I have been told 6 is more standard. I just feel more comfortable being prepared. And yes I know it is an emotional thing for me right now. I think I hear that every time I have a meltdown.

Sort of depends on your job / profession and how long you think it might take you to find a new job.

Not my job to do so, but I worry about people how take expensive vacations, but do not have a savings cushion and are crushed if their car doesn't pass inspection because it needs new tires.

So true, and at this point I have accepted that emotionally this is the right thing to do even if it is overkill.

From what you went through in the last year... this will bring you back your sense of security you loss.

Oh, yeah. Divorce can bring out the best and worse of emotions as you try to protect yourself in so many ways. I have been through it. Now watching my sister go through it. Not fun at all.

I really don't have concerns with job security or job loss and I earn a good salary but I still don't understand the choices people make with their money. I have discovered that I am at heart a fairly frugal person - with one exception - Disney but even there I tend to be more frugal than many. It has been an interesting journey as I have been accussed of being a spendthrift. It has taken me many months to learn that I am actually very cautious with discretionary spending.

I know people who live paycheck to paycheck with no reserve at all for life's emergencies - these are the same people who use every vacation day and sick day they accrue and then wonder what they are going to do when a 'real' emergency comes up.

I never liked the feeling of being dependent on someone else - and avoided Credit Cards. I had to have the money to pay for it or I couldn't do it. I went without for many years until I could afford to do things out of pocket. That is why there was almost a twenty year gap between Disney Trips.

My Vacations were centered around attending conferences - no real "Me" time to unwind.

Seriously, 16 pages and no one posted a posting war... WOW!!!!

Continue on.......

Here in New England we can be frugal and thrifty and it seems a virtue. But to some I may see cheap and miserly because I choose not to spent money in certain places or for certain thongs. Oh, well.

I am very Frugal, too. My choices to spend large amounts of money don't go lightly.

I am Sorry that you are getting put through the "wringer" over making monetary decisions for both your well being and that of your children.

Not surprising the person who struggles the most with my spending habits is my 13 year old. She still believes an activity is not worth anything if you don't spend money. I have started her on a monthly allowance for all of her "wants". When it is gone, it is gone. Hoping she starts thinking more about what is important to spend money on.

I still have not and will not replace her itouch that went into the pool.

Nope, not a posting war. Just friemdly banter.

I feel a little sorry for then new person who popped in, Melody? Must seem a strange place to a new person trying to read all these posts.

Don't give up on us, please, new people! :flower3:

Good for you. She needs to learn how to manage her money now. I would also encourage her to learn to budget her money by saving a percentage and having a percentage to spend on immediate wants/activities.
