Please settle an argument.

Bob Geldof

Now I have to read this thread to find out if I even have the right group. Once I wrote his name I starting thinking "wait, maybe he was only involved in the UK one..." (btw that one was MUCH better)

Why hasn't the OP come back to tell us the winner? Maybe we should all flood her PM box with requests for the answer?:rotfl:

Michael Jackson is the person I was thinking of. Thanks for all the replies!

And I sincerely apologize to anyone who now can't get the song out of their head....

Michael Jackson for me.

Man, now due to this thread, I miss Pop Up Video.

Why is this still going on it was Lionel Ritchie, jst watch the You Tube video linked to early in the thread.

I think of Michael Jackson.

I read an interesting article last year (wish I could find it) that talked about young children growing up during this time, and how they have seen that generation as adults now reaching out in Africa.

I don't know how true that is in general, but I remember being profoundly affected as a 7yo, hearing the song and watching all the accompanying media coverage. That year I took all my money and brought Christmas presents for the kids in Ethiopia (which is funny to me now that I chose toys over something practical, but again I was 7). Now as an adult I work in Global Outreach and specifically do a lot of aid work in East Africa. I also am the mother of a wonderful Ethiopian boy.

As for Do They Know It's Christmas...I loved that song but it drove me INSANE b/c most of "they" aren't even Christian, so why on EARTH would they care if it's xmas or not? Bonkers, I tell you. Made my mom bonkers too, and she WAS Christian (though I didn't know it at the time...she was a closet Christian, LOL), and still felt like the song was silly and disrespectful to the religions of the people it was meant to help. Sure made "us" feel good, though, didn't it?

Bumbershoot- Where in the world do you get your information? This is not the first time I've seen you make blantantly false statements about Africa as if they were fact. Timkat, the Ethiopian festival of the Epiphany (the 12th day of Christmas) is the biggest festival in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is very present in the Bible and Christianity was spread there before it was even spread in most of Europe. Of course not everyone there is Christian, but it is the majority religion. Islam is also present there.

Below is a link to a picture of one (there are many) Christian church from around 1200 AD. Ethiopians also believe this is also where the Ark of the Covenant is now located and take great pride in that. the government in Ethiopia offically embraced Christianity in 300 AD.

My first thought was Michael Jackson in that gold & black military garb & one gloved hand - singing by himself in a recording studio.

Then: Diana Ross
Dan Aykroyd

Well, since Geldof wrote it, it's really his motivation you'd have to question, isn't it?

I also think it's a bit of an ironical line. ;)
It is ironical, considering Bono is now one of the biggest proponents for African Relief efforts. Even if he did sing it, I think Beth76 can now forgive him. :)
