OK, I really need some help. I want to throw a really cool Luau party for my daughters 10th birthday. It will be February 25th. We are having it at the local gym that rents out their pool on the weekends for parties. Now here is your mission: should you choose to except it...

I need some really cool ideas I was thinking Lilo & Stitch, but then thought maybe she was too old for that??? (we are huge Disney fans, so L&S would fit into that)

I wasn't sure if I should have food there (not sure if parents would want their kids eating and swimming) or going out to Friendly's afterwards??

What about wording for invitations??? I saw some message in a bottle invitations on ebay, but she will have about 35 kids there and that would run me almost $50.00 just for the invites(which I may end up doing becuase they were really cool looking)

How about games???? I was going to get Luau beach balls from oriental trading for the kids to play with in the pool, but what about some other games, or do you think they will even want to play games?? The pool rental is 2 hours long, and the ages range from 8-11. There will be about 7 boys and the rest girls.

PLEASE HELP ME. I want this to be awesome for my DD. Any and all comments are welcome!!! THANKS!!!

How about a hibiscus theme. You could get some hibiscus beach mats or towels and lay those around the pool area. If you want to, you could give each child a towel and have that be their party favor.
Two hours will go really fast for the kids. I would just have one or two games if any. They are older, so I don't think games are necessary. But I would do food or snacks. Hot dogs, hamburgers, or pizza would be just fine. Have a tray of veggie sticks, chips, cookies, and a birthday cake.
If you want to add more into the party, a shave ice machine would be fun. Have some tropical flavors like pineapple, passion fruit, and mango. Little umbrellas and a straw.

For the invites, you could make them on old looking paper. Make it by printing the invitation, soaking it in tea, crumple it up and then open and let dry. then rip adn burn the edges. Or you can buy printer paper with the design of a scroll looking paper on it.

For another game, you could get this blow up octopus game from oriental, it's a ring toss game. I wouldn't do many games, let them play.

Id do tropical type foods, fruit, etc. maybe tuna sandwhiches, seafood dip, etc. Let them eat after swimming to avoid cramps.

Maybe get some lei's from oriental trading. they are very cheap. they have lots of decorating ideas as well. I love oriental trading!

My DD and I are planning a luau party right now for her 12th birthday.

We are making the bottle invitations. We are using parchment paper and burning the edges. Each week I buy a 6 pack of soda in glass bottles. I found a bag of corks that will work with the bottles. We will add sand to the bottom of the bottle and some shells.

Our food list includes Hawaiian pizza, macadamia nuts, fruit kabobs stuck in a pineapple, dried candied fruit like mangos and pineapple, goldfish crackers, malasadas and spam cubes.

Since we are having the party at home, we are setting up a Tiki Bar and I will be making fruity drinks like Virgin Pina Coladas and Lava Flows.

Games include a hula hoop contest and limbo.

I have an order placed with Oriental Trading for paper products, special cups and party favors.

Another invitation option would be beach balls. I read this in a magazine and my friend ended up using it at her DS's party. You buy a bunch of smaller sized beach balls, blow them up, and write the party info on it with a marker. Then you deflate them and mail them out. It turned out really cute.

The first one and second one come in blue and pink so I could get pink for the girls and blue for the boys. The third on is really cool looking but only comes in blue. Keep the ideas coming they are great!!!

What about Limbo for a game... also you can get some Lia's (sp) for pretty cheap at oriental trading too.

When we went to a luau, at the end we were served a hollwed out pineapple filled with sherbet-which everyone loved.
Maybe you could get a palm tree shaped cake or something similar.

We just did this in September for my DD's 10th bday. We ordered a lot of great stuff from Oriental Trading for favors. We also bought a videotape from them that taught dances-the kids loved it. They learned how to do the hula and the limbo from that tape. We also did a luau-type craft (from Oriental Trading), made virgin pina coladas, and had a bbq.

The only thing I really remember is that they did the limbo for an hour!

Hope that helps a little...

Amy

Is there someone you know that could give hula lessons?

A hula hoop contest is good too and a lot of fun.

I don't know anyone that could teach hula, although that would be a good idea. There isn't going to be a TV there either so that is not an option, but also a good idea. I did see that on the Oriental Trading website.

I do have an ice shaver, so I think I will bring that, and I have a smoothie maker, so I will bring that too to make virgin pina colada's and strawberry daquaries(sp??).

Keep the good ideas coming...and THANKS!!!

DD had a luau party when she turned 5- the kids had a blast! They had a Limbo contest and the girls each got a "grass" skirt- then they all hula danced. My DBro burned us a GREAT homemade Beach Party CD- lots of Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffet, Hawaiian Don Ho-type stuff, and Elvis Blue Hawaii stuff.

We set up a photo opportunity area- we covered an old ironing board with Hawaiian print fabric, and had a blue wave backdrop- the kids all "hung ten", then DD wrote her thank you notes on the backs of the photos and we sent them out as postcards.

We had lots of pineapple and other fruit, and did smoothies in "coconut" cups with lots of cocktail umbrellas. DD wanted a Barbie cake, so we got a Polenesian looking Barbie, and the bakery custom made a Hula Girl cake.

Bumping for some more ideas...also does anyone know where I can get a Hawaiian print bathing suit in a girls size 14??? TIA!!!

You could have everyone decorate sunglasses or flip flops, or they could make leis. You could make blue jello with sweedish fish in it. Put food in frisbees, beach pails, beach hats, and big tropical leaves. You could decorate with lanterns, fishing nets, sea shells and beach umbrellas. Some games are the tacky tourist game (a relay race that involves dressing up like a tourist) and musical beach towels.
