One of the girls at work is a Jehovah Witness.
I don't want to offend her in any way....but I really know nothing about it.

Do they not celebrate anything? Even birthdays, New Years? (things not necessarily related to one type of religion)

I hope you get more responses than this one, because I really don't know a whole lot about it, but we have a guy at work who doesn't even attend the company picnic, pizza luncheons or ice cream social.

I would really like to be more informed as well.

Denae

No celebrating of anything at all. Not religious holidays, birthdays, or otherwise.

They celebrate things like weddings and babies. They do'nt celebrate birthays. The JW's I know celebrate secular Holidays such as July 4th and Labor Day as well. They do'nt celebrate Christmas--I think New Years is OK, can't recall.

Most JW's do'nt socialize much with non-JW's.

Don't be offended by their choice to not participate.

Anne

As a teacher, I often have a Jehovah's Witness student. I always feel badly when they can't participate in anything that we do.

No, they don't celebrate anything. Only the anniversary of Christ's death in the spring.

I was raised as one, but left the religion fairly recently for personal reasons.

why don't they celebrate anything? what is the significance of it?

They don't celebrate anything because they are a cult, a false religion trying to spread their version of heresy.

No, that's actually not why, but thank you for your input.

According to pamphlets I have been given by parents of my JW students, celebrating is putting other "things"/ideas ahead of God. I think that is the basic idea, but if I'm wrong, somebody please correct me. As a teacher it is very difficult to have all students excited about projects/activities and then have one child not able to participate. Most of the time they can't even go to our assemblies.

Harsh, doncha think? Nothing like a little religious tolerance, huh?

Their beliefs come from their interpretation of events in the Bible. I'm not one, but I have a very close friend who is.

I don't understand....it's OK to celebrate the birth of a new baby ~ but not your own birthday every year?

Years ago a friend who was a former JW told me that birthdays are considered a celebration of the self and therefore forbidden. I got the distinct impression she didn't want to talk about it so I didn't press the issue any further.

I don't attend that stuff at my company either...not because I'm a JW...just because I really don't like to socialize with most of the people I work with.

and, really, it's all centered around "food" and that bothers me.

To help answer the OP's question, here are a few very brief reasons why Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate "holidays", including the scriptures in the Bible where the info is located:

Christmas and Easter: Jesus was not born on December 25. He was born about October 1, a time of year when shepherds kept their flocks out-of-doors at night. (Luke 2:8-12) Jesus never commanded Christians to celebrate his birth. Rather, he told his disciples to memorialize, or remember, his death. (Luke 22:19,*20) Christmas and its customs*come from ancient false religions. The same is true of Easter customs, such as the use of eggs and rabbits. The early Christians did not celebrate Christmas or Easter, nor do true Christians today.

Birthdays: The only two birthday celebrations spoken of in the Bible were held by persons who did not worship Jehovah God. (Genesis 40:20-22; Mark 6:21, 22, 24-27) The early Christians did not celebrate birthdays. The custom of celebrating birthdays comes from ancient false religions. True Christians give gifts and have good times together at other times during the year.

Your absolent intolerence of other religions are the same type of religious views as practiced by the extremists in the Middle East that blow up children.

And your tolerance of Christians is the same as the Romans that would lead the Christians to the arena to be killed for sport.

You beat me to it, Anne. I was about to tell 2funny2c that a lot of religions in the world say the EXACT same thing about Christians!
