I had posted around Christmastime about my 8 year-old Scottish Terrier, Maggie. We had found out she has an aggressive form of cancer and only had 6-12 months. Well about 3 weeks ago, she has really been slowing down. A week and a half ago, we took her to the vet, thinking we were going to put her down. But the morning of the appt., it was like she was a different dog. She was back to her normal self, which lasted for a few days.

She doesn't eat her food, doesn't eat treats, doesn't want human food. We bought her the wet dog food which she eats a little of....oh and she will eat a little bit of a meat ball. I noticed today her breathing is becoming a bit irratic so I think this might be the last weekend with her. :sad2:

It's just so heartbreaking because the Maggie we knew just a 6 weeks ago, is not the Maggie we see today. I don't want her to suffer and I'm making her as comfortable as possible. She's just so darn cute! :sad1:

Cancer is such a terrible, terrible thing.

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I had a cat that struggled with cancer, and you are right, it is a terrible thing. My prayers are with your little girl and with you.

:sad1: It's so hard to go through that. I had to put my cat down a few years ago and I still miss her.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Prayers and good thoughts to you and your sweet Maggie.

I'm so sorry, Tim:sad1: I went through this two years ago with my 13 year old Chow..it was devastating and I'm still not over:guilty: I wish your dog peace:)

Awww Tim...I'm so sorry!

Take lots of pics and give her lots of pets and hugs and kisses.

I am so sorry. Someone posted this not long ago on another pet thread. Maybe it will help.

Author FROM FRIEND TO FRIEND

You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

I'm sorry for you.

I've lost a couple of dogs, mostly to natural causes but I remember one that I lost due to bladder cancer. It was devastating because she was in the prime of her life and to see her go down like that was awful.

I'm sorry you have to go through this--it is heartbreaking. And even when you know you are doing the RIGHT thing, it is something that is hard to make peace with.

I'm so sorry. I know how hard it is.

I'm so sorry you're being faced with this. :sad1:

I've had issues with Chloe lately too, and she's still not better either. I don't have the prospect of having to put her down in the immediate future, but I know things are going well for her. :sad2:

You'll be in my thoughts.

Tim, I am so sorry. These little furry creatures sure have a way of taking a hold on our hearts.

That's how I feel too...I know this is the right thing to do but its just hard to accept. I just looked at her in her bed, and she looks so peaceful. I wish it wasn't so nasty out..I'd take her the park in town she loves because it's probably her favorite place in the world.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and prayers. I really appreciate it. :) And Virgo, I love what you posted. I printed it out and am going to put it in a frame next to her picture I think.

Chloe will be in my prayers, too. I hope she makes a turnaround. :grouphug:

 I'm so sorry that you and your baby are going through this. hang in there, you'll both be in my prayers.

Oh man, I am so sorry. I know how difficult this must be for you. Just the thought of having to do the same for Bill one day chokes me up.

Just know that you brought as much love, companionship and friendly duty to Maggie as she did for you.

All dogs go to Heaven my friend.

Peace

:sad1: Tim I'm so sorry. I had this happen to my cat a few years ago. Your dog is so lucky to have a daddy like you to take such good care of her. After I post and wipe my eyes I'm going to give my Papillon a big kiss for your dog.:grouphug:
