Years ago I worked in a pediatric nursing home. There was a young man there... only 11 years old... who was the victim of a terrible accident. When he was 9 he filled a balloon up with water, put it in his mouth and bit down. The balloon exploded and shot a piece of rubber down his throat. I don't remember how long he was without oxygen but it was too long. What we had in the nursing home was only a shell of the boy he must have been. I swore I would tell this story to anyone who would listen for the rest of my days if it would prevent another accident of this type.

I'm not talking about mylar balloons but the standard - you can get them anywhere- balloons.

Please, please, please, no balloons. I wish these were outlawed.

I agree... I dont allow them in my house. If someone brings them over I get rid of them quickly after they leave. I dont want to hurt their feeling but my cats and dog would play with them.

thats to bad, but almost everything could be dangerous

We get them at restaurants then "send them up to Jesus". Of course the day finally came when my older son asked why Jesus gets all the balloons?!

Thank you for the reminder.....

When I was a clown we had a policy of not giving latex balloons to any child under the age of 5. One thing I did was was make balloon animals. If I was doing a party for a pre-school child that was omitted. At the Pizza Hut where I did a weekly thing I substituted stickers for the preschool set.
Very sad that a child's life was destroyed by a balloon accident. Balloons should only be used under supervison of an adult and never by children under 5.

Those make me so nervous. DS doesn't understand why I don't buy them for water balloons and such. I've always read they are 1 of the leading choking hazards in kids and it makes me nervous. I just don't want them around.
