Taking time off for me is no problem as I only work a few hours a day in the office of my brother in law's company. He actually shuts down the office mid-December anyway since they can't work anymore (construction) until March.
My husband thankfully has lots of days off each year, 5 or 6 weeks, plus other various individual days. They made their 2010 vacation schedule last December, so no problems there.
I usually have a huge Christmas Eve, Italian style, with the traditional fish dinner with my family and Vinny's family. This year I decided that I won't be having Christmas Eve dinner, I feel bad because my parents enjoy it. This past Christmas Eve, my sister in law decided to drink a little too much, made a complete fool out of herself and decided to pick on my dinner, my house, the temperature of the house, nonsense things. I realize she had too much to drink and probably wasn't aware of what she was saying or doing, but, she never apologized or even acknowledged the incident. If it was just Vinny's family there and she did that, I wouldn't have cared one bit, but, my family was there too, and it was embarassing, to say the least. Needless to say, we weren't happy - after spending a ton of money on the dinner, all the work I had to do, and then have it be ruined, I said enough. It's a big weight off my mind for this year, don't have to have the extra expense and all the work that goes along with it (and the aggrivation).
