First GiGI..."disney commando" is exactly what I am trying to avoid. Thank you for putting my feelings into words. Got a good chuckle on that

The Fort wilderness sounds good. But how do you get groceries in if you didn't rent a car? Renting the car kind of ruins the $$$$ for staying on-site. right?

LOL, it takes some time to get a grasp on the vastness and potential of things to do at disney... it also takes a few trips to realize that you likely cannot "do it all" and need to prioritize what matters to you and leave the rest for "next time" ('cause we all *know* there is going to be a NEXT TIME! )

at your kids' ages, you're likely going to want to focus on the stuff that appeals to them, while enjoying yourself as well, 'cause like you said, it's your vacation too! have you ordered the planning dvd yet? if not, i highly recommend it...

as far as resorts go... the values are not that "bright" or gaudy... they were a pleasure to wake up to (now, the stitch wake up call is a whole 'nother story! LOL!)... the mods, however, are a bit more subdued...

i priced out POR which holds 5 (2 dbl beds and a daybed) for 7 nights in value season, 8 day tickets w/hopping but no water parks, including the cost of the dining plan = $3150

the POLY Garden View Room for same as above = $4600

two rooms at pop century (1A, 2C in one and 1A, 1 C in the other) = $3306

All Star Family Suite = $3424

personally, i'd go w/POR... not only because it's less expensive but because it's a lovely resort, w/beautiful grounds, some recreational options (boat rentals, bike rentals, horse/carriage ride), great transportation (including boat to downtown disney), a brand new food court and a fab sit-down restaurant... it's also got my kids favorite pool!

you can get your groceries a number of ways... you can order them online and have them shipped to your resort... if you go over to the campground boards here on the DIS they will tell you all about it... plus, i believe there is a small store at the campground that has most of what you'll need... another option is to take a taxi... or rent a car for one day (we do this alot) and go to the store...

the cabin at FtW for 7 nights, 8 day hopper tix for all 5 of you, and the paid for dining plan = $3970 (although if you are going to do some cooking, you might be able to save by skipping the dining plan... w/out the dining plan all the above = $3192)

We can go for one week and here are the choices: : Nov19- 26 or Dec14-21 or March 3-11 or two weeks in june off site.
What about groceries at Ft. Wild?
Why would we want the dining plan if we want to try different foods?

you're not needy... you're new!

if you are on the dining plan you can try TONS of different foods in that you get a sit-down meal, a counter service (aka carry your own tray) meal and a snack per person per night... and almost every wdw restaurant accepts the dining plan, so you can try everything they have to offer from standard burger/fry meals, to character buffets, to ethnic foods (like german, chinese, japanese, morrocan, french, etc) throughout world showcase, to seafood while sitting "in" the aquarium, to the italian place where Lady & the Tramp shared their spaghetti and meatballs... the options are endless! LOL! and all for one set price so you know what you're spending on meals before you get there (and can even have it paid off!)
