tldr: Is noise part of a motel's 'charm'?

About 4 years ago we stayed at the Desert Inn and Suites. I knew it wasn't a fancy place but the disboards mostly said it was decent, clean and people really liked it. We ended up with a room that was clean-ish but the worst for us was the noise levels. I could hear people talking in the next room. I could make out what words they were saying. If someone sneezed we could hear it. I believe most of the noise we heard was from neighbors on either side and not above or below. When housekeeping's cart wheeled down the hallway, it literally shook the outside wall. I could see it vibrating. The blinds rattled. Had we not been staying there, the whole thing was really comical. Our next trip I ponied up the dough and we stayed at the GCH. It was wonderful of course:cool1:

Now I am planning our next trip in April and it has to be off-site. BWPPI is looking good, they have done a refurb and location is great of course. Mostly what I read is that it is great but the couple people that have complained about noise I am *really* paying attention to.

Which finally brings me to the question (and thanks for reading all this)
Is that kind of noise level just part and parcel of staying at a motel?

Would bringing a noise machine help?

Would staying on upper floor help?

I so appreciate all you guys reading this and I know it's my decision. I would love to hear what you have to say. I am also looking at Courtyard Marriott Theme Park Entrance and Fairfield Inn, but BWPPI with it's location is really what I am all about right now.

thank you!!:disrocks:

When in April are you going? Dapper Days is the weekend of the 21st, I believe. We have stayed at the Tropicana. It was a nice stay. I would have rather stayed at one of the DL Hotels, but, when finances dictate no, it was fine for sleeping and showering. I didn't hear any neighbors, but it could have been we had good ones. Either way, good luck.

Download a white noise app on your phone or e-reader, then you won't have to worry about outside noise!

We request the top floor at BWPPI, and we always bring a noise machine that we use at night to help muffle noise from the plumbing, adjacent room noise, hallway noise, etc. We haven't had a lot of trouble with noise at BWPPI. If you stay in a room near the pool, you will probably hear some pool noise, depending on the time of year it is. We stayed at DI&S this past summer. The outside noise in the hallways from the carts was pretty bad, but since we weren't sleeping it didn't bother us. I think it's because the door doesn't seal on the edges very well. We didn't have noisy neighbors...but it did seem like the walls were thinner than at BWPPI. We were on the second floor at DI&S, but didn't hear any overhead noise.

We always stay at the BWPPI and I have never noticed a noise issue. Naturally you can hear the fireworks, but I don't think its a big issue unless you had a poolside room - but even the pool closes at a certain time. That being said, it wouldn't hurt to bring a white noise machine or use an app as suggested by a PP, then I think for sure you'd be fine. I'd definitely do BWPPI with a noise machine over a shuttle ride to a hotel further away any day of the week :goodvibes

The noise at Fairfield, even the remodeled rooms, is really bad. Like you think someone is in your room. And I'm not picky about noise. Never stayed at be. Courtyard is totally fine. Its a hotel. Move than paradise pier. But it's pretty expensive. Alot of times paradise pier is almost the same cost. Usually or family of 4 can do paradise pier club level for cheaper because of the food and drink. But I drink a lot of diet soda!

nevada jen-that is exactly right-it's like there are people in your room! It is very unsettling. And thank you-I have removed Fairfield Inn off my list.

newbiemouse-this makes me feel better, thank you.

butterfly124-thanks!

Keep it coming! Also if anyone has any info on Park Vue Inn-I don't know why I never really considered that one but it looks pretty nice too. And outside the room noise (pool noise, traffic) doesn't bug us so much, it really is hearing people talk as if they are practically in the room with us and they were NOT being loud.

thanks everybody

We stayed at BWPPI last Dec- the bed was SO hard and the breakfast wasn’t great or accessible (if that matters), but the people working there were nice and it was clean (before remodel). We had no issue with noise- we were about 1/2 way down the hotel on the second floor- we didn’t stay in the room much but no issues with neighbor noise at all.

We've stayed at Tropicana 4 times, and will be there again in November. I have only noticed noise on two occasions and it was excited kiddos running to their room. Other than that, I've been very happy there(and the kiddos didn't make me unhappy, just noticed)

We usually stay at BWPPI or Tropicana (which is also refurbing)and we’ve never had any issues with noise at either. I’d way rather stay closer and risk a bit of noise than deal with shuttles for the whole trip. We really appreciate the 5 minute walk especially at the end of a long day!

Though a little further than right across the street (but still very walkable), we stayed at Hyatt House this month and it was dead quiet in terms of outside noise except for a very small handful of times when a kid would be running in the hallway. But you'll find that literally anywhere there's children staying. If you're looking for a quiet hotel like we were, it was perfect.

We stayed on the third floor about halfway back at BWPPI and never heard a sound. I think the rooms further from Harbor would tend to be quieter. I would definitely not want to stay in one of the first floor rooms by the office. Late at night, there were lots of people walking past those rooms to get to the stairs or elevator. We saw lots of "Do Not Disturb" signs on the doors so I know people were trying to sleep. I always reminded my family to be very quiet walking by those rooms. But, lots of people walking by were having loud conversations, kids were yelling and laughing, etc. I know I wouldn't get much sleep in one of those rooms.

Thanks everybody, I think I may try the BWPPI and try another motel. Really, outside noise didn't bug me nearly as much as hearing our neighbors. And they were NOT being loud. So I guess it was paper thin walls. But yes I will bring our trusty noise machine and request top floor. I will keep checking this thread if anyone else wants to chime in. (and I will secretly hope that there is some awesome promo that makes staying at the GCH possible, a girl can dream right?!)

I always request a room in a quiet location when making reservations there. We typically stay on the first floor at the BWPPI because those are the king rooms. We can hear noise outside if people are talking loudly and occasionally noise above, but I don't ever recall hearing noise from our neighbors.

As you mentioned you may also want to try the Park Vue. I have always wanted to try it but it is always more expensive for my dates so we have stuck with the BWPPI, but I don't think that's always the case. They have free parking too, and you'd also get the free breakfast and across the street location.
