As shared by Red Skelton, one of the great American comedians of the past.......

"Getting back to school, getting back to school, I remember a teacher that I had. Now I only wee, I went, I went through the seventh grade, I went through the seventh grade. I left home when I was 10 years old because I was hungry. And .. this is true. I worked in the Summer and went to school in the Winter. But, I had this one teacher, he was the principal of the Harrison school, in Vincennes Indiana. To me, this was the greatest teacher, a real sage of .. of my time, anyhow.

He had such wisdom. And we were all reciting the Pledge of Allegiance one day, and he walked over. This little old teacher ... Mr. Lasswell was his name. ... Mr. Lasswell was his ah ...

(at this point Red is making faces and playing with his hat!)

He says: ...

"I've been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge of Allegiance .. all semester ... and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you.

If I may, may I recite it and try to explain to you the meaning of each word.

I me, an individual, a committee of one.

Pledge dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance my love and my devotion.

To the Flag our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.

United that means that we have all come together.

States individual communities that have united into 48 great states. 48 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country.

And to the Republic Republic, a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

For Which It Stands

One Nation One nation, meaning, so blessed by God.

Indivisible incapable of being divided.

With Liberty which is freedom, the right of power to live one's own life without threats or fear or some sort of retaliation.

And Justice the principle or qualities of dealing fairly with others.

For All For all... which means boys and girls, it's as much your country, as it is mine."

And now boys and girls let me hear you recite, the Pledge of Allegiance.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance - "under God".

Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said, "That is a prayer" and that would be eliminated from schools, too?

Some good thoughts to remember and recall in the months ahead as we go about that quad annual process we have here in America, the selection of the President, whomever he/she will be. We, here in America, are ALL Americans, corny sounding at times, but it works pretty well.....

I'd never heard this before.

Thanks for the post.

That's played on our stations quite a bit here...great!! Red Skelton! I remember being a little kid and watching his show with my Dad. :cloud9:

:sad1: Your posts have a way of choking me up. I really enjoyed hearing it. Thank you.

Dan, thank you so much for this post! I am making my kids listen to this. It is so sad that prayer has already been taken out of our schools and that there are many people out there who want the pledge out also because of two simple words - under God!

I remember my first grader teacher explaining to our class what the pledge of allegiance meant! It gave me goosebumps then and I still get goosebumps today when I hear the pledge and our great national anthem.

I hope parents pass on allegiance to their children what our parents passed on to us. We live in a great and wonderful country!

Freedom!!!!! Isn't that a wonderful word and feeling!!

OK! I am hushing now!!!!!!!!!!!!!:wave2:

Thanks for posting this! I've heard it before, but it does me good to hear it again!

Thanks for posting this Dan. :D I've been in my kids school in the morning when the kids are reciting this. What he says is so true.............the kids just 'say' it, they don't truly hear the words and understand it. :worried:

I pray that the words to the Pledge of Alligance, as we know it, are NEVER changed! :bounce:

Great post Dan! Made me teary at work. :)

Side thought I can't keep quiet :
it's kind of a shame we now have to "warn" people that something is patriotic *sigh*

Wow, great post Dan. I think that all teachers should take a few minutes and recite this to their class. Let the kids know what the pledge means and stands for, not just sometime to rattle off each morning.

::yes::

I too, remember this clip. I've always loved Red Skelton -- in fact, I am old enough to remember "The Red Skelton Show" on TV, way back when.

His words are indeed timeless, and as appropriate now as when he first recited them, 35 years ago . . .

I agree, but have learned some do not like this here, thought a warning would be good so those do not have to look and get all upset.

It is a wonderful pledge, a wonderful country.

My kids even know who Red Skeleton is! Surely you can't expect any of us to believe you. :earseek:

Again, if nothing more than to give a deserving post a bump...................thanks again for posting this Dan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:jumping2:

Thanks Dan for this post. I used to watch the Red Skelton show all the time. At the time that this episode aired I had about 60 days left of my 3 years of active duty with the US Army in Europe. As a result I had never seen or even heard of this episode. I also would like to remind everyone that there is nothing in this world more powerful then
