I have waivered on this - debating the pros and cons. I really want to rent the points and stay at BCV, but I am so worried about what could happen especially in this economy. Please reassure me that it will work out. I want to travel next April so I need to make up my mind soon.

Thanks

Hi:wave2:

I don't rent out our points. I think that if you're going to stress out about it for a year, I don't recommend that you do it. However, from the posts here, most of the rentals go very well, the people on both sides are happy and very often the person who rents points finds that they like DVC enough to buy into it themselves.

The economy works for both sides. Many owners are finding that they can't go as much as they would like and have the extra points to rent. Renting from owners is a bargain compared to what Disney charges.

Best wishes as you make your decision.

For what it's worth, no one can guarantee that nothing bad will happen, but many on here will tell you that the odds of it happening are very very slim.

I've rented twice without any incidents, and would not hesitate to do it again. Check some of the stickies on the rent/trade board, as well as other threads here on DIS to get some more info on renting.

Remember, it is a private transaction between you and someone else, you will want to have a contract as well.

Good luck with whatever direction you take

I can't reassure you about the possibility of bad things happening. However, I think if you find a renter you feel comfortable with, you will be reassured.

Are you worried about something happening to your financial situation and not being able to afford the trip? I know that the person I'm renting from does offer a full refund up to 2 mos before the trip. I'd think in most cases you'd know if you couldn't travel by then. They also offer the option of rescheduling the trip or offering a full/partial refund if they are able to re-rent the points to someone else. I think this is something you should really look for when renting points.

My other advice is make sure you are comfortable with the renter. I had initially planned to rent from someone for $8/pp at BWV, then the other couple dropped out and so she moved on to someone else. When I found another person to rent from at $8.75/pp, she didn't want a contract, wanted full payment within 2 wks, I got nervous as none of these things were what the initial person was going to do. Generally she seemed short in her emails and sketchy.

I posted and got a response from another member. Prices were higher but they had references, a very fair contract and answered all my questions thoroughly and quickly. Despite prices being higher I think this was the right decision for us. We feel very comfortable with our decision. This diser has been great so far and if everything goes as planned I wouldn't hesitate to rent from them again. Good luck with your decision!

I can say that in the 7 years I've been hanging out on these boards, I only remember a few specific situations where someone actually got cheated out of their money. And by few, I mean less than 5.

The great majority of rentals go very smoothly. And most owners who rent are only doing it to recoup their loan/MF costs, since they can't go themselves that year. It's not a business for these folks, they're just Disney vacation fans like you.

That said, there is simply no way for us to guarantee that all will be well with your rental. It's completely a matter of trust between you and the owner. You won't have any control over the reservation, and you won't be able to confirm it. All you'll have to go by will be the confirmation from Disney that the owner sends you a copy of. The confirmation itself is no guarantee, as the reservation can be cancelled at any time by the owner.

Remember that saying, "There's no such thing as a free lunch?" It applies here. You will save a good deal of money by renting, but there's a tradeoff - the lack of security and comfort you get by booking through Disney. You'll have to decide whether the money you save will be worth the lack of control over the reservation.

You were very lucky. I think most owners consider renting to be a final transaction. It's not always possible to re-rent points or reschedule trips, short-notice reservations are getting more and more difficult. And all of that involves a good bit of additional work for the owner, which they may not be able or willing to do.

I know! That's why we were willing to up our budget. The renter is more than fair in their terms and is very helpful, really they are great people! We're still saving money and have out peace of mind.
