My first ever trip to WDW is April 5-9, the week before Easter. I'm a teacher, so I have to use my spring break, or go in the summer (I have a hard time with hot weather). My 6 yr old and I are very excited, but I've read a lot of negative things about going at this time of year. One "veteran" said s/he would never go during April! I really need someone who has actually been to WDW around Easter to tell me we will still enjoy it. Please give me some words of encouragement (although I'm not asking anyone to gloss over the facts).

:worried:

Thank you!

I think if you plan your days, not so much that there's no room for change, so that you have a good idea where and what you want to do you should be ok. Remember April can be hot, cold, or in between so take some warm and cool clothes. I would suggest getting your PS made asap to avoid waiting in lines to eat. Take advantage of early opening times...
We went the week before Easter one year. My dh is a teacher too. From what I can remember eating was the hardest thing we did. I know you will get some good ideas... Have a fun trip. :)

I am a teacher, too, and can only access a WDW vacation during school breaks. I have been at WDW the last 2 years during the week after Easter Sunday and, yes, it is crowded but doable.

Use EE if available and leave the parks to enjoy your resort pool or DD during the afternoon. Go back in the evening and enjoy the parks then. Use fastpasses as much as possible.

DH and I will be there again this year. We have our PS already arranged for Easter Sunday at Boma's for breakfast. We plan to kick back and enjoy what we can and do not plan on doing it all.

EPCOT is a beautiful park and seems to absorb crowds easily, so wander around there and enjoy that park and all it offers.

Enjoy your break!!!!

Noopy,

We're in the same boat. Getting very, very nervous about the crowds. We've made all our PS's and know the parks pretty well, but we're really fearing walking down Main Street shoulder to shoulder! Good luck to all of us!

We did not have a problem during Easter week last April. If you arrive at the parks when they open you will have no problem getting onto your favorite rides, especially if you use "fastpass".
We had PS at Cindy's on Easter morning, and MK did not become very crowded until noon. Also remember that the parks remain open later during this week. You can go back to your room, rest up, and return to the parks at night.
The only time we faced really bad crowds were at TL and BB.
Get to these parks early or you will not find a seat. :) :sunny:

I have not been there in April, so I cant answer your questions about... :crowded: -Ive only been in August. But I bet if you go with a plan, and a plan to toss the plan when needed, you'll do great!

I have come to the conclusion that there are crowds ALL the time at WDW. Be laid back about it all, if the crowds are thick, walk away and say "we'll be back" and go back in the evening, before 10 am, whatever your plan is.

Just cause its crowded doesnt mean you wont have a good time.

And my motto is, if things are getting stressful, have a Mickey Ice Cream Bar- works everytime for me!!:cool1:

When my DS was a little guy we were at WDW for Easter week and it was the most crowded I have ever experienced. That being said, we had discovered the Unofficial Guide to WDW and followed the touring plans offered in the Guide very closely and really had very little problems doing all that we wanted. There are many great guides to WDW but for me nothing gets down to the reality of touring like this guide. For you , being a teacher, you are probably already an organized person, and this approach would probably work well for you. Another great benefit of this guide is the incredible amount of humor in the writing and just plain craziness of Disney. I remember saying to my friend who went with us..."no way am I running like an idiot to go on Space Mountain at 8am!!!" And of course we all ran to go on Space Mountain at 8am and had an absolute blast doing it and it set the exciting tone for the rest of the day!!I am one of those people who truly believes a vacation is 90% what you make it, and for me being at WDW at any time (especially with my DS) is way better than most other things in life!!

There are some good things about going during the busy weeks around Easter. My DSIL went last year (also a teacher) instead of waiting until summer as usual. She said that even though it was crowded and the lines for rides were long, WDW does things to entain the crowds. Such as: there will be more shows at the castle forecourt and in the tommorowland theatre, they may have the parade twice and spectromagic twice, and the characters were out more than usual. So you may not get as many rides done but you will see more of the shows that you miss when it's not crowded.

We have gone mid July and managed to do everything we wanted to. We made very good use of FP and touring plans from The Unofficial Guide to WDW. I would not thnk of going to WDW without the Unofficial Guide touring plans. They make all the differance in the world.

Enjoy your trip!

Haley.

You didn't mention whether you are staying on Disney property. If you are, you are golden. I cannot stress enough to USE EARLY ENTRY. Get your son out of bed early, get on the first bus in the morning and walk in an hour before the public. It is an outstanding perk, to be able to walk into these parks with just a couple hundred people versus thousands. You can walk on to most rides pretty quickly and cover alot of ground very fast. By about 10:30, you won't believe how much you've accomplished. By 11:30, hopefully you've made a PS at one their restaurants and you can sit down and relax. Leave the park after lunch and nap! or swim. But just relax, its really important to gear up for the evening. Disneyworld is fabulous at night, everywhere you go. So do get up early and make yourself get on the buses an hour before the public can!!!!! Have a blast, I know you will.

The last time we went to WDW, we were dreading going during April. However, we created a plan and were flexible enough to change it when needed. We were so pleasantly surprised. Disney is absolutely wonderful at crowd control. Most of the time the lines move quickly and you are entertained along the way. AND FP is a wonderful invention. Sometimes, it is also a blast to strick up a conversation to those around you waiting in line...it is fun to talk about the ride when some have been on before and some have not.

Don't fret it... Disney is magic and even large crowds can't change that.

I would also recommend making PS at the resturants of your choice as soon as possible. This was my DH's favorite part of the vacation. When we were tired and hungry we walked right into the resturant and sat down for a nice leisurely (and themed) meal before we got our second wind. It was Awesome.

We go again on 4/10/04 for Land/cruise. Can't wait. Have fun...this is your time.

This is our first time as well. Look at like this. Your going to be at Disney and not at work. Yes there will be crowds but you will be at Disney. Enjoy, have a plan, and remember your at Disney.

We will have a plan and I am sure it will change. I think that with our plan we will look at it and as soon as we are there we will be like what plan at first then try to get with our plan. It's our honeymoon and vacation..everyone have fun.

I haven't been during April...yet (we'll be there 4/24 to 5/2 this year though) but we went from 12/28/03 to 1/3/04 and had a fabulous time! :) Disney had their largest crowds ever during that week and we still had a fantastic time.

I would HIGHLY recommend the automated planner at www.tourguidemike.com on a holiday week though. We found it to be a lifesaver as far as avoiding the crowds went. We followed his advice every day except our first day and out first day was the only day we experienced loooooong lines. Other than that the longest line I stood in all week was to buy lunch at Epcot! The second longest was to ride the safari ride in the AK without fast pass on New Years Eve and that was only a 20 minute wait. Following his advice we found it to be true that we did not wait more than 15 minutes for anything. :) WELL worth the $18 or so to purchase the planner. We found a "front row" seat for Spectro less than 15 minutes before it started (second showing) by looking where he told us to look, we didn't wait in lines and we avoided the most crowded parks. There were thigns we skipped b/c we knew we would be back in the spring when the crowds are lower and all those things would still be there (at least we're hoping the last week in April will be slower since Spring Breaks will be over and summer vacation not yet begun!). My husband and father were absolutely amazed at the difference in frustration level and how much we were able to do between our first day and the rest of the trip. We knew we were going against advice by our schedule for the first day but due things out of our control, we couldn't let our sons do the 2 things they really wanted to do on our first day (breakfast with Pooh and see certain MK attractions) if we followed his advice. Honestly, I can not recommend this any higher. I'd consider it a "must" for holiday week planning. :)

Stop worrying, you'll have a fabulous time even if you are sharing it with tons of other people. :)

Have been Easter time 14 times. It is most crowded time of year along with Christmas Week. For those who have never been that time of year or Christmas, but have been during crowded summer months or other spring break weeks, just start thinking double the largest crowd size you have seen to give you an idea of Easter-time. Do not recommend for first time visitor but you can survive:

1. When you get in, check for actual opening times for parks. They often change just when you arrive, e.g., they may be opening all parks an hour or more early every day.

2. Hit the park when it opens in morning as that is time when lines will not be huge, although within 2 hours thereafter they will be.

3. Epcot is the lightest park all week, at least in feel because its open spaces are so large. In the morning never head straight for Spaceship Earth. It is the first thing everyone sees when they enter and lines get huge at that time; after 2 that ride will be a walk-on. In fact, after 3, everything except Test Track and Mission Space are fairly easy to get on. Test Track and Mission Space must be hit early in morning or by means of fastpass thereafter, because by 10:30 lines will be 2 hours and then they get to 3 hours and there is no let up before closing.

4. MGM follows a similar pattern to Epcot. Very early morning you can hit just about anything, then lines for Mermaid, Rockin Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror go to 90 to 150 minutes. Most everything else also gets huge lines but after 3 they become fairly easy to get on. For stage shows, you need to arrive 45 minutes or more early to get a decent seat. Indiana Jones is easier in late afternoon to evening. Also, never head to Star Tours right after Indiana Jones lets out as half the Jones crowd does that causing a huge spike in line; other times in late afternoon and evening Star Tours can go down to 20 minute or less line. If there are two Fantasmics in the evening, the first one requires you to get in line an hour early just to have chance to get in; second one never fills and you can walk in just before it begins. You can also use Fantasmic dinner package for that first one. Also, during first one, lines for Rockin Rollercoaster, Tower, and Mermaid, can get down to under 30 minutes. If only one Fantasmic in evening best is to do dinner package (if you have not reserved do so quickly, 1-407-WDW-Dine).

5. Animal Kingdom: unfortunately a nightmare most every day, except Sat and Sunday are its lightest days. One of its problems is that it has mostly narrow walkways and thus it does not take many to cause place to be elbow to elbow. First thing in morning you can hit some things, and after 5 there can also be a substantial decrease in lines at popular rides. In between, 1 hour to 2 hour lines for most everything. Fast Pass is necessity at most. Stage shows require you to arrive 45 minutes early to get a seat. Many like to eat at Rainforest; unfortunately it can be real nightmare that time of year with long wait both to get seat and to get food (known those who entered at 12:30 and finally got their food at 3).

6. Magic Kingdom: the most crowded of all. Huge crowds everyday and even larger Easter Sunday and day after Easter; park can go to capacity those two days. Again early morning you can hit some things but then by 10 lines for the mountains, Peter Pan, Pooh, Jungle Ride go to 2 hours or more and stay there all day and night, although lines sometimes go to under 30 minutes during a parade. Dumbo also huge line almost all day and night. Others, like Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Country Bear, Tiki can have hour or more lines in morning to about 3:30 and then after 4 lines can reduce to 20 minutes or less (with periods of walk-ons). That lasts until about 7:30 or 8 when the "second" wave comes in with huge numbers returning for nightly parade and under false belief place would not be crowded after they ate dinner. Swiss Family Treehouse, the absolute worst attraction in WDW, gets hour or longer line in morning; either skip it entirely or wait until late afternoon when line reduces. Also note, Jungle Ride is very deceptive; you will look and believe there is no or a short line and not believe sign that says 60 minutes. Then you enter and find out there is that line inside an open but covered building walled off from site to those coming in. Usually the minute signs outside a ride are correct although often late afternoon to evening they may not be, showing longer than line actually is because they haven't changed sign.

7. Waterparks: these go to capacity by 11 or 11:30 everyday if weather is warm (most often it is). If you want a chair you must get there early in the morning.

8. Easter Saturday and Easter are lightest but still crowded days at MGM, AK and Epcot. Many have the incorrect belief that weekdays everywhere should be less crowded than weekends because local residents come on weekends; not true; local residents avoid this place like the plague throughout Easter time and crowds most everywhere are larger on weekdays because heaviest travel days are Sat and Sun (and those traveling don't go to parks on travel day). Exception is MK which has its worst day Easter Sunday. Reason: many believe something special happens there on Sunday that you cannot see other days of the week. The truth: absolutely nothing goes on at MK on Sunday that you cannot see other days of the week. The "Easter Parade," which is merely the daily parade at three with some Easter themed floats added, usually runs the entire week before Easter and on Easter.

9. MK Parades: squatters start taking curbside and other ideal viewing points beginning about 2 hours before the parade (which lasts about 20 to 25 minutes). Battles then ensue as others try to cut in on their space. The parades are not worth a 2 hour or even hour wait. Best is to find elevated area like the stairs of Town Hall to view shortly before parade begins.

10. Dinner: If you have not done so, call for PS's for any sit-down dinner or character meal you may desire. True story: was once at Crystal Palace at 5:30 for PS on Thursday before Easter and family of four walked up without PS and asked for "next available time." CM went to his listings and then looked up and said, "Tuesday at 8:30." They then asked if it was even possible to get in that night if they waited and he told them not to even risk waiting. For any park restaurant, get a PS for dinner. For non-park restaurants, you can get PS for dinner usually by calling day before, but most important is to get a PS if restaurant takes them. If you want sit-down lunch, you can usually get in fairly easy as long as you avoid key 11:00 to 2 lunch period. Also note that even counter service places can get 30 minute lines during regular lunch and dinner hours.

Drusba, EXCELLENT assessment!! You really should save that and post every time someone asks this same question. That just about covers everything. The only thing I would add to my previous post is the best time for a lunch PS is 11:30. This is the first time available and the crowds are much lower than say noonish. Again, use the early entry times, well worth getting up early!! :D

I would suggest bringing a few small games/activities to do with your son while you are waiting in line for attractions, shows and parades etc.

With crowds you will have waits at every turn.

Adults get tired of waiting, imagine being 6 and waiting in line 30 minutes to an hour for each 3 minutes attraction......

I also plan snacks and meals during waits.

If you are going to line up on the sidewalk for a parade or fireworks, why not get take out and eat a meal while you are waiting?

With crowds it's best to anticipate your needs early. Don't wait to buy a drink when someone is thirsty, stock up ahead of time etc.

Have fun!
