I have a 3 day reservation for October. I have a June use year. When I made a reservation in May for October, MS said they were borrowing points from 2010 to make the reservation.

Whenever I make my reservation they will always be borrowing. June use year, travel in Sept/Oct/Nov. If at 7 months I want to change resorts I could very easily find myself with extra points that I cannot bank, correct?

If I'm understanding your situation correctly, you have a June use year. So your 2010 points will be available to you to make reservations between June of 2010 and the end of May 2011. So no borrowing is necessary in the case of making a reservation for October of 2010.

You don't need to actually have the points in your account at the time you make the reservation. In your case, you want to make a reservation for October 2010, but your points aren't in your account until June of 2010. This isn't considered borrowing. An example of borrowing would be if you didn't have enough points in your 2010 account to complete your reservation, then you could borrow points from your 2011 account.

Hope that helps a little.

It sounds like you are NOT borrowing. If you have a June UY and are using 2010 points for an October 2010 reservation, they are using points from your June 1 2010 allotment of points. Your June 1 2010 points are good for stays June 1 2010 thru May 31 2011. It doesn't matter when you made the reservation.

That is what I thought. But the MS woman I spoke to said I was borrowing 2010 points to make my reservation for my Oct 2010 trip. (I get my 2010 points in June 2010) She said because they are borrowed, if I have to cancel my Oct trip I cannot bank those points, but would have to use them by May 2011.

This all came up because I asked about reserving a second studio for my mother that I might have to cancel. (I know about the 31 days ahead of time) She said be careful because if I cancel one of the studio's that the points are all borrowed and I could not bank them. :confused3 She said wait until next week (June) to reserve the studio so I would not have to borrow the points.

I bought resale this spring. I double checked my points on the DVC member site and I have 150 coming June 2010, with 75 assigned to my Oct reservation and 75 available to use/bank/borrow. I have 150 coming in 2011, 150 in 2012 etc. Just as things should be. As for that second studio I would not need any more then 50 points so it's not like I would be borrowing from 2011.

Positive. Plus she said wait until next week so I would not have to borrow. If we were talking about 2011 points, I would still be borrowing them next week.

RUN, do not walk to you phone and call MS back NOW and make sure the misinformed MS person you spoke with before hasn't messed up your account! If you find that has happened, ask to speak to a supervisor and get it corrected.

Was her name Evelyn? I called this morning and spoke to a MS who was so confused. She couldn't load her computer, she had to log out multiple times, and finally when she pulled up my account to book, she didn't realize that my points weren't loaded yet (closed on resale last week) and told me I had to borrow points from 2011 to make a Dec 2010 ressie (also have June UY). Thank goodness I read Disboards. I told her thank you very much and hung up the phone and called a second MS who told me to wait a day to get my 2010 points loaded. (I don't even think my 2011 are available--boy that lady was confused).

Points used are always based on the use year of the dates of stay, not when the reservation is made. You never have to wait for your use year to start to make a reservation or borrow points. Sounds like she didn't know what she was talking about.

Exactly.
