Hi everyone. I consider myself an expert at planning our WDW vacations but it has been so long since we have been to DL that I am completely out of the loop on planning a trip there. We haven't even been since CA has been open.

I would really appreciate all the info you can give me to help make this trip in July a great trip. Info on whether it is important to visit certain lands first, is it as important to hit Fantasy Land first if we are doing it as it is at WDW? Should we be at the park for opening? What about places to eat and is it to late to make ADR's? How about character meals? Are there any special tips, shortcuts, etc. I need to know about? Anything else you can think of?

Thanks so much for the help. I wish I had time to read through months worth of posts to learn it all myself but that just isn't an option.

Thanks again,
Lori

You'll want to plan to be at the gates before opening. I would say, for July, about 1/2 hour early. Depending on the day of the week and scheduled opening time, they often let people in 1/2 hour or so early. Then they have a rope across the end of main street. The rope will drop at the scheduled opening time. I believe that is usually done when the park opens at 9 or later. Plan to take a break mid day when its hot and crowded. Its a good time to do your shopping (do NOT wait until night time to shop, the stores are packed), take a break at the hotel or visit DCA.

Early entry (EE) is offered on most Mon, Tues, Thurs and Saturdays. Its one hour before the park opens. Fantasyland and most of tomorrow land are open. Most 3 day or more park hoppers offer a day of EE. If you are staying onsite you can use EE each day it is offered.

You will want to visit fantasy land early in the morning or late at night. Mid day the lines will be way to long to bother with. Peter Pan and Dumbo are probably the rides you should do first. Your first fast pass of the day should either be star tours or (since you are going in July) splash mt. Start getting FP early in the day- as soon as the park opens. Watch the time at the bottom that says when you can get the next one. get on each time you can- dont delay! They will enforce the begining return time, but not the ending time. So, you can return hours after the end time and still use it. In DCA you'll want your first fast pass to be for Soarin. Roger Rabbit and Grizzly river are not connected to the other fast pass machines so you can get them anytime. And the two parks are not networked to each other.

Yes, you should make PS (the call it priority seating at DL). Its not to late for most places. Might be to late for Ariels princess meal, but even that would be worth checking on if you are interested. Most PS does not fill up as quickly as it does in WDW.

I'm sure I"ll think of more later. Have a great trip!

Be sure to DEFINITELY get there right when the park opens. If you want to ride the newly renovated Space Mountain, run STRAIGHT to it as soon as you get in the park becuase in MY opinion, it is NOT worth a two or three hour wait. I was lucky I got on it right away when I last went, but if I hadn't been aware of the renovation, I wouldn't of noticed anything different. Have fun on your trip! :sunny:

I think advice on what to do first depends a lot on your group. For some groups Dis1084's advice may work best. I would argue that as a guideline - not a hard and fast rule - the above advice really is not best for most groups. (Sorry Dis1084, nothing personal here, just giving an alternate opinion :) ) Why is that? Since Space Mtn (SM) was given as an example lets work with that. SM is a FastPass (FP) ride. That means that as long as you take a few minutes to pick up a SM FP you can ride it any time of day with a short line. However, there are a number of DL rides that do not have FP and also build up long lines - maybe not quite as long as SM but still close to an hour. I would argue that these are the rides you should do first thing.

Examples include:

Jungle Cruise
Star Tours
Matterhorn and most all of the FantasyLand rides (except for Small World which has a very hide ride capacity and the wait time builds much more slowly)
All ToonTown rides/character meets (except for Roger Rabbit which has FP)
POTC (usually you do not need to do this early, but for the next year after it's re-opening it will be longer than usual)

The above is just a guideline. When we go to DLR, it is very hard to convince my kids to put off all the FP rides until later in the day so we usually end up doing some in the early morning. However, we never do this when it means we will have to wait a long time for something else.

You think the the line for POTC will be longer than usual for a year?! Oy... I was hoping it would be for just a month or two until the locals get over the newness of it. (Does that happen?) :confused3 :lmao:

I was hoping the same thing, but it's doubtful. Look at Space Mountain...more popular than ever! And it's been open a while.

Lori:

I am a DLR veteran and just got back from my first WDW trip this past week. I did a lot of research on WDW and noticed some things that are different between DLR and WDW. I am going to write up a lengthy guide to DLR for WDW vets in the next few days and post it here, and you may want to keep an eye out for it. Here is a summary of some key differences:

1. Transportation - Wow, this was such a big issue at WDW - buses, boats, monorails, taxis. Or if you have your own car, parking, finding your way around on the roads, trams, etc. And lots of waiting for transportation.

Anyone who goes to DLR and does not stay at a close by hotel is making a huge mistake, IMO. Even the DLH and DLPP hotels are farther than you would think. The GCH is right there at the DCA and DL entrance. There are also a number of "good neighbor" hotels right there on Harbor across the street from DLR, and are much closer to the DLR gates than the DLH or DLPP. You can literally walk 1-2 minutes and be on Disney property.

What this means is that, if you are staying close enough, you can walk everywhere. We park our car at our hotel and never get on a bus, tram, car or any mode of transportation - other than our feet - for the whole trip. Want to take an afternoon break? At WDW this is often 45 minutes each way. At DLR it can be as little as 5 minutes.

2. Park Hopping - Want to park hop at WDW? Well, you may need to commit as much as one hour to get from one park to another. At DLR, it is a one minute walk from DL to DCA. And DTD is right there as well. What this means is that it is very practical to hop back and forth all day long. We typically hop every single day, and often more than once.

3. Weather - Obviously depends on what time of year you go. In July at DLR you can be 99% certain that you will not get rained on. In July at WDW, you can be 99% certain you will. Plus no humidity in CA. So 90 degrees feels pretty comfortable. It can get hotter - I have been to DL when it is 100 degrees - but it still was not as much of an issue as 90+ degrees at WDW in the summer.

4. Food - WDW beats DLR hands down on quantity and quality of restaurants. Eating out three meals a day can be time consuming, and for us personally we never eat out for breakfast. The only ADR (I think it is still called PS - Priority Seating - at DLR) we made last summer over a four day trip was at the Blue Bayou.

In short, the whole issue of making ADR's which seems to consume so many WDW visitors is just not much of an issue at DLR.

5. Special Dining Packages/ Character Meals

I may be wrong, but I think DLR sells these mostly to WDW vets who think they are necessary in order to get good seats or magical character meetings. We have never done anything like this and have always had a magical experience. Getting good seats for parades and Fantasmic takes a little research, but buying a special package is not even close to being worth it, IMO. Put another way, the money you spend on such things could be better spent at DLR in other ways.

6. Early Entry - at WDW there is no consensus on whether this is a good thing or not (we avoided all "Extra Magic Hour" parks at WDW even though we were on property, as the parks are less crowded on non-EMH days). However, at DLR using Early Entry (EE) is a no-brainer. It is important that you do Early Entry (EE) and do it right.

EE is typically on Mon/Tue/Thurs/Sat. Here is some advice on EE:

A. If you stay at a DLR hotel you can use EE for each day it is available. This is still, to my understanding, an unpromoted perk.

B. If you stay elsewhere and have a 3+ day ticket, you can use EE on one day

C. If you use EE, you should focus like a laser on FantasyLand

D. If you do not use EE, but it is an EE day at DL for others, that is a particularly good day to start at DCA. If you decide to go to DL on such a day, avoid FantasyLand like the plague until late in the evening at least.

E. If it is non-EE day for everyone (Wed/Fri/Sun) then that is a good day to start at DL FantasyLand or anywhere in DL for that matter.

7. FastPass - DLR has some idiosyncracies that do not exist at WDW that are worth noting - I discuss these in the link provided by Karyl:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=885132

And to my knowledge all advice given in this link is still valid in 2006.

If you are staying at a DLR hotel, it is also a no-brainer to book thru AAA and get the "Enhanced FastPass" feature - something that does not exist at WDW.

8. Other Advice:

Absolutely, positively, DO NOT MISS the Remember Dreams Come True fireworks/laser/special effects show. It is like no other show Disney has ever produced. However, DLR made the decision that most of the effects would only be visible from the hub area or far up Main Street. IMO, it is a no-brainer to watch Remember from this area. What this means is that you will need to arrive about an hour before the show starts to secure a good spot. Just make sure you have a good view of the castle. A good view of the Matterhorn too is a plus but not critical.

IMO, Fantasmic at DLR is much better than at WDW. If possible, go to the second showing as you can get good seats 30 minutes ahead of time.

I did not see anything at WDW that surpassed the Aladdin show at DCA. The only thing that came anywhere close was Beauty and the Beast at MGM Studios. Plan to see Aladdin. It is in the Hyperion Theater at DCA which has three major seating sections. Most would say that the mezzanine offers the best seats. Try to get there 30 minutes early.

RideMax - this neat little software can really help if you feel at all uncertain about what ride order to do. For $15-20 it can really add to your experience. See www.ridemax.com. They now have a version for WDW which has a lot of potential, IMO, but does not work as well as the DLR version at this point in time.

Who knows? I was basing my POTC comment on the Space Mtn popularity as noted by Lithium. It is still going strong. I think POTC will be abnormally popular for at least 6 months. Yes it will die down back to its original level - probably faster than Space Mtn because the changes are less signficant. But probably not until 2007 and maybe for a whole year. The opening of the Finding Nemo submarine ride in 2007 will probably distract people from POTC.

Hydroguy thanks a bunch for your post. We are going to Cal for the very first time in a couple of weeks. Believe it or not I've waited for this trip forever. We are hugh WDW veterans, go all the time, so it's so nice to read your report. We're staying in the GC for the Disney part of our trip and I'm happy to hear that it seems like the right choice. Also the weather sounds perfect. We're used to WDW in August so I'm guessing we'll love SoCal weather. Um, might not make it back to Ma!! Thanks again for taking the time to post!!!

Loribell, sorry for barging in on your thread. Hope you have a wonderful trip!!!

WOW. I've never been to DL. Or to WDW. I have no clue what it's like for Splash Mountain. I've been to Seattle Center, and the Puyallup Fair. Oh, and the King County Fair in Monroe - They had pig races.

So DL is going to be a whole new experience in soooo many ways! I'm going to be so overwhelmed, but less so thanks to you. :sunny:

Thanks so much for all the help everyone. I just wanted to say I'm really not lazy as it comes to researching, I actually love it. Unfortunately I will be out of town for the next 2 1/2 weeks and then again on the two weekends after that. That leaves very little time to find it all myself.

It is wonderful to have all this advice and links to where I can go without having to wade through many, many pages.

I am going to call and see if I can still book a room at the GC for part of the trip, don't have enough for the whole time but I'll check cash prices to. Maybe with points & cash we can swing staying there the whole trip.

My mother and I will only be going to the parks for the first few days then attending a conference in Long Beach the rest of the time, DH and the kids will have the rest of the time to really enjoy DL & take it easy. I think they will probably do some other things in the area. Any suggestions? DD is 7 and DS is 14. DD would love to go to Sea World in San Diego. Is it doable and enjoyable in just a day? DH and DS would like to go to West Coast Choppers. Anyone been there?

Thanks again so much! The info is wonderful and very helpful!
Lori

Disneymim,
Go ahead and post away. I don't mind at all!

wrwrwrwreee1971,
Hope you have a great time! I know we will.

I just thought of something else. What are the ride cars like on SPace Mountain at DL? Are they still the double seated cars that were there in 2000 or did they change them to the single seat cars like they have at WDW? Need to know because I won't let DD ride at WDW but always planned to let her ride at DL since she could sit beside us.

Thanks again,
Lori

They are still double.

They are doubles. Here we are riding last summer:

Thank you for asking this question! The answers you've gotten have been a big help to me too. Going in September for the first time since "one day" in 1987.

I am heading to DL for the first time ever after numerous visits to WDW. Thanks everyone for the advice!!
