Poem memorization for 1st grader

I also vote for Shel Silverstein - - here are my two faves:

Hug O'War

I will not play at tug o'war.
I'd rather play at hug o'war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins.

How Not To Have
To Dry The Dishes

If you have to dry the dishes
(Such an awful, boring chore)
If you have to dry the dishes
('Stead of going to the store)
If you have to dry the dishes
And you drop one on the floor--
Maybe they won't let you
Dry the dishes anymore.

Shel Silverstein is defintely fun and easy for kids to remember...
But one I'll NEVER forget I memorized in 4th grade.....

Once there was an elephant
who tried to use the telephant
No, no I mean the elephone,
who tried to use the telephone.
(Dear me, I'm not certain quite that even now I"ve got it right)

How e'er it was he got his trunk
entangled in the telephunk.
The more he tried to get it free,
the louder buzzed the telephee.
(I fear I'd better drop the song of the elephop and telephong)

[FONT=Times, Times New Roman]I think the time has come to throw
the jack-o'-lantern out,
it smells less like a pumpkin
than it does like sauerkraut.
Its expression is peculiar,
it has lost its friendly grin,
it's tilting sort of strangely,
and its cheeks are caving in.

Its forhead is collapsing,
and its eyes are heading south,
its nose is now connected
to the middle of its mouth.
I admit it's been the focus
of some happy family scenes,
but we've had that Jack-o'-lantern
for eleven Halloweens.

This is one of my dd's favorites!

I found this on the computer last year for my son when he started Kindergarten.

A Little Red Apple

A little red apple
Hung high in a tree.
I looked up at it,
And it looked down at me.
"Come down, Please" I called.
And what do you suppose?
That little red apple
Dropped right on my nose!

My son loved this poem and knew it in no time.
