Why on earth do we even have school this time of year? My class are coughing their heads off, noses are running like faucets, one is complaining of her ear hurting, several look like they need to just go back to sleep and I feel like someone took a blowtorch to my throat.

I'm right there with you, sister. I just got done cancelling all my lessons for the 3rd day in a row. I know it's a good thing that I have the freedom to cancel if I want to, but on the other hand, when I don't teach, I don't get paid. :sad2:

Oh well, one more day of laying around watching tv for me. I really need to get better, because hubby and I are set to be guest worship leaders this weekend at a church that we're hoping is going to start supporting our mission work. I need to make sure I have a voice by Sunday. I haven't lost it yet - right now, it's still hanging on by a thread.

:wave2:

I haven't read back anything other than this page, but it looks like a lot of  are needed. Sorry you guys are feeling crappy.

I'm going to read back a bit and catch up. :)

Oh, and I found out why DD7 was crying and having nightmares last night. She is completely stressed about this Native Americans Test today. She is in 2nd grade! Why is the school putting so much pressure on them? They sent a study guide home and it has a TON of information on it. I think it is way too much for 2nd grade. I keep telling her not to worry and do her best and even if she gets them all wrong we will still love her.

This is just what DD7 is on too, Native America and she too has a study guide and is having a test early next week. She knows it all though already. I don't know if they just work so much on this stuff in school or what, but she has no issues with any of it it seems. Her big issue is her handwriting, it is really bad.

What are your DD's spelling words Scrappy?

Mine had multi-terraced this week!

Happy Friday back at ya!

Pagie

It's all good. Least it isn't like it was 200 years ago. People didn't know if they'd make it through winter alive. Between rampant illness in the cities spread by parasites, starvation in the country, and being lost in blizzards or frozen no matter where you lived..........hey, I've got nothing to complain about. :thumbsup2

We are studying famous Americans.......Thurgood Marshall, Benjamin Banneker, Susan B. Anthony, et al. Then Christmas around the world......which I already had a run in with another teacher about and vented to Tig about.

Finished with telling time, going into place value with ones, tens and hundreds. We've done nouns and punctuation and are in the middle of verbs.

Let's see, what else.........oh science. Finished the night sky and outer space things. We're doing weather. Especially severe weather. Lovely to talk to young children about.

Spelling list was er endings: letter, never, father, other.......and so on. I don't remember what next week's is.

Do you pick what you are going to teach Paige, or is it given to you? I know at DDs school, not all 2nd grade classes are doing the same thing. There are so many sets of twins, triplets or quads there. The quads are in the same class, which at first I didn't understand, but then someone said, in the early years, they mother couldn't possibly keep up with the different work, spelling lists, homework, etc...so she insists they are in the same class now.

Anyway, I know with the sets of twins, that are in different classes, that they have completely different work.

dd7 had OU words this week. poured, course, resource, etc. Usually a themeed list of 10, then with 7 more thrown in. 2 are always from the week prior, 3 are whatever and 2 are about what they are studying, which has been Native American in the last few weeks. Multi-terraced being one of them.

We are regulated district wide by six weeks in all main subjects what to teach. So that all 2nd graders will learn the same things in math, science, social studies, grammar, spelling, writing and reading. The same stories are done each week across the district in reading, but the choice of when to cover what skill is up to the teacher. Similarly, the same spelling and phonics must be covered within that six weeks, but the spelling lists and when each is covered is up to the teacher. Math is now more regulated, in that we are all supposed to be doing the same activities in the same six weeks. Social Studies and Science is now on a daily format, all teachers are doing the same daily activities across the district. Writing and grammar are still open enough that we may choose how to cover our topics per six weeks.

In our school, however, our principal wants one set of plans for the grade level, so that when we do have choices, we must all agree on what is to be done and all do it that way. So, all our spelling lists are the same.

I like the consistency across the district in what skills are covered and what stories are read. I don't like being regulated to not being able to stretch my skills. It works very well for teachers who do the "read the book and answer the questions" type things, because they make you do more. But for teachers like me who like to hit a lot of modalities, it is restrictive. I must do this on this day, despite what the children would like to do, despite what occurs to me would be something we could do, despite a teachable moment that just cropped up........we simply can not go outside in one of the few snowfalls of the year here in texas and catch snowflakes on black construction paper and study them because we are supposed to be making construction paper habitats today. You see?

a what :confused3
Teo you make me smile as well ;)

Translation: Philadelphia Eagles Replica Football Jersey with Westbrook's (a player on the Philadelphia Eagles) name and number. ;) :)

Darn Paigey beat me.

Good late morning! I was in bed asleep by 9:00 last night. I woke up to tell the girls good night at 9:30 and then went right back to sleep. Woke up this morning, felt "ehhh", went back to sleep and not to work.

you got it Paige! I will be out tomorrow.

Morning all. Late start today.
