always be sure to shred those offers and any of those "convience checks" you get from CC companies.
Yes, you should always shred the CC offers.

As for convenience checks, if you call your CC you can request that they not send them to you. I stopped getting them a few years ago.

Here's how you can opt out of receiving pre-approved credit card offers:

Call 888-567-8688. Listen until you get the option to remove yourself permanently (the first option is to remove yourself for 5 years).

I'll do this...after the wedding. Once the final "bill" comes in with all the charges from the wedding, I'll be transfering to the first 0% interest deal that comes in the mail. Can't do that if they don't send the offers... :rolleyes1

for those credit card offers...can you just write return to sender on and stick in the mail?

Usually the offers are sent bulk mail. The only mail that actually gets returned to sender is First Class, Priority and I think 2nd class. All bulk, 3rd, 4th class type mail just gets thrown in the trash at the Post Office. (My terms aren't right, but you get the idea).

LOL! That's why I won't have them stopped... someday I might want to act on one of those offers!

Just noticed the amount of views on this post in just 14 days is 18,094 !!

There has got to be people reading and getting good advice, now thats great news!

I have the book. Haven't read it yet. It came in a bundle of Dave Ramsey books that I bought. Can't tell you if it'd a dud. One day I'll get around to reading it. Right now, I stick (like glue) to Financial Peace and The Total Money Makeover.

Hi guys,

I have started implementing Dave Ramsey's baby step #1 (set up an online savings account) and I am working to that $1000. Anyway, I have now been derailed!!!

Someone has used my checking account debit card to purchase $200 to an online catalog store and $130 to lease some equipment??? My bank says the debits are just "holds" at this point and they cannot even see who the merchant is for either of them. However they too $330 out of my available funds - so now I have 1 online payment that has bounced. They have closed my debit card down and are issuing me a new one - will not get it for 7-10 days. If I had not checked my account online today I would not even known this had happened. I did have to fax a letter of dispute to my bank for both of the charges and hopefully it will not take too long to get this fixed. My dad did loan me some money to put back into my account so nothing else would bounce.

I guess this is why I should have an emergency fund!!! :scratchin DUH!!! Well, I am going to try to get back on track AGAIN and hopefully get my emergency fund set up.

Has anyone had this problem with a debit card??? Any pointers for things I need to do or look out for - my bank was not real forthcoming with information or help!! Kind of like talking to a Disney Travel CM - I had to ask questions, nothing was offered!

You need to contact all of your financial institutions and alert them to the identity theft immediately!! Banks, credit cards, brokers, etc. Anyone who you do financial business with. You also need to file a police report. You also need to contact the 3 credit reporting bureaus and put a freeze on all of your accounts. They should set it up so that no one can apply for credit in your name without your authorization. Check the account activity for all of your accounts and credit cards to see if any other fraudulent charges have shown up. Good luck cleaning up the mess. Hopefully, nothing else was affected and you caught it early.

By the way, you didnt mention... had you lost your card or did the thief get the account info some other way?

This is why I refuse to have a debit card. If your credit card/number is stolen, you simply don't pay the charges. But if your debit card/number is stolen, that money is *gone* until you are reimbursed. Someone got my credit card number a couple of years ago and due to some miscommunication (that's a nice way of saying "idiots on parade!" ;) ) it was weeks before I had a new card. What if I had been missing cold hard cash for weeks? :earseek:

I'm sure at some point I'll have to get a debit card... eventually I won't be able to write checks. When that happens, I'll have a separate account and will only keep a small amount in there.

Thanks guys~

This is so frustrating!!! :worried: I DisneySteve I will implement the things you noted - my bank did not suggest any of that!!

BTW - I did not lose my card - I have it right here. I guess when I ate at a restaurant they must have took my number, etc. That is the only time my card is out of my sight. I told DH that if we are going to eat out we need to stop and get cash before we go or use a credit card. No more sending off my debit card for someone to use!!

Thanks again for the help and understanding!!! You just never think its going to happen to you! :charac2:

Boy, I agree, I agree, I agree! So many people are afraid of credit cards. Don't be! They are great- lifesavers!!! I have read so many stories of people that have gotten ripped off in various ways with a debit card. Get a credit card with a decent reward and pay it off every month- heck, pay it every day if you are worried about going into debt. They offer so much more protection than a debit card.

Couldn't agree more. I just don't get the folks who refuse to use credit cards. They are probably the safest form of payment there is while also being extremely convenient, widely accepted and, if you pick the right one, pay you back just for using them. What more could you want?

I know some people are afraid of overspending. I don't mean to be rude or offend anyone but I've always had trouble grasping this. When I walk into a store, I know what I can and can't afford. It doesn't matter if I'm paying with cash, check, CC, gold doubloons or shark's teeth. Either I can afford it or I can't. So if I've decided to buy something, why not use the form of payment that is most advantageous to me. We'll be spending 4 days at a Marriott at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco next month and the hotel is paid for with reward points earned by using our Marriott Visa (instead of paying $189/nite).

And sln88 made an excellent point. There is no rule saying you have to wait until your CC bill comes to make a payment. Nor is there any rule saying you can only pay the amount of your balance. You can send in a check every week or every payday. You can keep a positive balance on your account which basically makes the CC into a debit card as the money is already there to cover the bill. You won't earn any interest, but neither do lots of checking accounts so no loss there. Lots of people gradually build up a cushion by rounding up their payments each month. So if your next bill is $192, send in $200. Do that every month and before you know it, there's a fair amount of extra money in the account.

This is actually a small source of frustration to me. I'd like to be able to pay my new charges the day I make them. I want to go to Target, charge my stuff and get the points :teeth:, and go home and pay that amount online. It's a little too easy to forget how much I've spent if I wait a month, or even a week. But of my two credit cards, one only allows online payments once every 10 days :confused3 , and the other only allows me to pay 20% more than the current balance (and since that Target charge wouldn't have posted yet, it's not part of the current balance). Does anyone know if the Chase Disney Visa has restrictions on online payments?
