"plunder" to bring home for class

The teacher said (of course he did tell me not to feel obligated but I truely would love to do it) it would be great if we could find some trinkets that could be considered "plunder" to be put to use in the class. Anyone have any suggestions? I will probably only be able to shop in St. Thomas and Castaway Cay (as well as the ship) since we are off to Anguilla for the day in St. Marten.

Here's a different kind of idea.....

When my DS was on the cruise and they had the treasure hunt on CC, their "plunder" was pretend gems -- like the kind you would glue onto a craft project, flat on one side in various shapes and colors. He worked had for those two gems! We ended up gluing them onto some clocks hands (one for the minute and one for the hour) for our beach-themed bathroom. Anyway, you could go to the store and get a bag of those gems and then put them in a ziplock (or a drawstring bag, whatever) and then on the last night when they have the big final goodbyes have someone take your picture with the gems and Captain Hook (I'm sure he would think of a good pose trying to get the gems for himself). After you get back, you can show the picture and tell the kiddos that you stole Captain Hooks treasure and you are willing to share!

That is a great idea!! Even if I pick some gems up here first and get some other trinkets there, I bet the gems are a lot more in the caribbean.. oh I know it is cheating some but....if I still get some other stuff from the islands that is not soo bad..right?

I doubt you'll find any other trinkets -- we've looked!
Another idea is to hoard those chocolate mints they leave in your room. They could look like treasure too!

My son wanted to bring back something for each person in his class. We bought a twenty four pack of colors on the ship in the gift shop. Each crayon was a different color and the end of the crayon had a disney character head, that was actually a part of the crayon. If i remember right it cost 10 bucks for the set, and since there was 22 in his class, this worked out really well! This has been a year and a half or so ago, so I am not sure if they still carry this item or not, but it worked out great.

I love this guy ethics mean everything to him.. so back to the original question.. what would make good plunder, gems I can get in mickey's mates, maybe I could pick up a treasure chest in st. thomas... what else?

sand off the beach area (that you can purchase, of course) , those dead frozen-state seahorses, anything that might be advertised that was left for or by pirates... shells, crabs,

Ann, I thought immediately about the chocolate gold coins -- do you think there is a Dollar Store in port? I was in the Dollar Store in our town a week ago buying for my little store at the high school and noticed the coins - They were a good deal.

I would be ordering from Oriental Trader -- mardi gras necklaces, etc.

You could put together an awesome treasure chest - TJ Maxx has great small chests that you could either paint or distress, and you could fill them with all kinds of stuff - DS could qualify those items -- "these are examples of what one might have found....", and then go on to the "plunder" that was native to the area -

We lived in New Orleans for almost 3 years and I have 2 LARGE rubbermaid totes filled with beads. I have several closed up bags of the white pearl Mardi Gras beads that I would be more than happy to: 1) bring on the ship for Ann, and 2) send to Grumpy's mom. I have given out beads every year to the kids classmates on Mardi Gras, and still have loads left! I would love for them to be put to good use. Just let me know!!!

Over the past few years we've brought home for schoolmates, friends, etc...shell necklaces, flower leis, morroccas (teacher loved me for these-well,maybe not!), mickey straws, chocolate coins (which can be found on the ship), and post cards.

While in the islands is it easy to get bags of sea shells. Kids love these. You could even purchase them ahead of time at a craft store and 'hide' them in some shallow water for your child to find. He could then share his treasure with his class when he gets home.

I would LOVE some of your beads, if I actually got them ON THE CRUISE it would get past DH's ethical thing.. (he is a great man but ever so honest) we are in cabin 6596 so if you bring some beads on board feel free to stop by with them they would help fill the "plunder chest"..btw I would like to meet you so give us a call when you arrive (just punch in cabin 6596 ) regardless if you have any beads or not

If you are on an eastern cruise, visit the "solar" store, the stuff that changes color in the sun. They have the little rings that change color. They are SUPER cheap.

Well, I just have to say that the indication that my original idea was unethical bothered me quite a bit. I contemplated whether or not to reply about it. As you can see from my post, it is 5 AM so I just need to say my mind so I can get some sleep....

The idea was to get the gems before and then have your picture taken with Capt. Hook trying to get the treasure. Then you can pass out "Capt. Hooks's treasure for the kids" after showing them the picture. TRUTH - Captain Hook wanted THAT treasure and it WAS on the boat. I did NOT imply that you should say, "Kiddies, here is some treasure I got in the Carribean" when you actually purchased it from Hobby Lobby. Instead, "Here is the treasure that Captain Hook wanted, see here is Miss Ann on the ship running away with the treasure and Captain Hook is chasing her! Aren't you glad I got away?"

Look, I assumed these children were preschoolers. Imagination and creativity is what good teaching is all about. The line about "dh says this is unethical" is a load of crap. Let me see....do you talk like Santa is real?????? How does that jive with dh's ethics?

Last, I have over 150 posts on this board and have NEVER posted anything negative. I love Ann's posts and read them always with the utmost respect. I hope you all will forgive me but I just had to get this off my chest. I also work with young children (as a speech therapist) and my ethics are important to me as well.

Now, I can finally get to bed.

When I was mentioning ethics I meant that my husband just sees things as either black or white, ( I see most things in gray )
This is for my son's fifth grade class who is studying pirates not for my preschoolers. I did not in the very least mean that you were suggesting something unethical but that I was (when I thought I would get some gems at our local craft store) I personally LOVE your idea, please don't think I was saying anything negative about you!
