We are 8 days away from our 60 day mark(final payment due)

DH is now unable to attend - He just received a letter telling him of his citizenship interview and it is during the cruise -

He is a resident alien (green card) and has been for 15 years - But he really wants to become an American citizen -

He was told once he gets his interview date, not to cancel or try for another date because it could be a year from now -

We own our own business, so for DH to take a week off of work is a lot - but he loves the Disney Cruise!!

Now for the help -

Do DD and I still go? We have bought our airline tickets already (non-refundable) - Do I invite my Mom to go?

Do I just reschedule the whole cruise for another time (will I get charged to change the dates?)

Could I have fun just me and my DD? -

Any input would be greatly appreciated - The decision is ultimately up to us, but would appreciate any input is someone has been through this -

You have to go. Because of DH's work schedule, you must take advantage of the cruise while you can. While citizenship is important, he can always do that later. Cruise now-seize the day:D

If you decide to go with just you and your daughter I am sure you would have a great time....a whole week of mommy daughter time would be great!

You said it COULD be another year from now, not that it WILL be. I say you try for another date and see what they say. Perhaps if you can prove the reason for needing another date (travel already paid for and no ability to cancel without losing your money) they will see it as non-frivilous. If he has already waited 15 years to become a citizen, why the sudden rush now? Although granted, I have citizenship by birth so I cannot completely understand how he must be feeling but I would probably try to reschedule the appointment and go on the trip with my family and when I get back, not plan another single unrefundable thing until I have my citizenship.

Dear Kaitlin's Mom -
Congratulations to DH on his citizenship interview. That is a significant achievement. What a tough situation - I am wondering if it would work to postpone your cruise to include him at a later date.......maybe a post-citizenship celebration. Especially, as you mentioned, since he really enjoys the DCL cruise.

Often, airlines will charge you a fee to reschedule tickets but you don't always lose everything. And, if you haven't made a final payment, as I recall from past sailings, you didn't have to pay anything to cancel before the 60 day mark. That may have changed so check with whomever you booked your cruise.

And, you may find that if you sail with just you and DD, you will be paying two full fares anyway. IMHO, while you might still have a good time with just DD or DD and DM, from the way you speak of him, the cruise would be missing some of the magic without your DH.

Whatever you decide, I wish for you a wonderful cruise and much continued success for DH as a new citizen.

Reschedule the cruise or invite your Mom. As long as you are before the 60 day limit you can do it without a problem. Do not postpone your husband's citizenship interview. They are hard to come by and immigrantion at least in my area is very backed up and a new interview would definitely be another year's wait. Citizenship is too important to risk.
Whatever you do congrats on your husband's interview appointment.

Ginny, I think you read between the lines - I would miss my DH if he was not there - If it was a 3 or 4 day, I might do it - But since it is a seven day, I don't think I could do it - Well, I could, but it just wouldn't be the same.

Lisa F - DH is seeing about changing the date today - So hopefully by the end of the week, we will know. Yes, it has been 15years, but he has been talking for the last 8 years about doing this. Now that he if finally doing it, he doesn't want to put it off again.

aprilgail2 - Mommy Daughter time would be great - But I am a stay at home mom and she is not in school yet - So I am already getting that now - I really like the cruise with my husband because cell phones do not work and he is very relaxed on the cruise! He keeps in touch with his employess by email and we get a lot of alone time together -

Thank you all for your input, - I will keep you posted!

I just wanted to let you know that my husband decided along the lines of Lisa F - He has waited this long, so what would be a few more months -

I also told him that I would not do a 7 day without him - So either he would have to reschedule, or the trip would have to be postponed -

Thank you all for your input - sorry if this seemed to be a false alarm - but when you have been planning for about a year, and then this happens, panic sets in!

How about my thoughts (YMMV), but it will cost some $:

DH stays home but flies down to join up with the cruise after the interview.

Just an idea.
