please try to keep your germs to yourself!

We don't use antibacterial soap in this house for two reasons:
1.) the good bacteria that exists on your hands
2.) it is bad for your septic system because it kills the good bacteria in there munching away
I heard that friction is what kill the germs on your hands so when you wash you are supposed to rub your hands for as long as it takes to sing "Happy Birthday"

Friction, unless you get your hands REALLY hot, won't kill germs. Washing your hands doesn't really kill germs either, it rinses them OFF your hands which is why soap is important, plain water doesn't get slippery enough to wash those babies down the drain. Now, antibacterial soap will kill them.

You are usually most contagious before symptoms show up so people can be as diligent at they want when sick but if you don't know you are sick there isn't much you can do. Yes, normal proper hygiene is a good idea, as is sneezing into your arm not your hands but you are still going to get sick.

It's just a cold.
See if that line works when you are trying to board a Disney Cruise ship. How would you feel if you weren't allowed to board because you were visibly sick? Conversely, how would you feel if you gave someone your cold and they couldn't take their vacation?

I would say the chances of someone missing a vacation because of a common cold are very slim indeed.

I agree with the OP, too many people are inconsiderate. They go out shopping when they or their kids are sick, don't bother to cover a sneeze or cough. I work in retail and have low immunity. I just wish people would show common courtesy to others. Don't bring your kids out shopping when they don't feel good. It isn't fair to them or me. I am not talking about a run to the grocery store because you need medicine or milk. I am talking about the people who spend an hour in a store just browsing. When I worked in a baby store we had a customer come in with her child covered in Chicken Pox, and not scabbed over. She didn't need anything -I can't remember what she bought but I know it was not a necessity, meanwhile her child looked awful. :confused3 If they are too sick to go to school, they are too sick to shop! Sorry if I am ranting a bit, it is a sore subject for me because I see it so often. I think it is the antibacterial soap that makes gerrms resistant.

A cold doesn't warrant missing a day of school so that theory of "being too sick for school means too sick to shop" is kind of thrown out. An illness with a fever or a rash would warrant missing a day of school though. Life doesn't stop when someone has a common cold. If it did, businesses would close, etc. Honestly, if you have such a low immune system, I'm not sure why you would choose to work in retail handling all that dirty money, etc.

Agreed, though friction is needed to make sure the germs bind to the soap and get washed off properly. If you simply spread the soap gently onto your hands and then stick them under the running water that won't be enough. You need to vigorously rub your hands together while soapy and while under running water to get the best results. Honestly, most people don't wash well enough, me included.

I agree with your second paragraph too - you will never, ever be able to completely avoid viruses, because they are living in too many people who don't even know they are there yet! Hygiene helps (sick or not), but there are no guarantees.

These days I find that santizer just isn't enough so I've taken to carrying bleach around with me...

Seriously though, hands over your mouth with you cough/sneeze etc. is just good manners but nothing in the world will stop you getting a cold occasionally. Indeed, if you keep sanitizing everything, you don't build up any immunity to it.

No one likes getting sick but it's a fact of life. If a head cold is the biggest worry in your life right now, you are one lucky lady.

True! A cold has never slowed me down yet!

Then again, my mom has a slight auto-immune issue, and any virus at all causes her body to go into full attack mode, attacking her own tissue! She feels worse from the immune response than from the cold symptoms! So we try hard not to give her anything, but of course there's no way to prevent everything.

Today, as the cashier at drugstore was handing me my change she was coughing without any attempt to cover her mouth. Lovely.

From the Disney Cruise Terms & Conditions:

Refusal of Passage
Disney Cruise Line may refuse to transport or may disembark at any port any Guest who may be suffering from a contagious or infectious disease, ill health or whose presence in the opinion of the Master may be detrimental to the comfort or safety of other Guests or the crew, or who, in the Master's opinion, might be excluded from landing at destination by Immigration or other governmental authorities. In such cases the Guest shall not be entitled to any refund of fare or compensation whatsoever.

Maybe you can hide your symptoms, but maybe the person you gave your cold to can't.

Do you have any documented statistics that you can link us to that show just how many people have been denied boarding due to a common cold?

I agree with the poster who stated we are over sanitizing ourselves. Build up some immunity people!

I do consider myself to be one lucky lady for which I am very thankful.

I'm sorry if I sounded like I was complaining because I had a cold. That was not my intended point. My intended point was that many people seem to be either ignorant or inconsiderate when it comes to good hygiene and germ control.

btw - Judging from the timing, I suspect I caught this cold while on vacation at Disney World. I think I brought home one too many souvenirs!

Sure, I carry them on a laminated card in my wallet; don't you?

My point was just that even if you don't feel that having a cold is a big deal, you should consider that not everyone feels the same way and that there are actually potential consequences of sharing your germs.

Bottom Line: Be considerate and do what you can to NOT spread your germs.

Well you are the one that posted about being denied boarding on cruises because of being ill.

It's a cold for Pete's Sake. If your life is ruined over a cold, you should never leave your house.

I agree with you 100%, but I don't think that was ever the point of this thread.

I've made my point; I'm not going to argue.

Since this has come up several times, I thought I would share.

The following information can be found in detail at the Center for Disease Control website at www.cdc.gov and at www.drgreene.com. The key points are:

1. Using regular soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizers such as Purell does not cause anti-bacterial resistance. In fact, it improves the proportion of "good" germs on the hands. Some scientists are concerned that the ingredients in anti-bacterial soap, though, may cause resistance.

2. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not the same as anti-bacterial soap.
The CDC recommends the use of hand sanitizers in hospitals, at home, at work, and in schools to stop the spread of germs.

3. Washing with regular soap and water is effective if done frequently and properly. Hand sanitizers kill 99.99% of most common germs that cause illness in less than 15 seconds and without water, making them more convenient to use and therefore increasing good hand hygiene.
