Hello everyone,
I teach a collegiate course on human communication at Western Illinois University. You may remember me from such activities as, "Kevin Klose helps with speech class dining review assignment." (Troy McClure anyone?)
At this point in the semester, we are in the midst of learning about computer-mediated-communication. Specifically, they are learning about online fan communities. We have been utilizing the DIS as our example of such a community. However, instead of just hearing about this community, I want them to learn by experiencing it. Pete's "special child," I mean...the podcast board, was my first thought in terms of where to turn.
Here's where you (all) come in:
This Friday (April 17th) from 10 - 10:50a EST and 12 - 12:50p EST Pete has arranged to open a special chat room for my class. My hope is that they can come and chat with any members who can make it. I'm not looking for anything fancy, I just want them to step inside an online fan community and see "how it works." They'll all have user names that end in "wiu."
They may ask questions, they may not. Either way - I hope you'll help in sparking interaction. Feel free to use emoticons (is the dancing banana available in chat?) and chat abbreviations, b/c I think that would be important for them to see.
All I ask is that you reply to this thread if you plan on attending, so I know how many to expect.
Thanks in advance and I hope to see you in chat on Friday.
Any questions - please let me know.
- Dave
