Please help Sony Nex 3

Hi,

I'm hoping one of you can help me out. My 20 year old daughter wants the Sony Nex 3 camera for Christmas. What I didn't know is that there are multiple choices between the Nex-3 cameras. I am not well versed in cameras and lenses and if I ask her it will give it away that she is getting it.

Would someone mind looking at the comparison I did and tell me which one to buy? Heck, I don't even know what the heck a 18-55mm lens means and if it is any better or worse than a 16mm lens...no clue.

Or should I get this one (not sure what the difference is between the nex3 and nex5...I looked and looked.

The NEX C3 is the newest version of the NEX 3. I have the NEX 3 and like it a lot but if buying today I'd go with the newer NEX C3. For the starting kit I'd also go with the 18-55mm lens so essentially link #2 from your first post. Then the only other thing you need to decide is if you'll buy it in silver, black or pink!

You also asked about the NEX 5. The 5 series has additional features over the 3 series. The differences between the NEX 5 and the NEX 3 are minimal though. In addition to the features of the NEX 3 the NEX 5 can be used with an infrared remote, it has a slightly smaller magnesium body and a different video recording format. Since your daughter said she wanted the NEX 3 she might have already decided that has enough features for her preference. Personally I decided the additional features of the NEX 5 were not enough for the price difference over the NEX 3 and at this time I'd definitely buy the NEX C3 over the NEX 5 or else look at the newest 5 series - the NEX 5N.

Good advice given above - I too have the original NEX3, which I found to be just right in price and feature ratio compared to the NEX5 at the time...the sensor is the same as is the image quality, so it's mostly down to body design and minor features like a remote capability on the 5.

The NEXC3 as mentioned is just the updated and newer replacement for the NEX3 - it upgraded the sensor and controls a bit...and the NEX5N is the updated and newer replacement for the NEX5.

The 18-55mm kit lens is a bit larger, but much more versatile for general purpose shooting - the 16mm is a thin, small, and wider lens but has no 'zoom' - it's just a fixed lens. The 18-55mm is a 3x zoom lens and has stabilization built in, so a good overall lens for most folks. It's the one I'd recommend as well (and the one I have).
