Before I had Jacob, lots of people told me that all babies will fall out of their parents' bed at least once. I guess I thought that it wouldn't happen to me, or that it would at least happen after the baby could roll over, but he fell out this morning. :(

I fell asleep during a 3:30 am nursing session. I was reclined on pillows near the edge of the bed. (I know, I should have been closer to the middle.) Anyway, I woke up around 4:30 in time to see the baby sliding off my stomach, down the side of the bed, and onto the floor. Fortunately, he sort of hugged the side of the bed on the way down and didn't hit very hard at all. He started crying as soon as he hit the floor, but he calmed down about 10 seconds after I picked him up. I'm sure that it didn't hurt him, but I feel so bad.

The worse part is that I had bought a rail for the bed for just such an event. I just hadn't installed it yet. It was sitting in it's box about 10 feet from the bed. Trust me, it is installed now, and I'll never sit at the edge of the bed to nurse again, even in the middle of the day.

yep it happens....sleep deprivation will do that to you...

fortunately, they never remember, and won't need years of therapy to get over it......

YOu're doing a great job....and he'll be fine

Well, my kids have never fallen off of the bed but Mosey did fall off of the couch once. She had a little bruise on her cheek because it landed on her hand and I was afraid to take her out in public for fear people would give me the evil eye. I finally did take her out in public and people did give me the evil eye (or at least I thought they were ;) ). ;) I think whether most people will admit it or not, it happens. Don't fret!!

*calmly picks up the phone to call CPS* Har Har Har ;)

Sure they do! :) I was always comforted by my Dr. Spock book which promised that there was no permanent damage if they stopped crying within 5 minutes. ;)

One of our Babies rolled out at six months , After a nursing session as well...A trip to the emergency room at 2am when he wouldn't stop screaming, ANd he was fine. Not even a bruise. Mom was mortified and the great grandmother was furious with me.....It is very scary but I think they all do it.

the good news is, they bounce! :teeth:

Seriously, it happens, don't worry. :)

My baby didn't fall out of bed, somehow. But I think what I did was worse.
I was clipping her nails and she moved at the wrong time. I clipped the very tip of her finger with the nail. I felt so horrible and I think I cried for a week, but she still loves me. :)

I read someone post either to a list or board I'm on awhile ago that when they had a waterbed when their baby was a newborn and one morning her husband came in and sat down on the bed really heavy and the baby flew up into the air and off the bed. I can't remember if the baby landed or if her husband caught the baby. I just always laugh when I think of that story, it is almost too comical to be true. :teeth:

Aw, Amy... you sound like ME!

I remember one morning during our usual every three hour feeding I had Michael in the crook of my arm and my arm just straightened and he rolled right down it to the floor and under the end table!!! :earseek: Needless to say that woke me up! He never cried, he just had this look on his face, like "OMG, is THIS what's going to take care of me????"

I remember calling his Grandmother hysterical, she worked nights in a neonatal care unit of a hospital and raised 7 children. She just laughed at me and reassured me that those little guys are WAY more resilient than we'll ever be. Otherwise there would never be another generation!
:teeth:

kermit-It happened to Avery too only she rolled off of the couch. She was fine though. :)

Serena-I did the same thing to DD! I felt so horrible. She got over it in a few minutes though. ;) :)

at least once with each one. No permanent damage. They are both healthy intelligent Disney loving young ladies now.

Kermit. Deep deep breath. You are more upset that he is. I promise you. They all do something to give us fits. When DS was an infant, he had a touch of colic, and after feeding, we would put him in his car seat/carrier and sort of gently swing him to sleep. Well, DH and I were sleep deprived and DH forgot to buckle him in. Yep, you guessed it, he popped right out. He was fine, I was hysterical.

Even worse was when he was about 41/2, he had moved to his big bed, and fell out of bed on Christmas Eve. He had a little wooden chair next to his bed, that he kept his water cup on. Well he fell out, and must have knocked his head. It was not until 4 days later (hello Mother of the Year committee, I am still waiting...;))that I noticed the bruise behind his ear. I called the ped, and they sent us to the ER, because apparently, bruising behind the ear can be a signal of a skull fracture, because that is where the blood pools. He was fine, once again, I was nearly hysterical. It was all fine, and now he has a soft chair next to his bed for his cup of water. :teeth:

Please don't be down on yourself, it happens to all of us in one way or another.

{{{{{hugs}}}}}} anyway, I know you feel terribly about it.

My oldest son rolled off the changing table at 6 months, i was scared to death, those tables are pretty high! My youngest rolled off my bed at 3 months! I was also nursing a colicy baby who hardly ever slept, which made me sleep deprived, no wonder it happened. Don't feel bad, its happened to most of us one time or another!

Oh yes...our daughter rolled off the changing table, fell off a bed and rolled out of bed while she slept. It scares the fire out of you and it makes you sick to your stomach when it happens but just watch your child like a hawk and do your best.

OK, OK... my DD fell out of bed once.

My 8 month old DS has fallen out of bed twice (once at daycare and once while at ASMovies), been pulled off the couch by his big sister once and (I get the bad mom of the year for this) fell out of highchair onto the floor because I took the tray off the chair and just *walked away*. I'm still not sure what I was thinking that day.

Point being... he's fine! He's a big, healty boy with a very hard head and I thank God that he's too young to remember this :)

OK, confession time for me too...a roll off of the changing table for my DD. Yep, I think the effects are worse and last longer on the mom than the baby! At 16 DD is an honor student (no ill effects fromt the head bump apparently ;) ) and good kid, and I'm STILL a worry wart ....now it's cars and boys instead of changing tables and beds
Hang in there :)

LOng time lurker here but I had to post to this one. A good friend of mine has 4 and when the youngest was about 2 mos. he rolled off the bed and somehow ended up on the floor under the bed. My friend went back to check on him, couldn't find the baby and ran around the house accusing the other 3 of hiding the baby. After about 15 minutes her 2nd oldest found the baby under the bed sound asleep. Sh said she still felt guilty about this 4 years later.

Kermit, when my DD was 4, she was watching tv in my room on the bed while I took a shower (It happened to be 9/11, and also her first day back at preschool, that's how I remember this incident so well.) Anyhow, i was in the shower, and all of a sudden I heard a huge boom, and I started yelling out "What was that?" I wasn't getting a response, so I ran out of the shower and she had fallen off of the bed after wrapping herself up in the comforter. Our bed is pretty high up, and she had knocked the wind out of herself and couldn't even speak!! You can imagine what I was thinking!! She finally stated crying and said her back hurt. She really couldn't even move, and I was debating whether or not to go to the doctor's but after a while she was fine, and was able to go to preschool that afternoon. It was so scary!! So, yes, it does happen, even to older kids! I'm sure Jacob is fine, its Mom that's shaken up, and I know where you're coming from!!:D

Oh, and one time, I forget to put the gate up at the end of the hallway, and I found DS crawling towards the stairs, I caught him just in the nick of time!! (Bad mommy, bad mommy!)

My youngest was about 2mths and my neice had been staying with us to watch her. She was in the living room with her and left the room, I heard my DD crying and went in the room but couldn't find her. Finally realized that she'd rolled off the couch into a laundry basket so she was in the clothes. :o My neice was so upset and insisted that she'd left her way back on the couch. We soon realized that she wasn't staying in one place anymore if you left her alone. Just didn't expect it when she was so small.
