Before I had Jacob, lots of people told me that all babies will fall out of their parents' bed at least once. I guess I thought that it wouldn't happen to me, or that it would at least happen after the baby could roll over, but he fell out this morning.
I fell asleep during a 3:30 am nursing session. I was reclined on pillows near the edge of the bed. (I know, I should have been closer to the middle.) Anyway, I woke up around 4:30 in time to see the baby sliding off my stomach, down the side of the bed, and onto the floor. Fortunately, he sort of hugged the side of the bed on the way down and didn't hit very hard at all. He started crying as soon as he hit the floor, but he calmed down about 10 seconds after I picked him up. I'm sure that it didn't hurt him, but I feel so bad.
The worse part is that I had bought a rail for the bed for just such an event. I just hadn't installed it yet. It was sitting in it's box about 10 feet from the bed. Trust me, it is installed now, and I'll never sit at the edge of the bed to nurse again, even in the middle of the day.
