For you guys that have went on the meal plan before, how do you guys do it? We've always went, paid OOP for meals, always eat signatures. But for the trip in Jan with this big group, I'm thinking about doing the basic dining plan for everyone. With only one TS a day, do you guys use it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. And when you travel with young kids (since Clayton will only be 3), how do you plan your meals to make sure the little ones get rest breaks? I've never struggled this hard putting a trip together but I just can't figure this one out.

And how do you guys feel about park hopper tickets vs non park hoppers?

I'd appreciate all the help you guys can give me.

Pakey, I have never done the meal plan, however, I do have a lot of experience traveling with:

A) Groups
and
B) Short people, aka Children

Character meals are great - I like killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. Once you have seen them in a restaurant, no need to wait in a line in the park to see the same one, right? With Clayton being 3, I would think he would be ok with the characters, but you never can tell. My 3 year old didn't go near the characters until the 4th day! :confused3 Then she loved it! If he is the only child on the trip, I would pick one or two that appeal to you the most. After that, it might get a little tedious! :confused3

Early breakfasts are nice with little ones (they are usually up and raring to go anyway, it's us adults who are usually lagging) plus you can get those nice empty park pictures and the kids can see so much when the park is empty! Crystal Palace and Chef Mickey's would be my choices for an early bkfast on MK day!

They are always going to try and seat large groups at times that are closest to opening of the service time or closing. So with children in tow, that works out anyway! Once they are actually hungry, they will get grumpy fast! Better to beat them to it! They will usually offer 7:30/8:00 for bkfast; 11:00/11:30 for lunch; 5:00 for dinner for early seatings for large groups, after that it will be late in the evening (not usually great with kids) You might want to get used to that time change before you do an early bkfast though - yikes!

On our last trip, we had one TS meal a day (we weren't on the dining plan, but I still found it much better to have that one meal where we didn't have to worry about wandering around with trays and kids, looking for tables, pushing them together, etc, etc, etc). It's just nice to have them come to you. Our TS meals were for 2 breakfast seatings, 2 lunch seatings, and 3 dinner seatings. A good variety.

We stayed offsite, so we didn't really need a lot of breakfasts in the parks (ate at the vacation house), but we had to have a Princess Bkfast (6 little girls with us:rolleyes1 ) and our other bkfast was our departure day at Chef Mickeys, so we had checked out of the house that morning without eating!

As far as buffet vs. non-buffet, that's hard. With kids, sometimes buffets are a lot of work - you're up and down, up and down :headache: but then again...buffets provide instant gratification for a hungry child! No waiting for their food to be brought out. 6 in one, 1/2 dozen in the other. With only the one child, I would think the aggravation of getting up and down would be minimal.

My favorite type of dining (by far) with children is family style. The food comes fairly fast, and you don't have to go anywhere to get it! You just have to make sure you like the menu beforehand! :rolleyes1 LTT, PSB, Garden Grill, HDDR, are all family style.

Hopper vs. non-hopper:
I like the flexibility of a hopper, but it adds a lot of expense when you're talking about a large # of tickets. It also adds a lot of time into your day of traveling to and from one park to another. But it is nice to know that if you go somewhere and it's way more crowded than you anticipated, you can go somewhere else.

I felt pretty good about my park choices this last trip (thanks to UOG and mostly TGM), but we still had to get the park hopper in order to work in two of our events we wanted to do. :headache: I would not have purchased the hopper this trip if it hadn't been for those two scheduling issues. Just would not have been worth it for our large group to mobilize to another park mid-day - it just eats up too much time. For an adults only trip, or with older children, I think it's probably worth it just to have some flexibility.

As far as resting goes, I think park touring in the AM, eating lunch, and leaving for "rest" is usually the best thing. Then return to the park for dinner, parade, shopping, and fireworks (with a child who is hopefully a little less cranky).

And if you are there early and stay ahead of the crowds for those first few hours, you won't feel like you are missing out on something, when you leave to go "rest". IF you come in around 9:30 or 10:00, ride 2 rides and then eat lunch, you won't much feel like leaving for a "break" ya know?

Granted, I say this, HAVING NEVER DONE IT! :rolleyes1 So take it with a grain of salt. :rolleyes1

I always thought it wouldn't be wise to do it, but sometimes those meltdowns (adults and children) can be avoided with a little down time. It doesn't have to be sleeping, per se, just a dip in the pool, or watching a little TV, just being away from the constant stimulation can do wonders for a child's temperament! (Like I said though, I have never done that - my kids have always napped in the stroller :rolleyes1 but there were a couple of days there that I thought it would have been nice). And the kids still ask how come they didn't get to spend more time in the pool. (I'm just saying... sometimes we think staying in the parks the whole time is what the kids want, and then when we get home, they talk about playing an X-box, or swimming. Um, hello? You have every video game imaginable at home and your grandparents who live 10 minutes away have a pool! :confused3 )

Where are you staying? Those monorail resorts sure do look like easy places to be able to get back to for a "rest", especially on your MK and Epcot days! I also think if you are paying a lot for a resort room, why not take advantage of what the resort actually has to offer for the kids! Some of those pools look amazingly fun!

I don't know if that was much help, but seriously, I could go on and on about traveling with a big group, lots of children, and now, since our Thanksgiving trip, at a busy time of year! :rolleyes1 Yes, we were a little crazy this last trip! Herding cats, I tell ya! But also some fantastic memories! So ask away and I will be glad to help wherever I can.

Wow guys, thanks so much. You've already given me a ton of stuff to consider. And Monica, sorry I'm hijacking the Dec pre trippie and throwing my Jan pre trippie in with it. But you guys are the experts so why start another thread? :rotfl2: You're the ones I'd want to talk to about this anyway.

Well, so far, 3 rooms are at the Beach Club Villas. That's my fav so I'm staying there. Also, at this point, DS32 and his wife are staying there and DS27 and his girlfriend will be staying there. The other two rooms, one which would include Clayton, is booked at SSR for right now but at 7 months, I'll be calling to waitlist to move. The thing is, they ALL want to stay at AKL. However, I think that's a bad idea. Don't get me wrong, I love that resort. I just think for Clayton's first visit, they are putting themselves so far away from MK, especially since we'll only be there for 4 days before catching the cruise. It would be better to stay at BC, BW or WL. So I'm thinking about waitlisting them for those 3 and just lying and telling them there wasn't any openings at AKL. I just think going all the way back to AKL for a nap would be awful on a short trip like this. Opinions anyone?

We've always had hoppers. The kids have always had them (we've taken them 3 times as adults, just not Clayton. So they are expecting hoppers, I know. But it's $43 difference per ticket. It doesn't sound like much but everything is adding up so fast.

I do think the meal plan is going to be the best way to go for those of us eating with Clayton. I think DS32 and DS26 are going to do their own thing; so I'm sure that means signatures for them while will mean the Deluxe Plan. But I think the rest of us can get by with the regular plan. I was thinking buffets might be a bit better because Mo's ex is a very strict vegetarian and the sitdowns just aren't going to have much variety for her. So if we did one buffet or family style sit down per day plus a counter service, that should be plenty.

And I am worried about that time change. I did take the early dining on the cruise so we are going to have to get used to it anyway, just not sure how fast. Maybe I'll just book one breakfast and I'll make sure that it's not on the first day.

So let's assume I only want to do one sit down breakfast. I think I've already made up my mind that we are going to do LTT for dinner one night. That's character right? So I'm thinking Cape May for my one breakfast. It's at Beach Club, pretty convenient if we are staying there. Or do I really need to do Chef Mickey's. It's just that that means 2 character meals at the MK area. Or maybe I should do the one at Epcot for lunch? I'm soooo confused. None of the adults are breakfast eaters, only Clayton eats breakfast.

I don't think I'm going to do Crystal Palace. Clayton doesn't know the Pooh characters at all. I'll save it for a future trip.

I'm just so confused. All adults, no problem. Now throw a child and a vegetarian in the mix and I'm freaking out.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. The only 100% definite that we'll be eating at is BOMA because it has great vegetarian options.

I enjoyed AKL too but don't think it would be the best choice for your group. It seems so far from everything. And since you are going to eat at Boma you will be able to enjoy the resort then. The other choices would make it much easier to get over to Epcot or MK quickly. Just tell them there was nothing available!

Cape May breakfast sounds like a good choice for you if you end up at an Epcot resort. They still have the main characters so you'll be able to get that in. If you end up at WL then maybe consider Chef Mickeys. I love Chef Mickeys for breakfast.

BUMP!!

I've been daydreaming about all the shopping we're going to do and all of the hats we're going to try on. Sure you want to miss all that Faith?!:rolleyes1 You should PM us what airport you leave from so we can help you keep a look out for a good flight. I've proven to be pretty lucky you know!

Oh, shopping Monica. That hurts. I so want to do gift bags for the Jan trip and Mo is absolutely no help when it comes to shopping. He follows me around and shrugs his shoulders, very helpful. I know all of you could find tons of things for me to buy to go into gift bags.

The airport I have to fly out of is FAT. And I do not want to fly US Airways because I've heard nothing but terrible stories. So that leaves me with the choice of flying United and changing in LAX or Denver, American and changing in Dallas or Delta and changing in SLC.

Mo and I discussed all of this over lunch yesterday (after I finished that bathing suit shopping) and we both agreed that this is the very last time we are taking all of the kids on vacation at one time. We've done it 4 times before (3 to WDW and last year to Maui) but now with airfare and food going up, we just can't do it anymore. I regret so much that I've already committed to this trip with them.

I've been checking airfare every day but please, anyone else come up with a great deal that I might miss, please let me know. I'm not for sure not going in December, just can't commit until I know I've secured those Jan plane tickets without having to file bankruptcy.

I didn't know your dates, but Delta.com has some for $550. I know you were saying you were finding $800 so I guess that's a good deal. They all have layovers. Salt Lake City was one. I'm determined to get you to Disney w/ us in December!! I'm on a mission!!:rotfl:

I keep forgetting that we don't have anywhere to eat on Sunday. I'm off to read menus!

Something to think about:

If you girls want to save money and go to the MVMCP on Sunday night it would be OK with me. Premium tickets are $59.59 for Thurs and Fri. Advanced for Sunday are $48.95, and AP/DVC for Sunday are $48.94. Just a thought. We need to plan around the definite people and you all could do Sunday night I think. Pakey, IF you can come in December would you be able to do a Thursday night party? Meet us around 7:00? We're thinking it might be less crowded even though it's still premium pricing. Then we wouldn't have to leave the Friday park early.

Sunday eating possibilities:

-I didn't see anything I would eat at Kona for lunch. What about a late breakfast? Then we could explore the Poly and get a Lapu Lapu before we head out. (We all know that's the only reason Sara wanted to go there anyway!:rotfl2:)
-Olivia's at Key West
-Big River Grille at Boardwalk
-Captain's Grille at Yacht Club
**Sorry I'm so picky!:sad2:

Monica, I am now most likely leaving on Sunday too and I really want to attend a party. As far as the restaurants any of those would be great for me. I would really like to try the one at the Boardwalk as it's the only one of the three I have not been to.

I definitely want to visit the Boardwalk and if we have an ADR there that would make us go there! Wow Kimmy, you really get around!:lmao: Disney's restaurants that is! I know you want to go to a party so that's settled. No Sunday night. I wish you could get on my flight, but I alredy booked the window seat!

Monica, I thought Kona had a burger on their lunch menu? And a club sandwich and a chicken sandwich....:rolleyes1 Still doesn't appeal? :confused3

Lapu Lapu's for breakfast? Hmmm.. interesting! Drinking before it's technically PM?

It's fine, really. Big River Grille just doesn't appeal to me - sounds too much like a normal old place you would find around anywhere. Burgers and beer. It doesn't even take ADRs.

The $10 price difference for the party is not worth going without you Monica! You are just plain silly! Hmmmm...$10 savings on a ticket, but no Monica? Yeah, right! I think you are worth the $10! Now, $20...that's a different story! :lmao:

I say stick with Thursday or Friday for the party!

Sara

Um, I don't think the savings on the ticket is worth going to the party without you Monica - silly girl! ;) So, Thursday or Friday it is!

Ok, so now I just saw your post Kimmy and I feel bad that I suggested NOT going to the Big River Grille. If that's where everyone wants to, it's fine. It's just that it doesn't sound like that "Disney" experience thing I was thinking we might get at Kona. SOunds more like TGIF or Chilis (which I love, BTW) but at Disney I'd like to try and "do" Disney, you know?

Sara

Big River Grille is a basically a bar with food. If the weather is nice and we could sit outside looking out at the lagoon, that would be fantastic. But it is December and hard to tell now what to expect for the weather. Captain's Grille at the Yacht Club is a nice little place. I really like Olivia's but it's just so hard to get to/from if everyone also wants to see the Boardwalk on that day too.

Out of these 3, Olivia's has the best food though. It's not too long of a bus ride from DTD to OKW.

Just an FYI, not much going on at the Boardwalk during the day. It's a nice walk, looking at the lagoon, but the street performers and carnival games are not open during the day, at least not anytime I've been over there.

Pakey, that was my thoughts exactly about the Boardwalk was to eat outside. I love the Boardwalk even if there is nothing very exciting happening. Key West kinda gets me down, I don't know what it is about that place but I feel like I am a million miles away from Disney. Is there another restaurant at the Boardwalk that you can recommend?

Don't feel bad, Sara. I had no idea what it was.

We can split up, but there isn't "normal" chicken on the menu at Kona or a club sandwich. Yes there is a burger, but I don't want a burger at Kona for the same reason you don't want a burger at Big River Grille.:)

It wouldn't be bfast for Lapu Lapus. We would eat a late bfast, explore then grab a drink before we left. It would be lunchtime.

I was just tying to save everyone some $$. Thanks for the pricetag though!:rotfl:

Um, I don't think the savings on the ticket is worth going to the party without you Monica - silly girl! ;) So, Thursday or Friday it is!

Thanks! I'm so budget minded these days. I really hate it!

I don't care about the Bwalk performers. I just want to check it out. I've never been, and I doubt I'll get to stay there anytime soon.

I only suggested the burger at Kona because I thought that is what you liked about BRG. :confused3 I was trying to see some common items on both menus, and saw some similar looking "sandwich" type things. :goodvibes What's "normal" chicken, BTW? :confused3

I know goofball! :lmao: See, here is where putting in smilies doesn't always convey when you are joking! I just thought it was funny you mentioned the Lapu Lapu right after breakfast! (Note smilie here - )

I would love Kona for late bkfast, explore Poly, (Lapu Lapu), some shopping, boardwalk exploring, and lunch wherever. What about DTD? Or would that be too much moving around that day? Poly, Brdwalk, DTD. We could get some shopping in before leaving. :rolleyes1 Late lunch at Earl or Capt Jacks, or Raglan?

Sara

:) :) :) :) :) Ok, miscommunication over. Sara, I don't think you're getting how picky I am. I am very sorry for it, but I warned you all at the beginning! Normal chicken is nothing weird in it, or on it.

If we do MVVCP on Thursday we will be missing out on our DTD day. Maybe go Friday night instead? I don't mind hopping around on Sunday. Maybe Kona bfast, Earl late lunch? Maybe we all should post our ideal schedule and go from there!

I get the pickiness! I used to have a roommate in college who always just ordered everything "plain with ketchup". We would go to eat and she would order something that sounded fancy, but then say "I just want it plain with ketchup" It got to be very funny!

I'll have to go back and read your report about Boma! What did you eat there? I know you said you liked it, but the food seems too "un-normal"?

I think we should stay with MVMCP on Friday night. Keep DTD and Boma for Thurs night (I will most likely miss shopping, but make Boma - ya, I've got my priorities, huh?) Sunday - Kona for bkfast, Boardwalk for strolling, DTD for shopping and Earl for lunch. Then people can kind of get going whenever they need to. :confused3

Sara

Monica, I think us all posting our "ideal" trip would be perfect. That way we can see what everyone is thinking and hopefully come together that way. Sara has started that already, I'm getting ready to go home so I will post mine later.
