Please help settle an important debate that DH and I have had for years....

Do plastic zip top bags make food taste plastic-y?

  • Yes! I have noticed this frequently.

  • No! I have never detected a plastic taste after eating food stored in zip top bags.

  • I think you're both crazy.

  • Other - because there always has to be an other.

I have never had a experience where the food tastes like plastic. I freeze vegetables over the summer in bags all the times and they always taste fine when I eat them in the winter. Same with christmas cookies I make. I have never notcied a weird taste when eating them after they have been in a bag.

It depends on how long you leave the food in there. If I pack lunch the night before or day of, the food is ok. If it is something like crackers or nuts & I wait a few days, I definitely taste the plastic.

Well, I gotta say - you guys are not helping my case at all!!! :lmao:

I have always noticed a plastic-y taste for most everything that gets packed into a plastic zip-top bag (it's worse with the store brand bags than it is with the Ziplocs, but I still notice it with Ziplocs). This happens with just about everything - chips, sandwiches, cookies, bread, etc... And even if it's only in there for a few hours (from when it's packed in the morning until lunchtime).

DH has always sworn that I am crazy and it's all in my head, but I know what I taste. Our compromise that we have reached is that he uses zip-top bags when necessary, and I will wrap whatever it is in press & seal. I don't notice the flavor issues with the press & seal. Especially with sandwiches and bread type stuff. We use the Glad containers for everything else.

This came up last night because we had baked some cookies and needed to store them. DH wanted to put them in a Ziploc, but I wouldn't let him because of the plastic-y taste issue. They wound up wrapped in press & seal. :teeth:

Do you have a heightened sense of smell? I do, therefore I smell & taste things that others do not. I can smell a difference in meat & milk, for example, before they turn. DH never smells a thing. I just have very heightened senses.:)

I was the 100th person to vote "no."
Plus, wouldn't it be bad if you could taste plastic?

You know, I think I might. Foodwise, I've noticed that with cake and milk especially. When cake is a few days old, I always notice it turning before anybody else does.

And I'm super paranoid about milk - when I was younger, I drank a big swig of milk that wasn't supposed to expire for another couple of days and it was already super gross. That's another one of my idiosyncrasies that DH laughs at - if the milk is even one day past the sell by date, I won't touch it.

Thanks for making me feel less crazy! :flower3:

Another thought - when I told DH I was surprised at how the poll results were shaping up earlier this morning, he had a pretty good point: If more people noticed the plastic taste the way I (and some others here) do, Ziploc would have gone out of business a looooong time ago.

I've never noticed a plastic taste. Maybe one of you just has more sensitive taste buds than most people!

I think I have a heightened sense of smell. I always smell the milk before I drink it if it is anywhere close to the expiration date. If I can smell it, I pour it out. I notice a difference in fresh meat too.

I do think if you put something warm in a plastic bag that it will heat up the plastic and could emit an odor. I have read that you shouldn't put most types of plastic in the microwave because it will heat up the plastic and emit chemicals into the food. So maybe putting anything warm in a plastic bag would not be a good thing.

I never put warm food in plastic bags anyway. I always use baggies for cold food. I have never noticed a plastic smell though.

it's a matter of chemistry, folks.

depending on what you put in the bag/at what temperature you put in the bag, the plastic is going to have some reaction to it.

This is why i get all :confused::sick: when people microwave things with plastic wrap on them - it's PLASTIC, it MELTS at high temperatures, and just because you can't *see* it, doesn't mean there aren't little itty-bitty particles in the air/on your food.

i voted "no", because i've never tasted anything different. But everyone's tastebuds are different, so it's totally possible that certain people are able to detect the plastic after certain chemical reactions have taken place.

My opinion is no.

But I voted that I think you're both crazy :lmao:! If you have been discussing this for years don't you think there might be a few more important subjects you might have missed ? ;)

Try eating a ziploc bag that has had food stored in it. If the bag tastes like the tuna sandwich you put in there, chances are pretty good the food absorbs the plastic taste.

What could possibly be more important than the plight of food in plastic bags? :confused3

;) :rotfl:

Also, just for the record, neither of us heat up food or put hot food in the Ziploc bags. :thumbsup2

Well call me crazy but on occasion, I have noticed that even if something like cookies are in a plastic ziplock, by the time it's break time at work, they often taste plasticy. This doesn't always happen though. :confused3 Maybe it depends on what kind of food you've put in them? I find if I use them for meats and place them in the freezer, I do not have this problem.

Yes, I an definitely taste a plastic taste on food stored in ziplocs. It varies based on food...for me, if the food is going to be reheated (in a non-plastic container) it is not bad, but if something like potato chips is stored in ziploc, I can taste it within a day, and it ruins the flavor for me.

Oh dear. It seems I must have malfunctioning taste buds, according to the poll.

Poor DW... at least "yes" is beating "other" - small victory! :lmao:

I love you in spite of your malfunctioning taste buds.:hug::lovestruc
