you would. Get a medicine from doctor for DS5 with Autism for the flight there and back?

I am so on the fence about this. Some days I want to then other days I think we will just have to do what we do to calm him and keep him focused and not upset.
I have posted many times about him and flying and I am just not sure. I will take all his favorite things and snacks(if allowed now)and cd player with music to calm him. But I am still having this nightmare of him having a meltdown and them asking to land the plane because he is an unruly (sp?) passenger. I know I am probably thinking way too much into this but.. I gues that is what I do.

My dd7 has meltdowns for other reasons, and we have had a couple of times on planes where my dh and I thought we wouldn't make it all the way to our destination. I think getting a stand-by medication is a good idea. I don't know what the options are, but if you had something "just in case" then I'm sure your anxiety would decrease, which will in turn decrease any anxiety that your ds is having. And if you have it you probably won't need it - that's the way it goes. Best wishes!

Our local ped suggest we give our DS a healty dose of Benadryl before we take off. He said it wont' hurt DS and it would make DS more happy and everyone around us. So we did it. DS was groggy but not out of it, he slept in my arms and woke up when we arrived. His ears were great and it helped with the air quality change in Florida.

I plan on doing it again in 20 days.

Unless your son had been on that medication in the past I would be afraid of any unanticipated side effects. Maybe a dose of Benadral. It never worked for my son when I gave it to him, but while hospitalized they would give him a dose and it did seem to relax him. Ask the dr for the correct dose.

I'd suggest that if you do get something, you try it before going on your trip.
Trapped in a plane is not a good time to find out that the medication that is supposed to have a calming effect has the opposite effect on your child.

I'd try the benadryl before your trip.

As teh previous poster mentioned. Some people don't wind down, and calm down w/ bendryl, some get more excited and amped up.

Good Luck,

Connie

yeah we found that out the hard way. Our ped suggested giving our then 9 mo a little benadryl to keep him calm during the flight to NJ. Not so much with the calm. His eyes FLEW open and he was squirmy and whiny and just not having it. However, our then 2 yr old just zonked out.
So if you can try whatever med you decide to take with you BEFORE you get on the plane.

I will surely try it out before I get on the plane- I didnt even think about that. I did think that if the ped gave a rx for something that it might make his grumpy when it wore off. But never thought about the "side effects". He has been put to sleep before for a mouth full of dental work and he was in such a bad mood until he could be independent again.

See why I love the Dis.

Thank you all
:thanks: :disrocks:

Benadryl?
Do you think the fastmelt tablets work the same as the liquid. Which should I try? He hates taking meds of any sort. It is always a fight.

I'm weighing in again. Benadryl is a good idea. Make sure you buy the appropriate dose; they come in 12.5 and 25 mg. (Read the back and you'll know which to buy.) You know best which he will take - the fastmelt might be great for him. Doing a trial before you go is a very good idea. When you're planning it, consider that you might get the opposite effect...which means you MIGHT be up all night instead of him getting a good night's sleep. For this reason, you may want to give it to him earlier in the day sometime when you don't have anything planned. That way if it makes him tired he just chills out that afternoon, but if it winds him up he'll still sleep well once it wears off. Also, pay attention to what time you give the med and what time it starts to have its effect, so you'll be able to time it out perfectly for your flight. (BTW, I don't think its a bad idea to run this by your dr., just to keep him/her in the loop.) We are in the middle of major medication trials to figure out what is keeping our dd up at night, so I'm living this out in a big way right now. Lots of happy pixie dust to you!!! pixiedust:

Yes we have found that while drinking chocolate milk DS is super relaxed and chilled out "in his world" but aprox. 45 minutes later - Crazy excited and giggles and the whole 9. We were letting him have a small cup of chocolate milk with dinner/ or shortly after. Well... after about 5 nights in a row of not going to bed until 2am we stopped that and everything has been so much better. No he ONLY gets Chocolate in his milk in the AM. So he has all day to let it wear off.

So I totally feel your pain! katymae

Last night, when we were still not asleep at 2:15am (with a spelling test first thing in the morning!) I was recalling those days of being up when she was a baby. Let's face it, I like to sleep! And once she started sleeping through the night I never looked back...until now! We are in month 4 of working this particular nuance of her adhd treatment. :scared1:

Sometimes its just nice to know that you're not the only one in the world dealing with this stuff. ;)

Yes I have to say DS has done the Benadryl routine. Doctor has said many times it is ok to use in this type of instance. DS also spent some time in a hospital for severe maladaptive behavorial problems and that is what they used, although the dose they gave him I would not at home it was more like the adult dose. Check with your doctor first and if he says yes remember you can have liquid or pills if liquids are still banned on planes. Good luck.
