable" is a little silly in as much as it is the size of Manahattan. The size of the MK parking lot is the size of Disneyland park. Also, Disneyland is what, two parks? I think the folks planning Disney have a better idea of how it should be laid out for furture development than you or I.

I guess you could run that 1 mile or less trail loop more than once, right? Even the thought of running more than 10 yards exhausts me. I love to walk, but, the ankles don't like running. Most of the resorts have fitness rooms with treadmills, boring, but, useful.

Yeah, he could but he won't! Lol! He tries to not even run out and backs. He has issues with boredom:). I will continue to run the little 1 mile loops or use the treadmill. :(

Lots of people walk and run all over Manhattan. I ran to work from128th to Chelsea more than once and I'm NOT a good runner. That being said, you are right that Disney is going to do what is best for most of its customers. I just wish more of them enjoyed walking and running places as much as me!

Yes, Disney World has been an epic failure. :confused3

Disney does an excellent job on entertainment and rides. I've been to many amusement parks all over the country and Disney blows them all away. By far the best park in the country. The theming of the rides is awesome.

I was just trying to infer with better planning they could have located all of the hotels around the perimeter of the park providing everyone a 10-15 minute walk to a park entrance. There is easily enough space adjacent to the magic kingdom to have 25 to 50 thousand hotel rooms.

Also at the rate they are growing they are going to have serious transportation issues when they add another 50 large hotels and 10 to 15 more parks. Look what they have built in the last 40 years. In the next 50 to 100 years I can hardly imagine how much growth the Disneyworld complex will see.
